I'm intrigued, I've never done one of these before. It seems a lot of of the obvious slots are taken - I'm considering some sort of trade consortium/non-empire. Might that work?

Karin Handel
Owner of Handel Trading
Former Chief Magnate of the Isrianda League

+2 Domain (Item): Gold Scale
Many many years ago, creatures existed in the land. Real, huge creatures. Dragons, most especially. What did dragons crave? Gold. Gold, jewels, anything they could add to their hoard. They didn't do anything with it, just sat on it, making a bigger and bigger hoard, making it an increasingly appealing target for the brave, the bold, the greey, or the desperate. What a man could carry would set a family for life, and they said, if you were bold enough to get one, the scale off a dragon could bring a lifetime of fortune and success.

That's what Karin's mother always told her. The reason for their success, she'd said, passed to her from her father, from his mother, from her mother, and so on. Ten generations, mother said - then she always did love a good story. It seemed to Karin that their success seemed to be due more to hard work and keen intellect. Then again, Handel Trading had been a dominant merchant company in the realm for as long as anybody could remember, one of the founding members of the Isrianda League. Named for city of its establishment, the League served as its own quazi-government, resolving disputes among member, making sure people who did business were members. All to keep the realm tied together, the wheels of industry turning, trade flowing, and most importantly, the profits flowing.

Karin assumed the ownership of Handel Trading when her mother passed about ten years ago. Her best efforts couldn't keep the League from breaking up in the face of civil war. Everybody wanted to retreat to their corners, figure out how to weather the storm, and sack enough away to come out of winter on the other side.

That's not Karin's style. Fortune, as they say, favours the bold. Let the cowards hide. She'll wheel, deal, twist arms, and more. Maybe the scale will help.

-2 Foible: All about the Platinum Potentates
In a world filled with Queens, Scions, Divine Kings, Daimyos and more, a merchant doesn't get a lot of respect, not even when she's one of the richest people in the land and has her fingers in a huge percentage of the economy. No noble blood, no family name, no flag to go out and die for. Merchants aren't soldiers, and the soldiers they have...they cost money. And want food. And need ships. And...and...and...

Your Troop: Escorts
No, they don't really have a clever name. With the dissolution of the Israndia League, Karin's returned to her home city of Yesrel, an port city on a small island just off the East coast, and conveniently along most of the major trade routes in the East. The Escorts, the bulk of Karin's 'fighting force', are the security force for Handel Trading's important cargoes and vulnerable ships. Yesrel has its own city guard, but they're not going to range out of the city no matter how much Karin leans on her uncle Isrin, the affable mayor of the city. The Escorts are particularly adept at archery, spotting, tracking, and close-quarters combat - perfect for protecting a wagon train on the move, a cargo in a warehouse, or removing a particularly troublesome competitor. Not that they do that. Who told you that?

How were you betrayed?
The sheer stupidity of man. Hailing from an independent city, Karin never grasped, at a visceral level, the nationalistic impulses that took hold of her colleagues in the League. Men would oppose a deal because the good would go to the other side. Long time partnerships dissolved in the face of rising North-South tensions. Governments leaned on their merchant class, warning of fines or worse if they traded with 'the enemy'. The enemy!? All so much insanity, as far as Karin was concerned. This was business! In the end, the League was not a kingdom, Karin was not a Queen, and the League dissolved.

Which side were you with before the betrayal?: Neutral
As an old saying goes, know your enemies, but do business with them always.

Two things to do in this game
Get rich
Find a cause bigger than herself (but really, probably get rich!)

As for a portrait, I've had a bit of trouble finding a good one for Smallgods. Below is the original inspiration for Karin...which admittedly much more appropriate for a Big Gods game. Still gave me some of the basic ideas, and maybe Karin will move towards this as the scale starts doing its thing? Who knows!

Platonicsolid, good character. Just to clarify, what types of situations would you use your domain for?

