I just found out the latest entry in Liarsoft's Steampunk series (Gahkthun of the Golden Lightning) is being localized, which is nice since I have a soft spot for the series. Does anyone know anything about Mangagamer before I get my hopes up? Are they that one company that's notorious for having series end up in development hell or is that another one.

All I know is that they kind of botched the Higurashi release but are trying to make up for it now. Beyond that I'm in the dark. And while it's okay to talk about localization companies let's avoid talking about that particular game because it is 18+ and this is a thread for non-porn visual novels. Thanks.

You can find out the status of the game on their Staff Blog, though I won't put up a link because, of course, most of what they do is 18+.

Looking at the blog, their current status for the Higurashi rewrite is :

Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni (Re-Translation)
–Onikakushi: Double Checking Script, Updating UI
–Translation: Watanagashi at 14.7%

This is probably old news but that weird lookin thing that 07th Expansion is releasing looked really familiar.

Then I remembered that old "when they cry 3" picture that got posted around like a year or so ago and the chick on the right is the same so uh maybe it secretly is? Title even has the one red letter thing that Higurashi and Umineko had.

Wouldn't be surprised if Ryukishi just ended up recycling that design or something but I want to be hopeful that WTC is not dead.

edit: nevermind that new thing is just a collaboration, RIP.

Finished Never 7. That sure was the most depressing ending in the Infinity series, at least in my opinion anyway.

Getsuya

Finished Aiyoku no Eustia: Angel's Blessing except for the bonus stories that I'll get back to someday. The entire game was really amazing and solid up until the last chapter which completely sucked. I ended up skipping through the bulk of the last chapter to the end, which was at least pretty good and wrapped everything up nicely. They must have gotten someone else to write the last chapter or the writer must have choked or something because it's on a whole different level from the rest of the game. Still, that's only about 5 hours of an otherwise stellar 50 hour game, and the rest of the story is definitely worth reading.

Now I just need to figure out what to get next. I want something a little shorter since holy cow I never realized how long reading a 50 hour game could take.

(it takes 50 hours, for those wondering)

Was Higanbana pre or post the death of his best friend?

Because it clearly affected all his later writing.

e: and by original music I mean the one music originally came with the game, not whatever garbage MangaGamer replaced it with in their first release.

Well, that's encouraging at least. Though it's not like the old music was that good for the first four chapters anyway; the real travesty was when they hosed around with the music in the Kai chapters.

Man, the art seems generic as hell here... well, some of it is just terrible. At least there will be Steins;Gate on the Vita, may double dip for that.

Ugh, I see they still have that ugly UI in the bottom right hand corner. Assuming it's the same basic engine it might be possible to hide it by tinkering with the files.

Also thank Christ it looks like they'll be using A.D. years rather than Showa Era. God that got annoying after a while in the first translation.

There's an "auto hide user interface"-option that hides it unless you mouse into that corner.

The terrible art is the original art. The generic stuff is the new art. Higurashi and Umineko are some of the better VNs out there.

So how do the different routes in Steins; Gate actually work? So far I've just been looking at every text and choosing replies pretty randomly and answering every phone call. Do you ever get a VLR style flowchart with what routes and choices there are?
Also there's a trophy for deleting a text without reading it but I can't work out how to delete them at all. :v:

Regarding Steins;Gate Vita, is there anything I should know about going in, like game breaking bugs? VLR's made me wary ever since I first tried the PEC room.

There is essentially only one route that you are forced upon regardless of what you do with your phone and it's the main story; the ending you get for that will vary slightly depending upon your responses with Mayuri and Kurisu. If you pick very specific choices though, you'll get a third "true" ending. All of these again are the same route, just with different endings. The true route might require a walkthrough but I also wouldn't be surprised if you just stumbled onto it either.

However at the end of a few chapters there is a very specific, obvious, binary choice presented to you that will allow you to instantly splinter off into a side route/ending. These are very short and again should be fairly obvious that they are kind of a sidestory rather than something that wraps up the main story. Once you've splintered off there is nothing left to do until you reach that sidestory's ending.

It's also written by the guy who wrote Spice and Wolf, an anime that made economics fun and interesting, so the guy knows his stuff. It got some rough reviews when it first came out because it was one of the early VNs on Steam and people didn't really know what it was supposed to be, but from what I understand it's supposed to be pretty good.

Alternatively, now is the perfect time to grab a bunch of the cheap VNs and try them out so we can get some reviews up to help future generations out.

I like it, but "economics + the moon" makes it exactly my cup of tea, so it's hard for me to guess how anyone less interested in those things would feel about it.

The main character is a real prick, but he's supposed to be, so I think it works.
