"Most plans are critically flawed by their own logic. A failure at any step will ruin everything after it. That's just basic cause and effect. It's easy for a good plan to fall apart. Therefore, a plan that has no attachment to logic cannot be stopped."

Alan Maernos
HP: 23/23; AC: 17 Spells: 2 (L1)

Following his discovery of Vorag's little nighttime incident, Alan proceeded to sleep in a bit, having had his repose interrupted. Thus, he was a little late to the group's decision to join a caravan headed right back to Waterdeep. He could only shrug helplessly as the group asked his opinion, unable to deny the necessity of the trip, given the venom sac's anomalous nature. However, he dreaded his parents' reaction when they found their son returned after less than a month. The caravan owner and his employees recognized Alan almost immediately. Gossip about the noble houses was one of Waterdeep's principle exports, so all it took was for them to recognize the insignia on his ring, and they deduced his identity before Alan had even spoken to them. He had to wonder which servant ended up dismissed for spreading the story. Bronlin threatened to add him to her stew if he declined any further payment, adamant as she was about him amassing the wealth to obtain many forms of enchanted equipment with which to protect himself, so he graciously accepted the offer of pay. The trip on the road was largely uneventful, aside from the rather curious sight of a pack of Allosaurs thousands of miles away their usual habitat. They're not even native to Faerun. Clearly the result of an escape from the private collection of a Waterdhavian noble, or else a rather significant summoning mishap. Come winter, the cold-blooded predators would no longer be a threat to the ecosystem of the northern coastal region they were in, so Alan paid them little mind.

Sephaerinus Kail
[HP: 25/25] [AC: 16][Spells: 3/3]

After spending the evening and some of the night tending to the sick and wounded, Kail finds himself turning in to bed quite late. He makes sure to pack his belongings before turning in, just in case he has to leave in a hurry in the morning. This turns out to be a good idea because, while he manages to completely sleep through Vorag's midnight shenanigans, he is awoken by the hustle and bustle of the caravan's arrival. His offer of help follows soon after Alan's, though thankfully Kail's is met with less whispers and gossip. Waterdeep is not exactly where the half-elf wants to end up, but he is hoping the gang won't remain there too long. Alan probably doesn't want to stick around there either, Kail reminds himself.

Settling into one of the rear carts, Kail thinks about the journey ahead. Aside from Longsaddle, the caravan master didn't mention where any of their other stops would be. That left a sinking feeling in Kail's gut that he couldn't quite dispel. He dug around in his pack until he fished out a flask. He gave it a shake, verifying that it was still mostly full. Good, Kail thought. He might need it. Unscrewing the cap, he takes a long swig, and stares out the window. Two large scaly beasts stare back at him. Great. They can't reach Waterdeep soon enough.

Leaving Oakwood

Sister Saori was there to see the party off as they left with the caravan to Waterdeep. Varella thanked her for her hospitality and asked if there was any messages she could carry to her order's temple in Waterdeep. Once they parted company Varella accepted her up-front pay of 30 gold from the caravan master and took up a post on the fourth wagon.

Local Wildlife along the road

Heads turned when the two large reptiles were seen taking down a deer. It was another strange and amazing sight to behold. Varella did look towards Bestiary and wondered what he would do when he spotted the great creatures.

Varella breaks things, Part 1!

The caravan had made camp in a clearing near a river on the first night. When morning came Varella went about her normal routine. The sound of the rushing water was relaxing and made sinking into her meditation easy. Since the party had returned to Oakwood she felt as if something was different about her. She could not pin down the reason why though. It was like the answer was there in front of her but she could not reach it.

After meditating she went through her exercises. The river bank was littered with half buried tree trunks and water worn rocks from the previous rainy season. They made for excellent practice dummies. She began going through the motions and forms she had been taught since the first day she had lived in the monastery. She struck out at the tree trunk in front of her. Her hands and feet were wrapped in cloth and little pieces of bark stuck to the fabric. There was an audible crack. She paused and flexed her hands. Had she broken a finger? No she had not. Instead a large piece of wood had broken off the trunk where she hit it. “Must have been rotten,” she said to herself.

