Introductions

The sun is high and the weather cool, a grand day for an adventure! A shame you currently find yourself seated in such a small, run-down place. This is Oakwood, more specifically the Tavern - or what passes for one around here. You spent several days traveling towards the southern borders of Lurkwood to lend aid to Saori Humblefist. An informally elected leader of this camp, Saori has spread word far and wide of need for hired help in tracking down lost laborers. Even as you sit here, the infrequent visiting of a local worker brings with them a sense of uncertainty and fear regarding their safety. Talks of abductions by unknown parties or wild animals growing bolder paint a picture of doubt in the minds of the everyday man and woman.

Such is what brings you here, and you find yourself not alone. Others taking their rest in this tavern are clearly here on same purpose, looking to lend their aid or test their mettle against whatever is behind the missing folk. Perhaps some you already know, or are strangers entirely. Whatever it may be, striking out alone would be folly - and it is unlikely any of these people will be walking home without first putting an end to the trouble.

[Another post incoming..]

[Vorag] <-*this should be a link to his sheet*
[HP: 12/12] [AC: 16]

*Post with your Icon first. Under that should be your name and link to character sheet/your OOC post with your character sheet in it. Under that should be your Hit Points and AC, along with any other info you'd like to keep track of - ammo, spells, etc. You can do this part some other way, so long as I can see your HP and AC somewhere on your posts.*

Normal text like this is for character/in-game action. I CAST MAGIC MISSLE!

Italic is for OOC talk.

If you need a dice rolling program, hit up Orokos and make an account. Or use whatever you like! So long as I can see a link of the roll.

Eventually I'll have little Icons of you and the things you are fighting. The :rolldice: emote signifies you can take your turn this round. I'll also be having some info associated near the icons, like AC/HPs.

Right now you're all socializing in this tavern and appraising each other. Your first post should be an evaluation of your party members - what you think about them on first glance/meeting, basically. Once that is done, you will all make your way over to Saori Humblefist for more details on the task she has for you. Have at it!

Little more/extra info about Oakwood

Oakwood is a small settlement with few buildings, but many areas filled with camps and equipment. Every hour spent here is done so by gatherers working the woods and its vast variety of resources, from lumber to game and all between. Few people live here, for it had been established by the unity of the many workers coming from the different settlements in the area as a means to gain protection. Lurkwood’s outskirts are safe, mostly, from the relentless hordes of barbarian tribesman, orcs, giants and other creatures that all vie for power deep in the heart of the Lurkwood forest. These workers bring their goods back to their homes - Mithril Hall, Silverymoon, Mirabar, Nesme and Longsaddle all benefit from the riches these hard-backed laborers liberate from the woods.

Malo sits on his stool happily chattering away about nothing in particular as he writes in the book in front of him being held up by a ghostly hand '-and well my family has lived here as long as I can remember, the Baker family Bakery as it were has been a staple in the small group of permanent residents." Glancing from the corner of his eyes he peers towards the other table giving them only a brief stare his quill flicks across the pages quickly as he continues to babble "My mother works here as a foreman of sorts, she used to work for an adventurers band way back in the day-" a tooth pops from Malo's mouth clattering to the table where he absentmindedly snatches it up depositing it in a bag at his waist "-excuse me, before she met my father. She was escorting some folk down to Silverymoon and the caravan she was traveling with stopped by to drop off some workers and supplies for the camp."

Malo's Book of Interesting People posted:

A fairly slow day today but it doesn't do to not record those that are even a bit interesting.

Human:Female- Good physical specimen seems to be a combatant of some kind with how rough around the edges she is, but I've written about humans enough to fill a book. I won't bore you too much.
Human: Male- Another good physical specimen, seems to have a group of fussy servants but they've not particularly caught my eye. Likely nobility of some sort by my guess.
HumanHalf-elf specimen- I was almost caught off guard by the lack of elven features on this one, but they're there if you look quite hard. Interesting that he hovered towards a person of like breeding rather than the human group at the other table when he could blend so well. Probably introduced himself but I wasn't paying attention.

Grabbing at a dinner roll sitting in front of him Malo tears off a chunk eat and sips delicately at the last glass from the good bottle of wine he'd brought back from school, clearing his throat awkwardly he drives his conversation with no one off in another direction "I was at Silverymoon for a while in school but things really didn't work out." The magehand holding his book up in the air lowers a bit as Malo dips his quill into his ink and his eyes bulge a bit at the sight of the pair at the bar and he immediately falls back into writing.

Malo's Book of Interesting People posted:

Ohoho I spoke too soon journal, look what we have here!
Dragonborn-Male: Not an unseen sight in the world for sure but the first I've seen as far out in the boonies as we are. I wouldn't doubt he's the first that Oakwood has seen in some time! I'll have to keep an eye on this one.
???-??? I honestly have no idea what this thing is but it's moving around and at a bar! This is quite likely the most interesting thing I've seen so far. Maybe they covered these in school and I missed a class. By my guess probably some kind of extra-planar critter. Another one to keep an eye on.

Waving his hand dismissively the mage hand lowers the book to Malo's lap and dissipates in a puff of ethereal smoke. His attention finally dragged from the book taking up his line of sight he gives a small smile and announces to the room "I'm Malo by the way. Pleasure to make your acquaintance"

Sephaerinus Kail
[HP: 11/11] [AC: 16]

Oakwood. Seems like a nice enough place, if not for all the abductions and whispers of beasts and monsters lurking about. No one had mentioned how many folks had disappeared, but if word had been spread as far as it did then it had to be a significant number. Kail hoped in the back of his mind that at least some of them could be found alive. Leaning back in his chair, facing out so that he could survey the tavern and its inhabitants, Kail collected his thoughts.

There were others that had answered the call--seemingly from different walks of life, it appeared that this Saori fellow had recruited anyone from anywhere that he could. There was what looked like a young human noble, complete with his own little entourage... but at least he didn't seem the dainty type. Another human, this one a lady, looked quite rough-and-tumble. Hopefully she focused that attention on the abductors, rather than indiscriminately. Kail didn't relish the idea of being on the receiving end of her fist. And the rambling half-elf... Malo, did he say? He's from Oakwood. It will be good to have someone who knows the local layout, and maybe he knows more about the abductions as well.

Then there were the wild cards: Kail had heard stories about men who looked like dragons, or maybe dragons who looked like men. Either way, the tall tales said that the creatures were ferocious monsters that could tear steel apart with their bare hands (or teeth!) and, perhaps even more ridiculously, even breathe fire like a real dragon! Pah! That would be a sight. And what's this other one? It looked like something a blacksmith and a watch-maker made out of spare parts, with a crude face scrawled on one side. Faintly, the half-elf remembered some story about a, erm... drone of some sort? Drum? A mad drum? It was supposed to be a walking, talking mechanical creature, at least. But the thing didn't look angry, so maybe he didn't remember the story after all. Regardless, definitely something to keep an eye on.

