I think in LW you're a lot more likely to get council requests (may even be hard-coded to get a certain amount), so if you don't have any research they just ask for sats. One of the beginning France bonuses increases how many requests you get.

Because almost every research adds new council requests with rewards, to make up for the fact you only get cash for abduction rewards, planning research around requests isn't a bad idea.

Thin Men

Thin men are god damned dangerous, and they only get worse with time. Some leader perks include Lightning Reflexes, and squadsight (!!!). Their annoying ability is Acid (which I talked about before). In many ways the Thin Men are worse than later enemies.

More Mechanic Talk

Camera Angles

Never mentioned this. Long war supports more camera angles. That's how I get the 'troops eye view' angles. It varies from directly overhead (F2), to horizontal (F9). Probably required as meld has more possible spawn locations.

Meld

There is no more Meld timer in the corner. This is because the Long War devs wanted up to 3 canisters on a map and the UI couldn't support it, so they just got rid of it. The meld timers work similarly to that of vanilla (some amount of time based on how far away it is). As with vanilla, completing the mission gives you all unexpired meld.

Meld gives an indication of how many resources the aliens have. The minimum is 5 when aliens have next to no resources, and up to 30 (I think) when they have a ton of resources, so it sort of gives you a clue of the aliens' strength. If you grab a canister that has 30 in one mission, and in the next mission there is 5, there's something really big coming. This has nothing to do with alien research, but does affect mission difficulty, volume, enemy types, and mission types.

Also, you get a fraction of a meld for each enemy you kill (I think its one meld per 5 enemies per mission, but some enemies will provide 1 or 2 meld for their death), but this is only the case if all the damage taken was through conventional methods (no explosives or fire).

Veloxyll: I'm not sure what you're referring to exactly - on the monthly report countries names are colored differently based on the panic level. Canada's font is green because they have lower panic. I'll touch on worldwide panic next update, and I'll talk about Exalt when they become more relevant.

Absolutely true. Accuracy goes all to poo poo without hardening and experience. That's why cops shoot for poo poo most of the time, they rarely Take their guns out except at the range.

The problem I have with X-com rookies is that the soldiers you get are supposed to be hard motherfuckers with tons of experience. Even though they are facing alien menaces, their accuracy shouldn't be as bad as it is.

Long War adds 'Cinematic Mode', which gives all your soldiers and aircraft +15% chance to hit.

I figure most nations don't really want to risk losing their best soldiers to an experimental project, so they send folks straight out of boot to XCOM, and they even charge good money for these guys. Most of nations of Earth are really not interested in the XCOM project at all.

Moderate abduction in another urban setting. I sent the same people because they were off fatigue, and I need to start building up corporals.

:siren:Congratulations thejoshie in making Corporal! Thejoshie needs a code name. I thought of one, but I would like input from the thread.:siren:

Lance Corporal Engineer Perks

Holotargeting v. Smoke Grenade v. Sapper

Sapper is one of the Engineer's defining perks. Sapper makes explosive grenades more likely to destroy cover, a must for the early game.
Smoke grenade is a good perk if you want more sources of smoke. Some people take Sapper, then other support perks, but I'm not the fan of the 'Jack of all trades' Engineer. I miss having smoke grenades.
Holotargeting is a weird perk on Engineers, given the rest of the tree. Honestly, I wouldn't bother with this perk, but it may not be a bad idea to spec an Engineer with holotargeting if you don't have other sources of holotargeting. If you want to go support with no smoke, and no sapper, then holotargeting is always handy.

I lean toward support engineers, but blowing up cover is almost vital for the early game, especially as I'm getting late scopes and laser weapons.

Bad Guy Showcase

Seekers

Seekers seem like they're less likely to go stealth in Long War, their AI has been unleashed more or less - from what I understand in vanilla, seekers were forbidden from strangling multiple soldiers at a time (I may be wrong). In Long War they can be especially dangerous if they're smart, and decide to strangle multiple soldiers at once (I had 4 soldiers strangled at once. It was stressful). They are another form of flying, high DR enemy. Tactics don't differ too much from vanilla, you can have an overwatch party, grenade where you think they are, or use battlescanners to reveal them.

One big difference in LW is that sidearms no longer have infinite ammo. In fact, at the beginning, the ballistic pistol can only fire two shots before you need to reload. Sidearms also have the same long range accuracy penalty that shotguns do, so they're not any better for shooting.

This mission was loving tough, I was going to apologize it took so long but changed my mind. I was thinking of splitting it, but due to the stretched out nature I don't think it would be very good to do so. I added an annotation near the beginning to skip some of the tactical talk for impatient folks. As mentioned in the video, we lack the training to properly tackle a terror mission, mostly because we only have 8 missions total under our belt right now. Pressure is only going to get worse on the tactical side until we get more downed UFOs and Squad Size 1.