She began the combination again. Left, right, left, front kick, and then another right. When the last right connected with the tree she felt a burst of energy inside her. And even bigger chunk of wood broke off. She placed her hands on her hips and stared at the holes she had made. She began another combination. This time when her front kick landed she felt the burst of energy flow right through her body and out through her leg. The whole tree trunk broke and went crashing to the dirt.

She walked over to one of the large rocks that had washed up on the stream. She struck at it. Nothing strange happen. She began punching more. Slowly at first then her tempo picked up. She heard the rock crunch. Rock dust clung to her hand wraps. Where she struck was pitted. Reach out to touch the spot the rock began to crumble. One more time she started throwing combinations. Her fist met the rock. There was the loud crack as the rock’s top half split off and fell to the ground. She looked down at her hands. What had just happen? She’d done the same things as always. She looked at her hands palms facing up. Then it came to her. The tradition of the Open Hand. She’d unlocked it! She’d become able to manipulate not only her ki but the ki around her to strike with amazing force.

One of the caravan guards came running towards her. “What’s going on down here? We heard a loud bang.”

Varella looked at him and then to the rock. “I was practicing. I punched the rock. It broke in half.”

“You broke that rock with your hand?” he asked.

“Yes, with this one.” She held out her right hand to him. Was she imagining it or did he back away ever so slightly?

“Okay…..the caravan is getting ready to break camp.”

Varella looked up at the sun on the horizon. It was making it’s morning climb. “Yes lets get back.” She said. She couldn’t shake a feeling that this was all somehow familiar to her. The guard and her made their way back. She managed to eat a quick meal with the others before boarding the cart she was assigned to. Absentmindedly she reached into her travelling pack. When she pulled her hand out she was holding a paper card with a detailed illustration. It was an old divination card she had been given on the first day she was at the monastery. Then she remembered everything.

[HP: 27/27] [AC: 15] [Lvl1: 4/4] [Lvl 2: 2/2] [Wild Shape: 2/2]

Bestiary sits atop one of the caravan carts, watching the passing scenery with mild interest. That is until the two large beasts take down a deer, and carefully watch the movement of the caravan. Most would be content staying with the caravan, and away from the massive beasts, where it is safer. Bestiary is not like most. So he flaps his little wings, and lifts up from the cart. Then he flies over to the beasts, staying well out of their reach. And he begins to scan them. They don't seem to be causing any harm to others, well except the deer, so he does not terminate them with extreme prejudice, instead using more merciful methods of scanning and analyzing the beasts.

When he finishes he flaps with a bit more vigor and makes his way back to the moving caravan, finding his old spot and taking his place once more. Ignoring any bafflement at his actions.

Bestiary

Both creatures become mildly annoyed as the machine-man makes his flight over to them, but a safe enough distance above them also keeps them calm enough not to run. As one takes a bite out of the carcass, the other snaps at the air towards him, displaying hostility though only one of warning. His scan is fairly quick, and his results find that their claws and teeth share in similar basic compounds as does the piece the druid gave him, but the percentage of identification match is too low to be the creature he has been quested to find. Just in time, as the robots presence has annoyed the creatures enough for them to finish their meal and be off in a hurry. Bestiary can hear the sound of jackals off in the distance, no doubt having waited to scavenge what remained of the carcass.

Varella

Varella recalls back to her question for Saori. She did happen to have a letter, one to be handed to Brother Makosi, and giving it to Varella seemed a good choice. It is a simple letter, and if Varella dares a peak, finds that it is one that summarizes the last few months at the settlement. Appears this man would be an old friend and a current pen pal. She mentioned he should be somewhere around the famous sun soul temple.

Kail

When Kail reaches in his bag for a flask, his hand bumps into a bottle he had not seen before. Filled with a red substance, he knows it as a potion of health. A note attached to the bottle is short but clear: "A thank you from the wounded. - Saori"

Outside the Jurassic Park moment and Varella punching a tree and rock to death (which either impressed or scared the merchants, depending on who you ask), the rest of the day is without incident, along with the following night. Which means..