Not to be rude to this Malo fellow, Kail gave him a curt nod and smiled. "Well met, Malo. I am Sephaerinus Kail. As a local, do you know this Saori person?"

Malo nods and some of the tension drains from his face as the city boy finally joins the conversation, if there was anything he learned in the city it was that no one there knew how to have a simple conversation. Smiling widely Malo replies "Yep! She's a good friend of my Uncle Jake. He moved here to live with my Pa and help out some with the Bakery a few years back, the work crews always need food and well my family has lived here as long as I can remember, the Baker family Bakery as it were has been a staple in the small group of permanent residents."

Malo proceeds to loop back through his entire one-sided conversation not particularly bothered that he's already run through this entire story before for the city boy. Stopping just before he makes his introduction again he clears his throat and says "Anyhow Miss Humblefist is kind of the center of the community, she's been a good friend of the family and helped keep our family running when the labor shortage happened." Glancing to the side conspiratorially he faux whispers across the table "Now I'd say gossiping is rude, but really in a small camp like this it's almost a currency. I've only been back a few days or so but what'd you wanna know?"

Varella Emberlight
[HP: 10/10] [AC:16]

Life in a court of nobles then a well respected monastery had prepared Varella with many expectations about what was out in the wider world. What it couldn't have truly prepared her for was encountering it in person. As she sat in a humble tavern in the town of Oakwood she was surrounded by the noteworthy and the extraordinary. Across the room sat two fantastic sights. A dragonborn of a bronze heritage who carried himself like one who was used to being in the middle of a fight. The many scars that showed on his scaley skin told that plainly. He was busy speaking to anyone whom came near him. He certainly seemed to enjoy being the center of attention. And he would have been if he wasn't sitting next to someone, or some thing, even more amazing. The sages in the monastery had spoken of creatures that existed beyond the plane we all did. Creatures and beings that almost defied description. One of these beings that Varella found particularly fantastic was a Modron. She almost didn't believe such a thing that the sages were describing could exist and yet here she was mere not even ten feet away from one. Her instructors would die of envy if they knew. What in the world was it doing here?

The rest of the room was less exotic but far from uninteresting. They were not the transitory workers that made up the bulk of the population in Oakwood. Though there was a curious looking young man over at the other table speaking to a half-elf. He spoke with an accent that pegged him as being one of the rare locals who made their home permanently in the town. He was looking all about as he spoke and was busily jotting things down in a book supported by a magical construct. Did one of his teeth just fall out? Normally you have to give someone a good punch in the jaw before anything like that happens. It seemed to take the fun out of things to her. The half-elf seemed to be listening intently to the local. Was he gathering information?

At her own table another human had sat down across from her. He had the look of someone who was at home in the courts and halls of good living. He even had servants fussing about him. She took a discrete look at the signet ring on his hand. She recognized it as House Maernos from Waterdeep. What was a fancy looking boy doing all the way out here? Did he fancy himself an adventurer but couldn't be without the creature comforts? From what she had seen of Oakwood so far she would put money on him finding himself quite out of his element. She really hoped he didn't try to buy her a drink. If that happen there could be more teeth falling out of mouths. Perhaps it was time to see what the local boy knew about what was really going on here. She got up from the table and made her way over to where the half-elf and her were sitting.

"I don't suppose you two would mind a little more company?" She glanced over the half-elf, noting he was armed. "I get the feeling we're all here for the same reason."

Pulling his pack out from under his seat Malo pulls a cloth wrapped bundle out from the top and the scent of fresh bread begins to leak out before he has even begun unfolding the cloth "Now I was saving this to give to Miss Humblefist but honestly they don't tend to break out the fresh stuff until evening when the workers get back so by all means help yourself" Pulling a small serrated knife from his bag he begins meticulously slicing the bread into even cuts.

Alan Maernos
HP: 10/10; AC: 16

And here Alan had thought he'd be the one turning heads, with his fancy clothes and ever-loyal retainers. If anything, that he was far from the strangest sight in the tavern came as a relief. He idly thumbed his signet ring, which he wore mostly out of habit. Although, whenever some local noticed it and leveled a "milord" at him, he was sorely tempted to use it to emboss his family's crest into their skull. The other adventurers, at least he assumed they were fellow adventurers, at the bar all seemed to be of the agreeable sort. The sorcerer, he didn't appear to have the requisite education of a wizard, was a native of the small community, something he made abundantly clear with his endless, though surprisingly endearing, repetition of his life's story. Across from the sorcerer was what appeared to be a half-elf, definitely a fighting man of some sort. Across from Alan sat a grumpy-looking woman. She appeared quite fit, but carried no weapons or armor, leading Alan to conclude that she must be a monk. He noticed a signet ring hanging on a chain around her neck, but couldn't get a good look at the crest, not without shifting to a very conspicuous and easily-misconstrued angle. At the bar were the real curiosities. One he recognized as a dragonborn of bronze or brass ancestry, if the color of his scales was any indication. He appeared to also be a man of extensive martial training, based on his equipment. Alan didn't want to judge based on physique in the case of the dragonborn, lest he get caught up in stereotypes. The other person, if it could be called that, at the bar was quite unlike anything Alan had seen before. He immediately guessed it would have to be either extraplanar or some manner of construct, but he wasn't well-versed enough in the planes to know which.

As the sorcerer made his offer, Alan was pulled from his ruminations. "Ah, the breaking of bread, an excellent way to commemorate the meeting of new friends! Well met, fellows, I am Alan Maernos, most pleased to make your acquaintance." While he didn't hold himself to be superior to the common people, his courtly etiquette did betray his aristocratic upbringing. "I have come from Waterdeep, seeking to help those in need, and it sounds as though a most dire peril encroaches on this village. And so my blades are pledged to the defense of the innocent people of Oakwood. In any case, as you have supplied the bread, sirrah, I shall provide the ale. Barkeep, please bring us a round of drinks!" Alan called over to the bar, tossing a couple silver pieces over to the man tending it. He hoped that buying everyone drinks would help integrate him into the group, and keep them from taking too much notice of his social station. He didn't want them to stand on ceremony, and was feeling more than a little self-conscious about the whole thing.

Vorag
[HP: 12/12] [AC: 16]

Sitting at a large table in the tavern, Vorag welcomes any who want to speak. Curiousity is rampant here, and he is used to being the cause. He knows his appearance here, or anywhere, draws attention from every eye in the room. Scales, fangs and talons are a rare sight on the Sword Coast on any creature not trying to devour you. But Vorag was here for a very different reason...

Let them look, Vorag thinks. It gives him an excuse to appraise those around him eye-to-eye.

