Thing that always gets me about Africa, as a continent, is when you go and look at poo poo like the brass sculptures made by the Yoruba and in the ancient empire of Benin in the 800s or 1100s or whatever. It starts out really realistic. It's like cast portraits of people with little holes for rooted hair or other materials. Then, suddenly, the quality just starts to decline. The castings become thicker, more clumsy. The metal is of a less higher quality and grade. The works are far more stylized and less obviously meant to be specific individual people. So you have this whole culture of incredibly lifelike brass and terracotta sculpture that all but vanishes for no determinable reason. I mean, sure, you still have people working in the medium and producing works, but it's not at all the same. A lot of poo poo in Africa is like that. You wind up with these incredibly amazing bursts of culture, works, and production ... then something just happens and no one rightly knows what the gently caress.

Nah, not necessarily. The Benin Empire was pretty much king poo poo culturally and militarily in their region up until the 1890s. They continued to produce, and be infamous for, brass and metal work. It just wasn't anywhere near as good as it had been centuries prior. If you check out the pictures of what the British hauled out when they wrecked the place in 1897 and compare it to what was knocking around from the 1100s, it's pretty drat obvious that some sort of shift happened. Edit: Of note is that old Benin isn't the same animal as present-day Benin. The empire's capital was in Nigeria and ethnically Edo. tokomon fucked around with this message at 19:30 on Mar 12, 2015 |

One glorious weekend years ago, there was a free trial weekend of a Nollywood movie channel. If there's one amazing thing to come out of Africa it's got to be Nollywood movies. They've all been made on terrible, shaky camcorders, have awful sound, and lots of slow motion/speeding up bits. They usually have a strong Christian message, with wicked women who go against the bible and therefore doom themselves and their families. Anyway, YouTube has lots of full length movies, because I can't quite describe the absolute insanity and awfulness of them. Here are a few trailers to give you a taste: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YTAC06G9YXA Bad Romance - Sort of looks like an African Monsignor Martinez https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFqYiKDwt0I Terminator rip off with SPECIAL EFFECTS https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QKqzPi8OvMw Misplaced Desires - A guy's wife eats too many hot dogs and he has terrible stimulated sex with a Nigerian hottie