On a lighter note, :siren:TomViolence is a corporal, and needs a code name!:siren:

Perk Talk

Steadfast v. Covering Fire v. Executioner

Steadfast prevents soldier from panicking due to anything but psi panic. Covering fire allows overwatch fire to react based on enemy actions. Executioner gives +10 aim and crit for bad guys at 1/2 health or lower.

Infantry make great overwatch specialists, and Covering Fire can make captures much easier and safer. Enemies also know how to go just into sight range to avoid getting overwatched, so covering fire can allow overwatch shots to proc on those guys.

Executioner is a great 'statistics' perk. I used to take Executioner all the time.

I try to make 2 Steadfast infantry, because of the bonus will, and the fact that steadfast can break panic chains. There's another reason I'll discuss another time. I'll make a couple overwatch infantry, and a couple 'damage' infantry, so all three of these perks can be useful.

Steadfast v. Flush v. Close Combat Specialist

I discussed Steadfast. The immunity to panic is pretty handy for a soldier who is getting hit, so this may be something to consider on a bio-tank assault, it also improves psionic assaults later.
Flush is a pretty great skill in my opinion, but I have other soldiers that take Flush. Maybe I'll take it on an assault someday, but...
Close Combat Specialist is an assault-unique perk, and I love, love, love CCS. It's pretty easy to plan around CCS, and its saved my bacon more times than I can count. The strategies that can be planned around CCS are super fun and super useful. Great for the aggressive strategies (that I like using). I had a steadfast assault once for a specific reason, but unfortunately it meant not using that assault to its fullest capabilities, that, and when I needed that assault, I had to hope that assault was available. I typically just stick to CCS assaults.

The Problem of Turn 0 Contact

A lot of time was spent figuring out the first move for this mission.I'm not sure how clear I was in the video with the problem of the nearby floaters. Suppose you have Turn 0 contact (contact without making any moves). You decide to be clever, and use your turn to overwatch everybody without moving (thus, not activating the bad guys, right?). The issue is that the aliens activate on your turn after you perform your last action, then they get their regular turn during the Alien Activity phase (this is especially deadly when you have turn 0 contact with melee aliens).

Having turn 0 contact is rare, but I'd take the rare turn 0 contact over the other options. In prior versions, alien groups were almost completely randomized, and turn 0 contact happened more frequently. They fixed it so aliens cannot spawn in sight range, but that gave less room for the randomly generated groups, meaning you're more likely to have a multi-group activation.

Finally they changed it so groups are more evenly distributed over the map, the side effect being that you're more likely to have a group at the fringes of your sight radius.

It's possible to get a 'turn 0-like' activation even in vanilla. This happens when you end your turn in sight range of inactive aliens. They then proceed to take cover in their activation move, take a move to flank you, then shoot. It's cheap, and one of the many quirks of going with the 'alien pod' system that Firaxis implemented.

Let's Talk about the Panic Tracker

Instead of a 0-5 scale for council panic, we now have a 0-100 scale. Various things change panic levels (I'm doing this by memory, and I might have some slight errors):

Things that increase panic

- Any failed abduction mission
- Some failed council missions
- A newly created abduction mission
- Successful UFO bombing missions
- Uncontested UFOs
- Shot down satellites
- Some exalt sabotage
- Terror Missions that result in any civilian deaths (A perfect Terror mission results in no panic increase. I've only done this once and it was by accident)
- Terror missions that occur in a country that is part of the same continent (If a terror mission increases panic in Australia by 10, it increases panic in India, Japan, and China by 5)

Things that reduce panic

- Successful abduction missions
- Successful council missions
- Taking down an exalt cell
- Shooting down a UFO
- New Satellites
- Fulfilling council requests
- Base assaults

Panic management can be pretty difficult at times due to the aliens' tendency to focus on high panic nations. The trade off is that you don't have to deal with the three 'choices' on abduction missions. Also, because an abductor spawns abduction missions, you can get abduction missions even in countries you have satellites over. Nations are likely to leave the council at 95+ panic, and are guaranteed at 100 panic.

Bad Guy Showcase

Floaters

Floaters used to be a 'meh' enemy in prior versions. This is because they have surprisingly low aim (I think 50-ish on Normal difficulty), and would typically overwatch if they were pinned by overwatch or suppression if their chances to hit weren't that great. The new floater AI can be pretty terrifying, as they move more aggressively, and are more likely to ignore attempts to pin them using overwatch and suppression (their base aim is still around 50). They are also more likely to fly out of range, and come back on a nasty flank. There are some abilities that exist to help counter floaters, but in my opinion the best counter is shotguns and suppression.

Starting abilities include Covering Fire, and later on things like Close Combat Specialist. Oh, and they also have (effectively) infinite fuel so they can properly patrol.