The room had its share of warriors. He could always pick their kind - his kind - out of a crowd. A human male clad in chainmail, a lengthy glaive nearby. Another man in scale armor with a retinue following him around. A female of their species, muscles taunt and eyes alert.

Then there were a few scholary types. An elven lass reading from a book...wait, no, that was probably a man despite the lack of muscles. Mammals...hopefully that one is a powerful mage, or he won't last long.

The only thing here that made no sense at all was that. The machine-man. Vorag had never seen its type in all his travels, nor fought anything similar in his time in the arena. His curiosity could not be sated by staring. Vorag nodded to those sitting with him, paused his tale of a battle and finished his mug in one long chug. Then he strode to the machine.

"I am used to being the rarest thing in any given tavern. But I believe you have me beaten tonight. It seems you are stealing the spotlight, Sir...?"

Malo quirks his eyebrow up as Alan walks up and fills the air with his flowery speech, he unsubtly stares at the man's ring a moment but whether or not he seems to know what it means is not at all apparent Making no objection to Alan's approach Malo smiles when the man offers to buy the drinks raising his wineglass from the table and toasting the air "To new acquaintances!" before knocking back the small bit of jade colored wine left in his glass.

Smiling in bliss as his drink settles Malo addresses Alan briefly his accent seeming subdued behind the self consciousness of speaking to someone so proper "Miss Humblefist and the work crew shouldn't be too much longer in coming back. Normally they would run multiple shifts in a day, but you're here so I suppose and you know why they're not taking the risk." As he looks out the window a touch solemnly he allows the dour look on his face to persist only a moment as he turns back to the assembled group before the perpetual grin replaces it and he thumps the table once with a hearty "We have time enough for a drink or two in any case! Then we can head across the street to talk of serious things."

Whoops! :v: I got a little ahead of the ball, no more posts for me until the dm update haha.

Varella Emberlight
[HP: 10/10] [AC:16]

Varella had to crack her own smile at the comment by the young sorcerer. After all she and the rest of the adventurers in the tavern were on his home turf. They were the outsiders here. She took the offered seat and introductions were made. The young man was named Malo Baker and he was quite happy to tell Varella his life story. He even proved true to his namesake and produced fresh bread from his own pack which he offered to share. It smelled much more inviting to the field rations and caravan food she'd been living on since leaving the monastery. It made for a welcome treat.

The armed man was Sephaerinus Kail. On closer inspection Varella could tell this man had seen his fair share of fights. There were the telltale scars and the way he watched to room. He was appraising her at the same time. This man has seen some dark times, Varella thought to herself. There was that look about his eyes. He seemed content to let Malo monopolize the conversation. Malo went on to say them both that he knew the woman who had sent out the call for help that had reached the monastery. She would be returning soon with her work crew and that we would be able to speak with her then.

The nobleman left his table and began introducing himself to the rest of them. He was prim and proper with his speech screaming that he had lived a life within the elites of Waterdeep. Varella noticed how Malo reacted to being in the company of someone so far removed from the life he himself had led. He made a grand gesture of his introduction and named himself as Alan Maernos, she'd identified the design of the signet ring correctly. He said that he had come to offer his blades to the defense of Oakwood. Was he some spoiled boy off to live his idea of a fairy tale or was he sincere? Time would tell. After introducing himself he then bought a round of drinks for everyone. When Malo thanked him for the drink Varella heard the young local trying to hold back his accent. She'd seen many people do the same back in the days where she was still welcome in Emberlight Hall. She always found that uncomfortable. Malo had nothing to hide. This was his home after all. A fresh glass of wine seemed to lift his spirits back up though.

While this was going on she noticed that the dragonborn had decided to strike up a conversation with the modron. Maybe he realized that it was a unique situation where he wasn't the most unusual being in the room and decided to see how the other half lived. Not that she could blame him. The modron really did defy description. She wondered what it was going to say back to the dragonborn warrior.

Bestiary
[HP: 11/11] [AC: 15] [Lvl1: 2/2]

Oakwood. Wood of an oak. Well the place was named. Perhaps well named. Oaks didn't particularly matter to Bestiary. Not unless they got up and started moving. Then he would have to designate a whole section of the Bestiary Eternal for them. He makes his way to the meeting place, stopping outside for a moment as he measures the dimensions of the doorway, calculating the movement of the door, and estimating the amount of force needed to open optimally. He then proceeds to enter, precisely, methodically. Upon entering the room he scans the patrons, and anyone else within. He goes about analyzing the their behavior, calculating strengths and weaknesses, and trying to figure out what individuals might be partaking on the same adventure. A few individuals catch his eye for one reason or another.

He walks up to the various patrons, particularly the ones that catch his eye, and begins to poke and prod them, lifting their arms and legs, checking their fat content, muscle tone, flexibility, and such. As he does so he keeps up a running commentary.

"Designation human male, thin, has trouble standing on one leg. Weak. Designation elven female, eyes are not the same color. Designation dwarf male, has an extra growth upon his buttocks."

He steps up to a well built human in scale and fine clothes. He pokes him, prods him, has him lift first one leg then the other, all while rambling. "Desgination, male, human. Fit, well fed." He inspects Alan's hands and fingers. "Not used to manual labor. But some experience with weapons. Likely fit for combat. Armored." He turns, well the upper portion of his cube turns while the lower half remains pointing toward Alan. "Addendum. Male Human Subject 1 is designated Alan Maernos. Addendum. Subject Alan Maernos is followed by three individuals. Designation Elf, Male, older. Designation Dwarf ..." And then his lower half turns toward the dwarf and he swiftly moves to her. After some careful prodding and inspection he continues. "..Female. And Designation Halfling Male. Names to be added later." He returns to his inspection of Alan. Noting the playing with the ring. "Subject Alan Maernos adorned with a ring, closer inspection reveals a crest. Hypothesis noble, or acting as one."

He then moves on to Varella. Following suit with the inspection, again checking muscles, flexibility, reactions, and the like. Again he inspects hands, and he spots her ring as well. But he lacks the tact of Alan, and actually lifts it up between two fingers. "Designation, Female, Human. Fit. Careful examination indicates hands and other extremities have signs of manual labor and a hardening discipline. Hypothesis can use hand and feet in combat to great effect. Not armored, but careful examination suggests she will be able to avoid blows Subject Alan Maernos will walk into. Designation updated, for now, to Female, Human, Unarmed Specialist. Another ring, not worn on a finger, appears to be in the keeping of Designation Female, Human, Unarmed Specialist, closer inspection reveals another crest. Hypothesis, same as Alan, though acting as a noble seems less likely with the way the ring is hidden rather than worn."

Then he walks off toward what appears to be another human. Again in mail. More poking and prodding. "Designation, Male, Human, 2. Error. Correction Designation, Male, Half-Elf. Armored similarly to Subject Alan. Subject seems strong of limb. Fair of face. Hypothesis, subject would likely be attractive to human females. Subject is armed and armored, and seems at least somewhat capable of combat, like subject Alan."