Day 2

The first day comes and goes, and day 2 commences. Alan finds himself constantly dealing with questions over his Waterdeep departure and his family. No doubt the merchants on the caravan are hoping to exploit some juicy gossip about him, his family, or anything that they could use to their own ends. The only one who does not partake is the caravan leader - perhaps too busy with his position at the helm, though you catch him looking off into the distance frequently. He may be acting considerate, or his mind is simply elsewhere.

Sometime during the mid day point, a troubling event occurs. The lead wagon's wheel hits a nasty bump and comes loose, grinding the caravan to a rather abrupt halt. One of the very few helping-hands on the caravan jumps out with oils and jack in hand, while another retrieves a stored replacement wheel. They seem to have the issue well in hand, until a series of shouts from the west rings out.

Alan and Vorag, having taken positions up in the front end of the caravan, duck for cover as a spray of bolts fling out from the tall grass to the west. 5 Bandits have popped out of the tall grass, unloading their bolts at the caravan lead wagons. A driver of the second wagon is injured, while the rest of the bolts slam into the side of the carts and wagons as the two helper hands dive under the wagon in panic. A sixth Bandit, looking much bigger than the others and barking orders, waves his sword and dagger around commanding the others.

: "Let loose ya' arrows, boys! If ya' see the stool pigeon, be sure ta' save 'em for me!"

Near the front of the caravan, wagons 1, 2 and 3 are being assaulted by Bandits. Vorag assigned himself to wagon 1, while I randomly rolled Alan as being on wagon 2 (actually a cart but we'll just call 'em wagons) as he did not specify where he wanted to be. For being near the assaulted point, Vorag and Alan will be allowed to go first in the round's order without rolling initiative. Vorag did not beat their stealth with active perception, but because Alan did, Alan gets to participant during the surprise round as well as take his normal round before the Bandits (this basically means Alan goes twice). Normally you'd roll stealth for a surprise round, but I wanted to reward his successful perception check and it works out as the rest of the group trying to catch up to the head of the caravan.

All bandit shots miss Vorag and Alan thanks to their Cover (Alan for crouching in his cart, Vorag for ducking under the windows in the wagon). Everyone else will be Story Moded - you'll start at the northern part of the map and I will roll up your initiatives. Which turns out is lumped up because bandits rolled 1, Captain rolled 23. Go figure.

So for clarity: Alan goes twice (surprise + normal turn) and Vorag goes his normal turn. After those two, Bandit Captain goes, then the rest of you, then normal bandits (if any alive) and repeat from there.

As the bandit attack starts, Alan smiles, glad to have something to take his mind off what will be an inevitable meeting with his parents in the near future. He'd never used magic much before, having learned it more at the behest of his family than for any other reason, but he was amazed at how keenly he could feel the swords in his hands, as though the bonding ritual made them extensions of his body. He ran up next to a pair of bandits, the furthest ones from his friends, and began his onslaught. Each blow struck true, his blades screaming death as they flew threw the air. The bandits don't stand a chance, blades slicing through them like they weren't even there. At the end of his whirling attack, Alan releases his blade, sending it flying into the chest of the next bandit over. As soon as the bandit is impaled, however, the sword vanishes, reappearing in Alan's hand due to the magic he's infused it with. All at once, the three bandits collapse, bleeding their last on the forest floor. Alan cocked his head back toward the others, smiling victoriously. "You could say I've developed a new edge in combat." Then, almost as an afterthought, Alan points a sword over his shoulder, launching three motes of bright light unerringly into the chest of yet another bandit, sending him sprawling, the life forced out of him by the magical assault.

(That's four hits on the chaff, namely bandits 4 and 5. With enough damage to annihilate them both. And, let's get creative with this fanky new Eldritch Knight powers. Flat Dexterity check against Bandit 3's AC to deliver the remaining 13 damage at range, by way of Cleave rules, barely hits. Then, Action Surge to Magic Missile Bandit 2. It goes pretty well.)

"You! You bastard! I swore I'd gut ya', and now I be makin' that promise!"

