We aren't too far away from the starting baseball for real, so I think it's time to put in some predictions for the season. Last year lots of people predicted the Rangers would make the playoffs (and even win the world series!) so expect to be horribly wrong in the coming months because of injuries or overestimating how bad your team really is. Make your predictions off whatever - the latest in stats that'd make Dave Cameron blush, blatant homerism, or good ol' intuition that would make Joe Morgan proud. Estimate W-L if you really want to.

Here are my blatant homer picks:

Playoffs are no big deal,
don't have a crap attack.
You are welcome for the exact same predictions as everyone else.

AL East
1. Toronto Blue Jays
2. Baltimore Orioles*
3. Boston Red Sox
4. Tampa Bay Rays
5. New York Yankees

This is a tough division to predict, because each team is deeply flawed in some way, and I am not sure which team is going to overcome those flaws. I figure it will be the Jays, but because nothing good happens to Toronto-based sports teams, expect them to finish third.

AL Central
1. Cleveland Indians
2. Detroit Tigers*
3. Chicago White Sox
4. Kansas City Royals
5. Minnesota Twins

Like the AL East, I think any non-Twins team has a chance to win this division. I figure it will be a tight race.

AL West
1. Seattle Mariners
2. Los Angeles Angels
3. Oakland Athletics
4. Texas Rangers
5. Houston Astros

Uh, I feel really weird picking the Mariners to win this division. I am just not a huge fan of the Angels, and I have no idea how the A's or Rangers will do this year.

NL East
1. Washington Nationals
2. Miami Marlins
3. New York Mets
4. Atlanta Braves
5. Philadelphia Phillies

At this point, there's no reason to go against the Nationals. They are the team to beat. I almost put the Braves in last place, but the Phillies look too pitiful this year. They may be the worst team in the league.

NL Central
1. St. Louis Cardinals
2. Pittsburgh Pirates*
3. Chicago Cubs
4. Cincinnati Reds
5. Milwaukee Brewers

I prefer the Pirates, but I went with the Cardinals, because baseball has taught me never to go against the Cardinals. I think the Reds could surprise a few people, and take either the division or a WC spot, but it feels like too many things need to happen for that to occur.

NL West
1. Los Angeles Dodgers
2. San Diego Padres*
3. San Francisco Giants
4. Colorado Rockies
5. Arizona Diamondbacks

There's four to six teams that, without a doubt, everyone agrees will be awful this year. The D'Backs are one of those teams. I see that everyone has predicted this division in the same way, and I think that's because of a hesitance to put the Padres first.

Even from a ~homer perspective~ I think the Mariners have the best chance because the A's are rebuilding, the Rangers are a tire fire, the Astros are the Astros, and it becomes an arms race to the top against the Angels.

The hardest team for me to figure out (atm) is the Reds. They look like a really bad team on paper to me. An outfield of 37 year old Marlon Byrd, a center fielder who can't get on base, and possibly lost at the plate/not good anymore Jay Bruce.

Walking into the infield you have a no bat shortstop, and a past his prime Brandon Phillips. I think you're hoping that Votto, Frazier, and Mesoraco provide above average offense.

The rotation seems like an even bigger disaster past Cueto.

I see them honest losing 85-90 games.

I wrote that I wouldn't be surprised to see them at the top of the division, but I think that's only in a "everything goes right" situation where Phillips has one last gasp before he completely erodes, Homer Bailey builds on the two years before last year, Byrd continues to defy, Bruce shows that last season was an awful aberration, Joey Votto is healthy, and the bottom of their rotation is not a complete poo poo show. Like you, I don't know how to figure them at this point, and while I say that I wouldn't be surprised, I also wouldn't bet on many of these things to happen.

In short, I think they are probably the team with the largest variation in terms of how their season will end up.

Revelry in the Dark

My picks, slightly homerish

AL East
1) Jays
2) Yankees*
3) Orioles
4) Red Sox
5) Rays

I think people are overrating the crap out of the Sox considering their rotation is mediocre at best and they went with comedy option Hanley Ramirez in left field. I think this year is the year Toronto holds it together despite losing Stroman. I also think the Yanks are going to do well because I think this is the year Pineda stays healthy and Eovaldi takes it up a notch. Really hard to predict though,

AL Central
1) Indians
2) White Sox
3) Tigers
4) Royals
5) Twins

This will probably be the most competitive division in baseball, as Chicago got their crap together and Cleveland is on the rise. Obviously, KC is still a player in the division race. I think Detroit takes a step back this year due to their old lineup and dumpster fire + kerosene bullpen. Rotation isn't as strong as it used to be either.

AL West
1) Angels
2) Mariners**
3) A's
4) Rangers
5) Astros

This one will probably be a two horse race all year with the Mariners and Angels both being good. Oakland will probably still be competitive but not enough to grab a wild card. Rangers, even if healthy aren't as good as they were in years past.

NL East
1) Nationals
2) Marlins*
3) Mets
4) Braves
5) Phillies

This is probably the easiest call in the world, given Washington is probably the clear cut favorite to win the title. I think Miami takes the next step given their young core is so good. Mets are on the rise but likely won't make the come up until next year at the earliest. Braves and Phillies are both rebuilding, but I believe one more than the other.

NL Central
1) Pirates
2) Cardinals
3) Cubs
4) Brewers
5) Reds

This is another tough call, given that St. Louis and Pittsburgh are roughly even in talent. It could be either or at the end of the year. Cubs will be in it all year but ultimately fall off. Brewers are a wild card since there's a lot of different ways their team can go, but the Reds look pretty weak beyond their All-Stars.

NL West
1) Dodgers
2) Padres**
3) Giants
4) Rockies
5) Dbacks

I'm all in on the Padres man. But the Dodgers are the Dodgers and this is an odd year. Rockies are probably going to finally rebuild and the Dbacks are gonna grit their way to 90+ losses.

Then Upton will leave and they'll lay low to weather another season of Even Year Bullshit and make their next move in 2017.

AL West:

Tigers bullpen blows it, Astros advance. A's beat Indians, Orioles beat Astros. Orioles beat A's. Lots of bad sportswriting about how Moneyball doesn't work in playoffs.

NL East:
Nationals
Marlins
Mets
Braves
Phillies

NL Central:
Cardinals
Pirates
Brewers
Reds
Cubs

NL West:
Padres
Giants

Marlins beat Pirates. Marlins beat Cardinals. Nationals beat Padres. Matt Williams benches Bryce Harper for some stupid reason and Marlins advance to WS. Marlins begin fire sale during World Series and lose in 7 to Orioles. Dan Duquette gets 35 year contract extension. Marlins Man commits seppuku.

Just gonna say that the optimism for the Os (or the pessimism for the rest of the AL east to be more accurate) means the Os as hosed.

Hope I'm wrong :unsmith:

Aw hunny, these came out GREAT!
Lotta MVP picks for Trout despite him being found out as a guy that couldn't hit anything up in the strike zone to save his life