Then he turns to Malo. He begins to poke and prod at Malo. "Designation Elf...Male. Lack of muscles or obvious signs of combat. Talkative. Self professed local. May be a source of information. Danger! Danger! Chaos Chaos!" With that he begins running around like a chicken with its head cut off. The little wings atop its head flapping frantically, its legs and lower torso moving one way while its upper body spins in the other direction, flailing its arms about. After a few moments of this it stops. "Designation updated to Malo. Addendum dangerous, chaos user. Caution required."

It quickly moves away from Malo and goes to inspect the dragonborn that had been near it in the beginning. Responding to the question. "I am self designated Bestiary. It is my mission to catalog all manner of creatures upon this plane. For some it is a simple matter of diagnosis. For the many monsters that have accrued in the area it requires more vigorous diagnosis."

As he responds he begins to measure the dragonborn. "Designation, dragonborn, brass, male. Strong and tough. Combat capable. Should be capable of breathing fire periodically. Likely to be sent on the mission." The dragonborn was easier for Bestiary to figure out, being clearly of warrior make, and not being yet another one of the all too common humans, or human half breeds that overrun the plane.

After inspecting everyone he turns around the room, or at the least the upper half of his body does, and he introduces himself to the others. "This one is designation Bestiary. I am pleased to join you today in this vital mission that will certainly involve deadly monsters that could tear a man in part."

Sephaerinus Kail
[HP: 11/11] [AC: 16]

Playing catch-up!

"By all means, madam, sit," Kail looked up at Varella and gave a small smile. He shifted his seat to the side, ostensibly to make room for Varella, but more to get a better angle to watch the man-dragon and the angry-drum-thing.

Eyeing Malo and the bread, Kail couldn't help but wonder about Malo's teeth. Kail's ears twitched a bit at the thought of the sorcerer taking a bite and potentially pulling more teeth. It was a rather unappetizing image but Kail still accepted a piece, more as a sign of courtesy than anything. He offered a quiet "thank you, Malo" with it as the room started to become much more vocal.

The noble came over next, delivering a very flowery introduction befitting a high-born gentleman and naming himself Alan Maernos. He seemed nice enough, and even offered to buy some drinks. Not off to a bad start. Kail graciously accepted the introduction and the drink, giving Alan a deep respectful nod.

Then the angry-drum-thing became active and made a show of grabbing everyone, touching their things (thankfully not like that) and talking to itself. Kail put his head in his hand. Oh, what a day this will be...

Porpoise, how is Malo pronounced? Is it MAY-low or MAL-low or something else altogether? I must know for MY VERISIMILITUDE :reject:

Alan was not so oblivious as not to notice Malo's attempt to suppress his accent, and tried to make the local feel more at ease without singling him out. "I should probably address the obvious, as you've all doubtlessly seen my ring. I may be the heir to House Maernos, but I neither expect nor want to be treated any differently than any other wandering swordsman. If I cared about airs and graces, I'd be back home studying the intricacies of the Waterdhavian financial system. In all honesty, I can hardly stand being around 'proper' nobles, anyway. They share the collective delusion that their leavings bear no odor, and that just because they had the good luck to be born wealthy, they're somehow inherently superior to those that did not. A damnable crock of shite, as my maid would put it. If anything, they should share their wealth more freely, it's not like they need all of it. But, I digress." Alan coughs uncomfortably, keenly aware that he'd gotten on a bit of a populist rant. Again. As the legged cube began examining everyone, Alan permitted it to proceed, out of respect for whatever strange foreign custom it was practicing, but found himself slightly irked at the "well-fed" comment.

I keep trying to stop but y'all keep draggin' me back in! Dick Burglar we'll go with May-Low.

Malo smiles widely as Kail takes the offered bread, his full bright smile lacking no teeth, a welcome sight to behold for sure though the bag at his side rattles unnervingly as he gesticulates. He turns his head briefly as Alan speaks and mentions his house but by the blank look on Malo's face it is clear he has no idea what the man is talking about, his lips thin disapprovingly as the man says shite, these city folk, no manners whatsoever. Malo however does seem mollified somewhat and resumes speaking in his normal tongue "Well I'm sure it'll be nice to know ya, if you're here to help out y'all can't be too bad"

Picking up the empty bottle on the table Malo shakes it gently sets it down disappointed as his personal bottle from the Octavian vineyard has run dry he wistfully says "Best ten gold I ever spent" and slips the empty bottle into his pack as the barkeep arrives with more drink.

The drink begins to take its toll on a slightly drunk Malo as he slumps forwards slightly in his seat resting his elbows on the table and cradling his chin with his palms as he takes in the minor conversations going on. His own ring slips off of his pinky finger bouncing to the table, the sigil once hidden as it faced palm down, it rolls to a stop in the center of the table the sigil on it depicting the symbol of Talos bound inside the symbol of Mystra, Malo's own private little joke about his chaotic powers which are quickly outed as Bestiary rolls up and begins poking at him before rolling off shouting about Chaos and eventually introducing itself.

Part 1: Oakwood

The almost accidental wandering eyes of Alan, the machinations of the active Bestiary, the fresh scent of deliciously baked bread.. Of these things and more are the catalysts which broke the ice, and the end result is undeniable - the group, all seeking to answer Saori's call for help and find the missing workers, has been formed!

:toot:

Having warmed up and joined forces together, you emerge from the Tavern to be greeted by a dwindling population. What should be numerous workers going about their business is now significantly less. It becomes clear the concerns of abductions are halting progress, leaving many to remain in their tents empty handed. Those who dare are either brave, or desperate.

Across the way from the tavern is a larger, properly sized building. Simple double doors lead you inside.

Cobbled together cots and beds line the front portion of this large room, where injured people are treated to by a small staff. A makeshift infirmary it seems. Further in the back, a series of desks where workers throwing papers around are arguing among each other. Production is slow, if not outright halted, due to the recent issues. Somewhere further in the back of this mess, you find a lone woman head first in paperwork. Only when you make your way over does she notice your groups presence.

: "Please tell me you're here for the missing wor-.. Malo? Is that you? It's been so long, kiddo! Has it been over a year already? When did you get back?! There's so much I want to talk to you about! Wait.. Did your uncle send you? Oh dear.."

You see now her unusual clothing - a dark yellow robe with plenty of adornments. Varella may recognize the outfit as that of a Sun Soul. Malo and Saori have some catching up to do, but it is not too long before she regains her composure. That composure is almost threatened again when she gets a good look at the group and the variety of members in it - including a moving box? Must be a pet, she imagines.

: "Ahem.. Sorry. Yes, the missing people. It's been going on for a while, actually. We had our own out looking but they come back empty or with injuries from the wild life. It's hell in that forest, the conflict deep inside has always riled up the animals, the hunters especially been careful in their activities."