It isn't too clear who he's singling out, until he madly charges with two flung daggers flying towards Kail! One sticks into the nearby wagon, but the other cuts a decent wound across the paladin.

Harold's armor consists of overlapping leathers crudely sewn in, with rows of spikes acting as rivet points lining all over. Bestiary calculates the armor's spikes would be sufficient enough to hurt the man, but the interaction of the man's armor with anyone in melee could also be to the captain's benefit. The safer calculation of targeting the blade becomes the more prudent move. In moments the long blade in his hand heats up a bright red, hurting the captain and dropping the blade in the process.

Varella's staff strikes true on the remaining Bandit, who surprisingly still has a lot of fight left in 'em. He surprises Varella with some martial arts of his own, slashing his scimitar with a flurish.

Harold drops his scimitar and takes the damage, Bandit takes damage. Bandit critical hits Varella and rolls damage for 10! Vorag and Alan are good to go.

As Malo nears he realizes this plan is stupid, stopping in his tracks he raises his hand and summons his sleep spell tossing it casually behind his fellow half-elf knowing of his immunity to the spell. A wave of shimmering light floats towards the bandit and he finds his eyes drooping before he falls to the ground.

Malo grins as he finishes walking up and gently pulls the bandit's hands behind his back and snaps on a pair of iron manacles, to any stares he simply raises his hands and says "My ma was an adventurer she always says a good pair of manacles can save your life! My aunt always said a pair of manacles can come in handy with other things too but she never did say what."

Malo is moving to d-8 pulling out his manacles and casting sleep at a-5 then continuing movement to d6 Kail and Malo are immune so the Bandit boss will take the full brunt. Manacles go on.

The bandit struggles to stay awake as the magic takes over.

: "I ain't done.. beaten yer', Uhh.. zzz.."

And with Malo's plan enacted, the bandit is out cold, cuffed and enjoying a snooze on the ground.

Combat over! Story Mode engaged. Any who pilfer his pockets will find 34 gold coins and two gems worth 100 each, so 234 gold basically. One of the gems has a note wrapped on it - "Don't touch! Is mine!" I'll give people time to digest/do what they want with ol' Harold here before moving on.

e: A little early to be saying but JUST so people have time to think about it, remember you can change your place in the caravan before things get rolling, or stick with your same spots.

During combat

The bandit came at Varella with his scimitar flashing. Varella parried a blow the the bandit feinted. She was caught out of position and the blade flashed through the tall grass and into her midsection. She let out a loud curse. A bright line of blood appeared on her robes and soon spread outward. Varella leapt back to create some distance between her and opponent. Before she could make a counter move against the bandit Alan came charging in and nearly took the bandits head clean off. He turned and rushed at the bandit leader and joined Vorag in his attack. Soon the bandit leader had nothing to boast about. Malo ended the fight by putting the man named Harold to sleep.

After combat

Her jaw was clenched from the pain of her wound. Holding her staff in her right hand and her stomach with her left she made her way out of the tall grass to the wagon she had her things in. Tossing the staff in the back and taking a seat in the wagon she reached into her backpack for her healing kit. She opened the kit and rolled it out on the seat next to her. To her companions she yelled out “If you have that bastard under control I could use a little help.” She then undid the top of her robe and peeled it off leaving her skin on the top half of her body bare except for her underclothes. An angry looking slash was easy to see. Varella took a bottle from the kit and uncorked it. “This part always hurts,” she said and poured it onto her wound. Malo began to count the languages that Varella swore in. She dried the wound and applied a healing ointment. Then she careful began to wrap the wound in clean cloth. When she finishes she puts her robe top loosely over her shoulders so it’s easier to check the wound.

Plain to see on Varella's bare back is an intricate and detailed tattoo. It shows a scene dominated by a night sky filled with stars and a mountain with many buildings and paths all along its height. Clouds wrap around the mountain peak and a stream runs down from the midpoint of the mountain and ends in a waterfall pouring into a great river flowing past the mountains base. Green plains and trees make up the bottom of the tattoo with the lights of villages in the distance.