I conceived it originally as specifically making her notably good at negotiating (within reason, clearly), but I think it would apply to any area of business and trade - bargaining, identifying a good opportunity, managing logistics, forging joint ventures, and so on.

Amerigo Hieronymous played by Ronwayne

Karin's Journal posted:

Some people assume I'd hate Amerigo and his naive little Consortium - I don't. It's great, actually. They have a health respect for a businesswoman, maintain stability and rule of law, make it easy to do business. You never really profit from chaos, in the long term. Now if I could just get them to let up on the whole 'corruption' angle....

Aiden Bierne played by Panic Attack

Karin's Journal posted:

I have trouble believing this is the man of fire. He seems so unassuming, so...pleasant, really. Any man that dichotomous requires cautious care. If he recognizes his own struggles, I think he'll make it. I'd like that.

Tadasu Hayshi played by ForeverBwfc

Karin's Journal posted:

A man of eloquence on the surface who's still a warlord underneath. A remarkably effective and relatively enlightened warlord, yet a warlord none the less. He understands the power of the purse and the need for stability. For that he can be a reasonable...ally.

Sun Shahar played by Puppies are dicks

Karin's Journal posted:

A man? A monkey? I don't know, and I'm not sure I care. This is what kings should be. Entertaining! We all know the Imperial beauracracy is doing most of the actual governing anyway. So why not?

Jurou Mori played by Thenabster

Karin's Journal posted:

A dark thing of dread, this Jurou is. Getting close makes my hair tingle and my skin crawl and my heart turn to stone in my chest. Evil? Darkness, certainly, and darkness I'd avoid.

Zaffi Manda played by Redhotkick

Karin's Journal posted:

One of the many gloomy men who stalks this land - not without good reason, the people of the Savi have a hard lot. On top of that, Zaffi got snared by some of the more malevolent powers of our world. I'm sympathetic...just not enough to put him on my social calendar.

Victaria Caspiel played by Rauri

Karin's Journal posted:

Oh, Taria. We might be good friends, if only you could get off your high horse! Yes, yes, honor honor kingdom house, can we just get drunk and make a deal already? You could take a few tips from the Mankey King! Don't get me wrong, I appreciate Victaria's confidence in me. It's meant a lot through all the rough going of late...she just doesn't get that if I put a crown on my head, it would detach my head from my body.

Bjorn Olofson played by Valhawk

Karin's Journal posted:

A leader forged in ice. He's built something strong, that I give him all credit for. Building it from the bodies of his enemies, that gives me pause.

Tangan Ongbak played by Rakovsky Maybe

Karin's Journal posted:

You know who's more fun than monkeys? Pirates! Buckaneers. Call them what you will (probably what they ask you to), they're usually fun, and with good business sense to boot. They tell some wild stories about Tangan, and even they're true...well, not even the touch of a Goddess can change a pirate's love of gold, rum and women.

Anselm played by Hikaizer

Karin's Journal posted:

Quest for vengeance. Betrayed by his company. This is why the whole continent is going to hell in a hand basket. What's the point of ruling the land when you've burned it all down?

Ehecamini played by Redeye Flight

Karin's Journal posted:

A half-man, half-eagle carrying the mantle of a god, who's leading the last natives of that far-Northern city of Topcala? That must be an exaggeration, or an old legend. Things like that don't happen any more...do they?

Etel played by Epicurius

Karin's Journal posted:

Again with the tribal revenge! It's like nobody's ever heard of civilization! The good news, is that the Hsang - Etel's band, at least - can be trusted, relatively, to do business with. Just not too much. We wouldn't want them getting big ideas.

Woo, interview, good! Hope it went well.

Also, glad to see the Mermaid Fleet get referenced. Karin might have found a new friend, once she gets word. :-)

Hey all. Been super busy - house problems and family illness stacked up, and this week is also going to be an intense work cavalcade. I should be on IRC at some point in the evening over the next few days. I know several of you need to catch up with me.