"We recently lost 4 loggers from Nesme. They were last seen only a mile or so inside Lurkwood, but they never returned after that. A group of hunters returned earlier today claiming to have seen something much further inside, somewhere around here.." She points to a map of Lurkwood, a circled spot being roughly 10 miles into the forest.. ".. But I was pulled away before I could learn more." From her side, she unlatches a pouch of coins and places it on the table. "It took some wringing out of the ring leaders around here, but we pooled a few of these together. Given your group number, should be 100 for the each of you. I can't hold on to hope any longer, I don't expect you to find anyone alive.. Just, put an end to whatever is doing this and return. Especially you, Malo. I couldn't live with myself if you fell victim."

Grabbing his ring off the table as he hears the telltale whistle going off announcing the work crew's return Malo waves his hand and heads across the street excitedly exclaiming. "Come on now you don't wanna be late for the meetin' "

Bursting through the door to Saori's office assembled party in tow Malo doesn't slow his stride even as Saori is recognizing him. Throwing his arms around her in a familiar hug he says jubilantly "It's been too long, I only been back a couple days, and I'm right sorry I ain't stopped by but I reckon Pa always needs help in the shop and I figured I oughta give him a hand there first" whispering into her ear "This here bunch seem mighty decent so far I think we're in good hands."

Pulling back he flips his pack around in front of him and pulls out the matching bottle of Octavian Jade that he'd been drinking at the tavern he turns the label towards her with a grin "Just a little something I rustled up in the city before I left, I know y'all been having a rough time out here" Setting the bottle on the desk he smiles brightly and says "But dang if it ain't mighty good to see you Auntie Saori!" before stepping back to join the rank and file of the assembled party he speaks up nodding "Whatever you need me to do ma'am I'm there for you."

Farewell 10gp bottle of wine~ I'll miss yooooou.

Varella's memories: Approximately seventeen years ago posted:

"And which of you can tell me the proper greeting to offer a Lady of equal standing?" the instructor asked his pupils. Varella raised her hand and he motioned for her to speak.

"What are those small hairy men doing in the courtyard?" she said as she pointed to several dwarves unloading a wagon full of barrels.

The instructor sighed. Why wasn't this child like her siblings he wondered. The rest of them sat dutifully on their benches in the courtyard of Emberlight Hold. "They are not men, young lady. They are dwarves. And they are unloading barrels of the ale we bought from them and taking them to the cellar."

Varella thought for a moment. "Ale is what the grown ups drink when they have a party. Are we having a party?"

The instructor nodded. "Yes your father is having important guests soon and he wishes for them to be provided for so there will be a banquet in their honor."

"Parties are fun! Are the dwarves coming to the party?" she pointed again to the dwarves. "Are they invited?"

The instructor turned to look at the dwarves unloading the barrels and scoffed. "Absolutely not."

"Why not?"

The instructor's face tightened visibly, what an impudent child this was. "Because those dwarves are mere commoners and unfit to mix with the betters."

"But if their ale is good enough to drink why are they not good enough to invite?"

"Young lady you are testing my patience. Your father is an important man. His station and by virtue of it yours as well is above such rabble. They should be happy that we buy their ale and pay them a fair price for it. They are beneath us."

Varella's little face screwed up into a frown and she put her hands on her hips. "That is stupid! And you're stupid too! I'm going to invite the nice dwarves to the party and you can't stop me!" And with that Varella shot up from her bench and started running towards the dwarves. The instructor tried to restrain her but Varella ducked under his arms and he fell over. The other children gasped and giggled as he landed on the ground and cursed out loud. The guard standing nearby also started chuckling. The instructor shot him a venomous look.

"You! Go collect her before I report you to the Lord himself for your disrespect!"

The guard composed himself quickly and started after Varella. But not so quick as to overtake the young girl. By the time he did reach her she was hopping around the dwarven foreman shouting "Master Dwarf! Master Dwarf!" The foreman was smiling and the rest of his crew were laughing and clapping for the boisterous little human child.

That memory had come back to Varella as she watched the Modron come to life in the tavern. It went from customer to customer in no readily apparent order, touching and evaluating them. It then walked over to the table she and the rest of the adventurers were sitting at. First it examined the young swordsman from Waterdeep. It took all the discipline she could muster when it evaluated Alan Maernos. "Well fed, not used to manual labor," it had said. The Modron examined his attendants as well. It seemed to have some trouble identifying the dwarven lady. "It must be the beard," she thought to herself. Then it turned its attentions on her. Normally the routine the Modron was going through would have provoked a swift and violent reaction from her. But she understood that this creature was far removed from it's normal realm which called for understanding and patience. But then it reached out with one of it's metal arms and lifted up her signet ring to examine. She reached up and gently but firmly moved the Modron's hand away from her chest.

"Listen, friend. I know you aren't familiar with what is allowed to be done to a lady in these lands so I will forgive you. Just remember from now on that if you go poking around a woman's cleavage to grab at their jewelry that it will quickly become a problem that you should have avoided provoking. I hope you understand." She took the chain out of the Modron's "hand" and settled it and it's ring back into place. In reply the Modron summarized it's findings. She had to admit that it wasn't far off for such a quick examination. She also told it that it could designate her Varella instead of 'Female, Human, Unarmed Specialist.' After all it seemed like such a dry way to refer to her, even if she agreed with it accessing her as a specialist. Even monks had professional pride.

-Meeting Saori-

Soon after the Modron finished it's examinations and declared that it was here to join the mission to fight the monsters terrorizing the region. It had also acted quite alarmed by Malo and identified him as a chaos user. Varella was taken aback. He was barely a boy and yet he had sent the creature into a near panic. Varella did a mental check of the kinds of magic users she had learned about in the monastery to understand why this could be. She soon remembered that those called sorcerers dabbled in the wild magics. She would have to keep a much closer eye on Malo if they were going to be spending time together on this mission. As if emphasizing the danger a ring bounced off the boy's finger that had the symbol of Talos within the symbol for Mystra! What wonders and mysteries had she ventured into this day?

When the Modron calmed itself a loud whistle sounded. Malo told the party that it was the signal that sounded the end of shift and that we would go to meet Saori Humblefist now. A short walk from the tavern brought them to the larger permanent building in the area. Malo ushered them all inside and back towards a woman who was focused on the papers before you. When she looked up she began to say something but then set her eyes on Malo and her mood brightened. Throwing his arms around her Malo in a great hug. He called her 'Auntie Saori' and presented her a bottle of the wine like the one he had been drinking earlier. He was beaming and seemed quite proud to be giving her the wine as a gift.

