and its seriously good like, really nice everything is nice and smooth and simple. i really liked that then entire process was put the original bios back onto it (i put a 'normal' bios on to install winders), make a recovery disk from any copy of chrome (including, aparently, other chromebooks), and reboot it. the machine took over from there and rebuilt itself, no click nexting, no partitioning, nothing. in about 5 minutes it was back to chromeos. punched in my credentials at the log in screen and im back in business. theres a bunch of turbonerd stuff it doesnt do, but it does most everything else i need, and theres soemthing to be said for the fact that it just works. and it even does full disk encryption and secure bootiery stuff too so theres no viruses (try and get me, hackers!) anyway its good and i like it

Jonny 290 posted:big fuckin servers you ssh into do. yeah its really more of a terminal but dang its a nice one like, to put windows on it, i had to blow away everything that was on the drive when it shipped. no recovery partition or anything. once i got the original bios back in place, it booted up, saw the disk had something other than a valid chomeos install on it, and was like 'dude just go on your bigputer and type these words into google' and i did and it walked me through making the recovery stick and then i put that in the chromebook and a soothing white screen with bold primary colors came up and reinstalled everything for me

Word of warning about crosh - there was no way to disable chrome key accelerators last I used it (like six+ months ago). Some terminal applications are impossible to re-use without changing your mappings because of it. IIRC GNU screen not being usable because of it was a big drawback.

mishaq posted:can chromebooks use usb-serial adapters? would be a nice dedicated thingy for device configs and poo poo Use them how? I'm going to go out on a limb and say minicom isn't a part of chromeos, and while you could certainly build it with the sdk you would be better off just installing an insecure buggy as gently caress linux distro.

At least with the c720 you can have a fully functional linux device for $200. Really easy to install once you enable the seabios. I have one where I removed the write protect screw. Its a dedicated $200 linux machine.

I had a phone interview with the google chrome team last year. I asked them about the support they get from vendors and the dude was all about it because nobody cares and they have to wrangle these idiot PC manufacturers and they're clearly the red headed stepchild compared to android. I felt bad for him but not really and I told the recruiter I'm not interested in a follow up.