Varella will use a charge in her healing kit for a max 1d8+2 hit die heal. This brings her to full health

Sephaerinus Kail
[HP: 25/25] [AC: 16][Spells: 3/3][Healing Kit: 9/10]

Kail's heart is clearly not in this fight. He can barely muster a defense against Harold, let alone strike out against him. If not for the others, Kail may well have been killed here. Thankfully Malo's sleep spell takes effect against the battered bandit quite quickly, and then the boy produces a pair of shackles and puts Harold in irons. And finally, he hands Kail the key. All Kail can do is produce a weak smile and a quiet 'thank you.'

Taking a moment to kneel in front of the unconscious bandit, Kail wonders what to do next. He looks around, and stares farther off the trail, to a hill a little ways in the distance.

"Vorag," Kail calls out. "Can you help me? I need an extra pair of hands."

With Vorag's help, Kail moves Harold off to the hill, out of sight and earshot of the others. He thanks Vorag for his help and asks to be left alone with the man.

For a time, there is nothing. The caravan and its guards simply wait. Eventually, Kail emerges from the horizon, staring at the dagger in his hand before sliding it back into its sheath. In his other hand is Malo's manacles. It takes several minutes for him to get to the road but he does not call out or gesture to the others. He simply walks, eyes down, dark and troubled. When he finally reaches the others, he walks to Malo and hands him the manacles and key.

"Harold does not need these anymore," Kail says dryly, walking away without waiting for a response. He silently boards his cart and puts his head in his hands.

I forgot about being able to max hit die heals with a heal kit, so ignore the orokos roll. Spending 2d10 hit dice with a healing kit charge to heal to full.

Varella watched the scene from her wagon. Vorag helped Kail take the man named Harold off into the distance. Vorag returned to the caravan a short time later. Many minutes pass until Kail came back into view. He threw Malo the manacles and said something to him. She couldn't make out what it was. She started to get up to ask but the ache of her injury sat her back down. The wound itself was closed and healing due to the ointments and herbs but the pain was still there. She'd have to let the others pry answers out of Kail for the time being. Whatever had been said and done off in the distance hadn't been easy on the paladin. That much was sure.

Aftermath

Kail returns a somber man as he boards his chosen spot on the caravan. The one merchant he shares his ride with senses the weight he carries, and being of weak constitution himself, looks skittish as he does his best to leave the paladin alone. While Varella mends, Malo helps the driver who managed to take a bolt in the shoulder, getting him bandages and swapped out for another to manage the driving. The helping hand comes out from under the wagon looking jittery, but uninjured. The broken wheel is swapped, oiled and replaced without incident, and soon the caravan is ready to move on. The leader merchant moves out from the safety of his wagon, walking back to the combat scene and addresses those in the area.

: "A mighty fine job, my friends. You've earned your gold with this alone, but I beg you stay vigilant. I fear there are more things out here than reckless bandits."

Day 2, Night

Your first day's conflict was handled well, and that night you slept well in front of campfires and the mild tunes of a lute. Alan finds the merchants no longer harass him as they were before. His display of skill with a blade had a hand in that, no doubt. The second day fairs good, although cloudy skies threatens to make the night significantly wet.

Sure enough, the sky breaks into heavy rain fall a few hours before camping was planned. Tarps are unrolled from the sides of the wagons and carts, covering them up. Those of you traveling outside or in the carts move over to a wagon - not a lot of room with everyone doing the same, but enough to get a decent, dry sleep in.

Sometime during the night, the group is suddenly awoken by the whining of the horses around the tail end of the caravan. Kail and Varella are the only two who see directly what is happening, while the rest scramble out of their wagons with fighting gear in hand as soon as a sound of bursting ground reaches them.

Don't worry about putting on/off armor for sleep for this trip. I don't want to deal with that set of rules right now.

Two large, very ugly Ankheg have busted out from the dirt ground right underneath Vorag's two horses. One is clamped down immediately by the creature's claws and gets a bite taken out of it, entirely locked in the monsters grip. The other fails to surprise the horse, backing off as the horse flails its rear kicks at the creature.