Varella then noticed that Saori was wearing the robes of a Sun Soul disciple. Saori Humblefist was a fellow monk! Varella found herself quite pleased to see another of her kind in Oakwood. She hadn't been in the company of other monks since she left the monastery some weeks ago. With her hands together fist to fist and in front of her Varella bowed and acknowledged her as Sister Saori. She listened intently as Saori explained the situation in Oakwood.

I'm going to leave it at that for now since Saori is going to want to catch up with Malo. But I'm all for the two monks interacting with each other.

Saori is delighted by Malo's gift, while a mix of curiosity and admiration is Saori's response to the Dragonborn.

: "Oh my.." She bites her tongue, lest the innocently rude question of his fangs chambered in her brain finds its way out. ".. Oh, but I do wish you safety on the trip mister dragon. If you've the mind, speaking with the hunters before you venture into the forest may help prepare you for whatever it is you find. I believe they were from, uh.. Mirabar, if I recall correctly. They ought to be near the forest treeline."

Saori blushes at Varella's introduction, giving likewise a similar bow in greeting.

: "It has been an age since I've had the greetings of a sister! Ever since my master taught me the ways of the Sun Soul and left all those years ago, I've become just another worker around these parts. Simple ol' Saori!" Her cheery demeanor changes when one of the bickering laberors jokingly interjects, ".. More like Saori the Slave Driver!" The following laughter is quickly shot down by Saori's frustrated stare at the offenders, who are quick to move their "debates" further away.

"Don't mind these roughians. Can't beat a lick of sense into any of 'em.." In a much louder voice ".. Knocked around by too many fallen trees!" She holds Varella's hands "I would so love to talk more with you and Malo, but even with most of the workers staying in their tents, there is always much work to attend to. I cannot stress it enough - please be careful, and return to us. Maybe then we can share stories!"

The coin is put away, no doubt ready for you on your successful return. With that the group readies its departure, making its way to the well-used entrance point of Lurkwood.

Working on the next part, which will be sending you into the forest. For you experienced types, you discern the point on the map will be a roughly 3 hours trip. If you need any last minute supplies, the tavern keeper has a basic assortment of items.

"Sister Saori you can be assured that I would also love to talk you some more," Varella said as she squeezed Saori's hand. "But you are right there is much to do and too little time to do it." Varella leaned in closer to Saori and lowered her voice. "And I will do my best to look after your nephew. I will not let another family," she paused a moment, lost in thought, then continued "be torn apart by misfortune." She stepped back and in a normal tone asks if there is a copy of the map Saori was showing the party that they could have. Information about the lay of the land was always helpful. She bows again to Saori before they leave the building.

"I'm for speaking with the local hunters before we head into the deep forest. We need to know what we're coming up against."

Like I say above I vote to speak with the hunters and then head out to bash some monster in the head. Varella has all the supplies she'll need to rough it in the woods and is ready to head out barring any story elements that pop up that need her attention.

"A-actually, my retainers did advise me that I should procure a climbing kit later, so I suppose I should accept, but only half, not a copper more." The dwarf appears satisfied with this compromise, and steps back from the group once more.

Alan chuckles as the dragonborn makes his morbid proclamation. "I'm certain my father would find that sentiment very comforting, but I've no intention of dying just yet. Saori gives Varella the map she marked. It is not well detailed, but the direction is straight forward enough to maintain an easy course. She is still unsure of what to make of the strange creature calling itself Bestiary, but gives it a quick smile after its introduction. Alan's gesture and response only adds to Saori's confidence. "Such a well mannered gentleman, so rare to see these days. A better group of monster hunters I could never ask for!"

Lurkwood Forest: Entrance

Sounded like a visit to the hunters was approved, so we'll set it up as such..

Your group easily draws attention from the few workers still going about their duties, quickly assuming such individuals could only be here for one reason. Some speak discouraging words under low breath to one another, convinced this will be the last time you'll be seen around here. Others are more optimistic, waving their arms and giving encouraging shouts.

Before long your feet bring you to the main opening of Lurkwood forest - a well used trail that twists and winds its way into the forest. As claimed, a small band of four human hunters are seated at a camp nearby, tending to their weapons and gears. One of them notices the party, slapping his hand against another's arm, who in turn takes notice. He moves to his feet and makes his way to you.

: "Such a unique group of.. People, can only be here for one thing. You seek to find the missing workers. It is a fine thing you're doing, for those of us who make our livelihood here. Allow me to give you what we know."

"Firstly, the forest itself is dangerous in many ways. No doubt you know of the vicious fighting that resides deep in the forest. Such has been going on long before this settlement was even constructed. Most likely, where you need to go is not deep enough for you to come across the conflict. However, wild life has been driven near mad from it all - such creatures that normally leave man alone can and will attack, should they be hungry enough. Always be on alert for both, and if you hear of a faction before they come upon you, run. Fast."

"Secondly, we believe what you hunt may be Goblins. One of ours spied a small green figure darting about the forest a few miles in during a hunt. We later tracked it some ways northward until the trail abruptly stopped. That is the area you seek. Be as cautious as possible once there, I fear it may be their lair."

Should there be no more, he will give a polite bow, "Silvanus watch over you." You can talk with him some more should you have questions or comments, or make your first steps into Lurkwood proper.

Approaching the group at the edge of town they make their way out to the forward camp the hunters have stationed themselves he waves giving the assembled a chipper "Howdy!" before sauntering over and depositing the basket of fruit tarts on top of a crate and folding the kerchief covering the basket back for the hunters to get at smiling he simply steps back in line saying "Y'all bring that basket back to my Pa next time you're in town now m'kay?"

As the group makes for the forest Malo stands at the back of the group and gestures with his hands whispering "Magis Attrecto" summoning an ethereal ghost hand that reaches into his satchel and lifts out the book he'd been writing in. The book now floating in front of him, Malo not so subtly stares at The Bestiary as they march through the forest taking sketches and making notes on the creature's physique. Qiric and Bronlin gave a small amount of protest, but Pergin was more than happy to stay behind and enjoy some ale by the tavern's hearth rather than traipse through the woods to fight monsters.

In the forest, Alan grinned when he heard what their foes would likely be. "Ah, goblins. Sometimes clever, rarely well-organized, never particularly imposing. Shouldn't be much trouble so long as we keep our guards up, unless there's a lot of them." As they walk through the forest, Alan keeps his eye on the trail, looking for any clues that might hasten their search.

Lurkwood Forest: Hour 1

Light shines well through the variety of tall trees that stretch all around. The sight and smells are as natural as it comes, and for a brief moment, one could forget of the dangers the place houses. You make your stride along a well worn dirt trail, occasionally breaking off only to rejoin it later. Between the obtained map and your own abilities of navigation, the path to your destination is well handled.

Alan finds plenty of evidence here and there, but it all seems to belong to the laborers that work the forest. Nothing that suggest goblin activity. Bestiary appears surprisingly comfortable out in this place. There are many small creatures to scan, most of which only seem to respond to his presence well after he's added their identification to his memory. It is an unusual sight, the ease in which this is done, suggesting he possess special capabilities supportive of his task of scanning all creatures. Especially when the others of the group cause all small scale wild life to flee when approached. His single-minded pursuit of this mission may slow down the group a little at times, but it does make the robot extremely perceptive along the journey, along with the investigative Alan.

It is Bestiary's perception which allows him to hear the advancing footsteps echoing further ahead of the group. As he relays this information to the party, the sound becomes detectable to all. The group readies themselves as the foliage ahead begins to shake, and the cause of the sounds become apparent.

Masked men holding back restless Boars emerge from the underbrush up ahead. The look in their eyes and cobbled together leather armors is indication enough for most of you - Bandits. When one shares a glance with the others, your assertion is without doubt. A whip of the leash on the animals brings them to life, snorting and ready to charge. The men grab hold of their weapons, ready to take what is yours for themselves.

Acting together, the bandits all draw on crossbows. In unison they fire, but without aiming - sending a wave of bolts towards the party. One bolt manages to draw blood on Vorag, while Kail's armor deflects another. The rest embed themselves in trees and forest growth.

First combat! Yay! The group moved through the forest without stealth, but so did the bandits, so it all ends up as basic roll initiative combat. Which I did for everybody! Bandits match with Malo and Bestiary was just under them. Then the Boars will go, then everyone else. Varella has Stealth trained, and because I did not give her the opportunity to make like a stealthy person when walking with the group, I rolled a stealth check for her at the stat of combat and it just so barely beat the enemy perceptions. Even though she is visible on the map, she is actually hiding in that spot (if she so wishes to be), having dived into a bush or similar thing during the brief moment before contact. Her turn still takes place after the boars have gone (who will not notice her presence).

The Map: The foliage you see around the corners are trees. They are not thick enough to keep you out of a square, so you can move through them freely. On the top and bottom of the map are two big tree stumps with a fallen log bridging between them - these stumps are about 5 feet in the air, so moving onto them takes 10 feet rather than 5. Once on top movement is normal, while attacking with ranged up there can give advantage shooting on targets on the ground. The fallen log is sturdy enough to travel and shoot from (or drop on top of someone, for melee advantage), but taking damage while on that log will require an acrobatics check to maintain balance or fall prone on the ground (no damage, distance is not far enough).

Boy the map is pretty small. It's my first one. I make them bigger later, I promise! You can move into any square you see there, not just the detailed map but the green squares too. Just.. Might take some work describing what square once you travel beyond the marked letters/numbers!

Spellslots open: 1st- 2

Malo snaps his book shut stashing it away quietly as he's alerted to the danger when suddenly there are crossbow bolts flying into the group, flinching away as one sails through the air and clips the dragonborn he snarls and grabbing at the clasp on his cloak the crystal coming loose and glowing in his hand, as he holds it up there is a charge in the air and a shifting smell you can't quite place. Malo stares off at the bandits slowly opening his mouth as he chooses his words carefully screaming as loud as he can in Draconic "<YOU RIGHT FUCKERS! I'LL GUT YOU FOR THAT!>" Whipping his fingers through the simple motion of his cantrip he snarls out "Ignis Sagitta" sending a streak of fire through the underbrush and catching one of the bandits in the chest.

The streak of fire curves just a bit around the tree stump to collide with the Bandit, pushing him several steps back and panicking as he pats out the remaining flames. There is now a sizable burnt-out hole in his armor.

Bestiary looks down at the fallen bolts. Then looks up at the bandits. "Query. Are your brains functioning properly? Statement. Answer irrelevant." He then steps forward through the trees. Holding up one metal hand which suddenly sprouts flame. He flings it at the already burning bandit. As the bandit falls, burning, he looks to the remaining bandits.

"Surrender?"

Move to F-3. Cast Produce Flame, then throw it at the bandit at A-7.

For only moments did the bandit get to enjoy a fire-free existence, for Bestiary follows Malo's scorching shot with a gout of flame of his own. The fire rages around the man's body, falling him quickly and leaving behind a smoldering mess. The other bandits frantically reload their crossbows, swallowing hesitation as they continue to fight.

It is the Boars who mount an assault next. Kicking forest dirt from their charging hoofs, one crashes into Kail while the other moves around Bestiary and looks poised to strike Malo, but turns its tusks on Alan! Both creature's momentum dig their toothy snouts through their opponents armors, with their thick bodies also threatening to topple them on their backs!

One bandit a smoldering body. Two boars Charge, both hit (Alan, Kail). 4 damage for each (they actually can do 4 on average with 3 extra when Charging, but I rolled low for one and am gonna use it for the others damage too. That's part of the whole low-level-swingy-health thing I'm keeping an eye on). Both of you need to make a Strength Saving Throw, DC 11, or be knocked prone. Prone means things in melee range get advantage against you, but ranged things gets disadvantage. You can spend half your total movement speed to stand up from prone as part of your movement action.

And as a reminder, Varella passed a stealth check and can be hidden where she's at. Which means attacking the nearby boar gives advantage. Or maybe one of the bandits if she has a ranged option (don't think she can move far enough to melee a bandit).

My AC was off by 1, forgot I have the fighter bonus.
If the boar dies, I will drop my greatsword, equip my shield (AC19) and advance to B4.

Varella's Memories, approximately twelve years ago posted:

"Lady Varella what are you doing?" asked the Quartermaster of Emberlight Hold.

Varella took another swing with the practice weapon she'd picked up off the rack. It was a bastard sword nearly as long as she was. "I'm practicing." She replied as if the answer was obvious.

"I can see that. But that weapon is all wrong for you."

Varella stabbed the blunted sword into the ground of the yard. "Why? Because I'm a girl? I'm tougher then all the squires in the Hold! Just ask Gregory how his black eye feels!"

The Quartermaster chuckled. He'd warned Gregory not to tease Varella. "Yes, yes, I know you are pretty as a flower and tough as shield. But that sword is still all wrong for you. This sword is for someone who has brute strength to swing it's weight. You need something with more finesse so that you aren't slowed down." He walked over to the rack and pulled out a quarterstaff that had its ends wrapped in cloth to blunt its blows. "Something like this."

"How am I going to beat up bandits with a walking stick?"

"A walking stick? Do I look like your grandfather? No this is a quarterstaff. It's a weapon for someone who's quick and agile like you are. Would you like to see how you fight with one?" Varella nodded to the Quartermaster. He called over one of his assistants, a guard named Samuel. Then he called over two more soldiers who had been drilling in the yard with swords. He tossed the quarterstaff over to Samuel. "Boys you have the honor of putting on a show for the Lady Varella. I want you two to attack Samuel."

"Which one of us goes first, sir?" ask the first soldier.

"You're both attacking him at the same time."