Both Ankheg spent their first round actions attacking the horses. Because they attacked while burrowed, perception for Varella or Kail was done with disadvantage and no luck, so the first round is just for the creature's "surprise" round. The horse on the left is grappled and is severely damaged, but the rope attaching it to the caravan snapped from the attack. The horse on the right avoided injury, but its rope keeps it from being able to run. Both Ankheg rolled 1s for initiative, so this round everyone goes before the creatures. Hanging hooded lanterns keep the caravan and the area up to 30 feet from them well lit, another 30ft out from that is dimly lit, then darkness.

If someone wants to take a free action to make a relevant skill check (not sure what that would be for monster knowledge. Survival? Nature?), I'll divulge a little extra info about Ankhegs for your character.

Oh, that's right, I can do this!" Alan runs forward, blades drawn, and with a dramatic swing, he sends a bolt of flame hurtling at the Ankheg in front of him, scorching the giant insect's armor.

♫Ankheg's a big scary lout,

It's not very reassuring.

PS: GO FOR THE EYES, BOO ok real post below:

While his shanty isn't very helpful, Kail still has to do something about the attacking beasts. Especially the one that is maiming a poor horse!

Holding his glaive high above his head, the half-elf leaps off the back of the cart and rams it home into the ankheg. While it doesn't stab any eyes, it does slip between the creature's armor plating and pierces into the soft flesh below.

Malo didn't truly believe the caravan master when he had been talking about how dangerous the path they were taking was but here they were being assaulted again in the middle of the night by some kind of horrible beasts, his eyes changed by recent events Malo is perturbed slightly as he can see the creatures eerily clearly in the poor lighting he notices for the first time his normal darkvision extending well beyond it's usual range the regular small disturbances in deeper shadow he would normally perceive gone.

Shaking his head he comes back to the matter at hand and rushes forward, a spell that is becoming quickly familiar to the group hissing from his mouth alongside a crackle of chaotic energy that flicks off of his tongue as he casts at the creature flinging his hand forward, the air around him taking on a charge as a beam of force slams into it's target.

Pelted by magic, the creature on the right recoils from the damage. The creature on the left takes Kail's glaive near the center of its chest, drawing goopy blood and giving the horse a chance at freedom. Although gravely injured, it manages to slip free and trots off into the long grass, where it lays down from exhaustion and blood loss. The creature manages to shrug off Kail's fear effect.

The horse isn't in any danger of dying yet and neither is it going anywhere. The other one is still tied up and panic'd, be careful fighting near it.

Vorag
[HP: 26/26] [THP: 8] [AC: 19]

After the battle with Harold's bandits, Vorag was supportive of Kail. The dragonborn has no idea of the history between the two, but he can sense there was some. Did Kail let the man go, or murder the prisoner? Vorag couldn't be sure and truthfully it probably didn't matter. Killing the man wouldn't have sat right with Vorag, not off the field of battle, but he respected Kail enough to leave the decision in his hands.

Drifting off to sleep, Vorag thinks on how his companions had proven themselves once again. Varella and Malo had held their own, and Vorag had a new respect for Alan after his murderous rampage. It was damned impressive. Vorag hasn't seen anything like that since his days in the arena.

As the sounds of battle wake him, Vorag curses at the insects eating his horses. He just got those! Rushing to the front line, he unleashes a blast of arcane energy. Running throws off his aim, and it veers off course and blows a bush to pieces. It occurs to him that he hasn't mentioned this particular ability to anyone, yet. He didn't have an excuse ready.

Vorag and Bestiary catch up to the group, while Varella puts her training to marvelous use. A serious kick to the creature's front leg causes it to spin on its back, giving her a shot at it's less-protected underbelly. She can feel its exoskeleton crack under her fist.

As per her attack as well as Nature check, Ankhegs have a weak underbelly and their AC drops to 11 when prone. It failed its dex check, causing her second flurry to connect.

These Ankhegs have not eaten in days, and you've interrupted their horsey meal. Kail finds himself under assault by the hunger-driven creature, matching its powerful claws strike for strike and staying well clear of its biting maw. Varella is in for a surprise as the most wounded of the two begins to stand up and hork at her, as if a cat spitting up a hair ball.