"But sir he's not even wearing armor," the second stammered.

"Are you deaf or just as dumb as you look? I said you're both attacking him. Get to it!"

The soldiers shrugged at each other and took up a fighting stance. Samuel twirled the quarterstaff around casually then dropped into his own stance. The three began circling around each other until Samuel had one soldier on each side of him. With a yell the first soldier came at him, his fellow following suit. What followed was a blur of blunted weapons and the muffled strikes of hits. Where the soldiers lunged with practiced movements and heavy swings Samuel looked like he was floating. He parried and struck rapidly, sometimes even foiling both soldiers at once. At the end of the fight both soldiers with siting on there asses rubbing bruises while Samuel stood, barely touched."

The Quartermaster turned to look at a wide eyed Varella. "Now Samuel's practiced most of his life to do what he just did. If you are serious about learning how to fight and really dedicate yourself you can be better then him. I feel it in my bones."

Beastiary had given the party enough warning about the approaching bandits to give Varella a chance to find some cover. Moments later crossbow bolts came flying over their heads. Vorag took a hit to the shoulder. The dragonborn fighter did not look amused. Malo and Beastiary returned fire in the most literal sense by setting one of the bandits aflame. The bandits then set their boars loose. They charged in and collided with Alan and Kail. Vorag took out his frustrations on the boar, cleaving it in half with his greatsword.

With the boar in front of her now ready for the roast Varella had a couple choices; she could run over and attack the other boar but lose the advantage of a surprise attack and even provoke one from the boar, or she could draw her shortbow and attack the bandits from a distance with the element of surprise. She decided to put her quarterstaff down and draw her bow. How ironic was that memory of the first time she'd seen the quarterstaff become after Vorag had decided to make some bacon? She nocked an arrow and prepared to fire. Just as she was about to release Vorag charged at the bandit she was targeting. She had to pull her shot up and away or risk hitting the dragonborn. She cursed to herself for not checking her line of sight better. With her foot she pops the quarterstaff into the air, catching it with left hand, and rushes over to the fallen tree in the middle of the path and takes cover.

Shortbow attack with advantage on Bandit in A5: 2#1d20+5 7 7 1d6+3 6 :cripes:

Movement: Move to either C5 or C6 (whichever gives me the best cover against A2 and A3 bandits) and take cover.

My cursed dice ruin my nice roleplay flashback, typical. Lothire picking up my quarterstaff should be an instant action but if need be you can burn my bonus action on it. I'll also need a ruling on how much cover the tree trunk will provide me. Also note there is an attack roll in my log for the boar that Vorag turned into bacon. I misread the attack roll while I was multitasking at work.

"Most plans are critically flawed by their own logic. A failure at any step will ruin everything after it. That's just basic cause and effect. It's easy for a good plan to fall apart. Therefore, a plan that has no attachment to logic cannot be stopped."

Alan Maernos
HP: 6/10; AC: 17

This was it, his first battle! Alan was ready to charge forth and strike down what he presumed was the bandit leader, standing in the middle. With but one stroke of his blades, the brigand would fall and the enemy would almost certainly rout. But before he could leap into heroic action, he found a boar charging him, staggered slightly back by the force of its attack. Alan was hardly pleased by this interference in his glorious battle against evil. "Excuse me, but you're in my way!" Alan's swords struck clean through the beast's neck, dropping its lifeless form to the forest floor, and he immediately moved to engage the crossbow-wielding bandits. He gave up on the bandit who had been in the center, and now made up the right flank, as the distribution of the group meant that any second now, Kail would be running in to slay him first. As his old history teacher, a grizzled war veteran, always told him, no plan survives contact with the enemy.

(Both attacks hit,, for a total of 13 damage. Then I move to B-3, to make sure the bandits don't get too comfy with those crossbows.)

(EDIT: Oh, right, the saving throw. 11 exactly, barely made it. Also remembered the +1 I get to AC from Dual Wielder.)

Sephaerinus Kail
[HP: 7/11] [AC: 16]

Save vs STR DC11: 1d20+3 7 Failed! Woo! Off to a great start.

Kail saw the boar come charging and planted himself as best he could, but the boar was stronger. It slammed into him with full force, knocking the wind out of him and sending him crashing to the ground. Fortunately for Kail, Vorag was ready and slew the offending swine in a single strike. This gave the half-elf time to stand up and recover some of his injured pride. He then began to advance on the bandits.

Stand, then move to E-7. For some reason I thought Vorag was on the other side and also rolled an attack on the already-very-dead boar. I am smart :downs:

By the way, how does 5E handle diagonal movement?

Successful Businessmanga

All squares are 5ft so you can move between them equally, you just can't move through a diagonal if there is a wall or something similar intersecting with the square.

Vorag's mighty swing cleaves deep into the violent piggy, ending it instantly. In the same blow his large sword is put away, drawing on his shield and comparably-smaller-but-still-pretty-drat-intimidating longsword.

Drawing on a shield is an action! I don't know why, but we're going to waive that right now because it's kind of a stupid thing imo, so you do it while moving and your greatsword is stowed. B4 is on top of the northern stump which requires going up an extra 5ft, which you can't quite reach from your spot with 30 speed. We'll put you up against the stump so you're out of LOS and can easily climb up next round if you want (takes 10ft to move into the brown square basically).

Veralla's shot goes wide, but startle the bandit regardless as he fiddles with his crossbow. It distracts the man enough to get under the risen log next to Vorag.

I consider most weapon swapping to be free so no problems there. I've placed you next to Vorag, under the tree log (it's 10ft off the floor so you could probably jump/climb to it next round) so you would have partial cover if the Bandit up on the stump tries to shoot down at you, while out of LOS of the others.

Matching the boar strength for strength, Alan dispatches the creature with a serious precision. His charge puts fear in the Bandits as they all but give up reloading their crossbows in preference of their short blades.

Kail shrugs off the impact, only a slight daze from the encounter, and advances forward.

Since you had no other action than moving (STR was a save and the attack was not possible) we'll say you did a Dash action to move up further, getting you next to Varella against the trunk.

One bandit panics, swinging his blade with no chance to connect, but the other regains enough composure to slip his shortsword into Alan's side. The stab is deep and the man really feels it, but defiantly remains standing.

The Bandit up top runs up to the lip of the stump and hops on top of the fallen log, hoping to get advantage on his shot against any of the three he saw run below him. Unfortunately, the man's footing is horrendously placed, causing his foot to slip, slamming off the log and come crashing down prone on the forest floor.

One bandit misses with a low roll, the other lands a critical against Alan for 5 damage. Criticals have you re-roll the weapon's damage dice, so a 1d6 shortsword becomes 2d6. drat lucky for you Alan! The last Bandit rolled a 1, and though a critical failure is usually just a miss, I spiced things up with a clumsy Bandit falling down for a potentially easy kill.
