A boy and his dog.

Nijena Cronwier

Enthusiastic gong player, career alcoholic with a divine mandate for the position, and as a result occasional fencer, Nijena is the daughter of an artist and his muse.

-This is a pretty exclusive and hot spot. How’d you get in?
Don't you know what I am?
-What’s your theme song?
Usually
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nAyeho4TpI8 and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZitk1o19pA, but when https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZhwhd4yJW8, then https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMUDVMiITOU, and sometimes afterwards also https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HkMNOlYcpHg. Except if there are evil outsiders around, in which case, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JzL4h1qveLU. Very few things get Nijena to act serious, but when those happen, she gets serious the way only Aasimar can.

-What are your hobbies?
The above is technically a hobby since I don't get paid for it, but other than that? Soufflés.
-What is the function of government in a well organized state?
To enforce the right of each individual to express and enjoy themselves unobstructed as long as their activities do not intrude on the rights of others, as well as to help individuals meet their basic needs so that they might focus on higher pursuits.
-What is best in life?
Fine wine, good food, better company, good music. Divine beauty is everywhere, if only more people would look for it.

Word of the firing of an entire division of the Weights and Loads commission hasn't gotten around yet. Socks just walked in, and the tavern keeper was happy to have him just in case something went sideways.

Sometimes, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YtksJEj2Keg, othertimes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Evc3Xtc84N0, night times https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uY3LAFJbKyY, and dawn https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kIBeYoP9Wi0.

Architectural sketching. Socks can get so caught up analyzing a buttress that the wall could fall on his head. Luckily there's not much in the way of neo gothic buttresses in this part of the city.

Government exists to protect secrets which must not be known, and to sponsor research which must be completed.

Winning.

Okay, we're one scene in and I am loving what I'm seeing, in all its "stuff you write in high school" glory. Especially the little touches, you'll probably be pleased to know that "Piers Goodkind" did not go unnoticed. If you don't mind having a running commentary reel here in the OOC thread, I'm curious as to whether his ignoble death indicates that the homage is ironic, or if, like most of us back when we were dumb teenagers, you were a genuine fan of Xanth and Sword of Truth.

Well, it's not the poor they want to give money to. They're hoping for sick kids, kindly old grandmothers who got conned by, well, by more evil versions of Tristan, homeless puppies. Y'know, the photogenic (so to speak) poor people. Tristan's just giving the money to any old loser who can't feed his family! The fiend! Also thieves are explicitly taking a cut unlike real charities that secretly take their cuts.

But yes I was not super clear about that.

EDIT: Also yes I will confirm that Tristan's fake charities include the "Victims of Tristan Pierrot Restitution Fund."

Beautiful. Gotta say I'm a huge fan of "Lord Wolfe of the Wall's Street" too.

Anyway, since I actually got in I figure it's a good idea to hash out some of those rules questions before they become relevant. Most of these are the kind of thing that when you google them you get five threads with the same "does this work like this" question immediately followed by an equal amount of "yes, of course it does" and "no, of course it doesn't."

Firstly, the tekko-kagi. The description reads:

quote:

Also known as the iron claw, this device consists of a fanlike structure of five 10-inch blades secured to a sturdy handle strapped to the forearm of the off-hand.

Benefit: A tekko-kagi can be used an offensive weapon, defensively like a buckler, or to disarm an opponent’s weapon without provoking an attack of opportunity. It provides its owner with a +2 circumstance bonus on attempts to disarm or sunder swords or other slender-bladed weapons.

The first question of what it means to use it "defensively like a buckler," especially since Brawlers are proficient with close weapons like the tekko-kagi but not with shields. My current interpretation is that it doesn't have an ACP but gives you a +1 shield bonus to AC on turns when you don't use it for attacks or combat maneuvers, but you could rule that it works exactly like a buckler, meaning it has an ACP and gives a Brawler using it defensively the nonproficiency penalty.

The second isn't so much a matter of interpretation as it is me asking to bend the rules for my amusement. The Disarm rules specify that "If you successfully disarm your opponent without using a weapon, you may automatically pick up the item dropped." I'm wondering if you'll let me do that when I use the tekko-kagi, assuming I have both hands free. It kind of makes sense since the claws aren't that long anyway and you'd almost definitely need to use your other hand, but mostly a "steal your weapon" check at +13 is just all kinds of hilarious.

I was also a bit confused as to whether the +2 cirumstance bonus is instead of or in addition to the normal bonus from the Disarm property, but considering the circumstance bonus applies to both Disarm and Sunder but the weapon only has the Disarm property, I'd have to assume it's in addition.

My third and final question is regarding Dragon Style, a style feat I'm probably going to be Martial Flexibility-ing into quite a bit. Specifically, how it interacts with Power Attack. The feat reads:

quote:

You call upon the spirit of dragonkind, gaining greater resilience, mobility, and fierceness from the blessing of these great beings.

Prerequisites: Str 15, Improved Unarmed Strike, Acrobatics 3 ranks.

Benefit: While using this style, you gain a +2 bonus on saving throws against sleep effects, paralysis effects, and stunning effects. You ignore difficult terrain when you charge, run, or withdraw. You can also charge through squares that contain allies. Further, you can add 1-1/2 times your Strength bonus on the damage roll for your first unarmed strike on a given round.

Normal: You cannot charge or run through difficult terrain, and you cannot charge through a square that contains an ally. With an unarmed strike, you usually add your Strength bonus on damage rolls.

Normally Brawler/Monk unarmed attacks count as non-offhand one-handed attacks and get the normal -1/+2 effect from PA. The question is whether or not Dragon Style makes that one attack qualify as "a primary natural weapon that adds 1-1/2 times your Strength modifier on damage rolls" and thus for the -1/+3 PA. The FAQ maybe sorta kinda supports this interpretation. I'm mostly invested in the question because that one point of damage is just enough to let me fruitfully sunder certan sturdier weapons.

I'd rule that because it says "like a buckler" and not "as a buckler" you wouldn't take the ACP or nonproficiency penalty.

I dig it. Under the Dragon Style, it sounds like a "non-offhand primary natural attack which is adding 1-1/2 time your Str mod to damage rolls" to me. Sunder away!

Sure, running commentary is fun!

I loved the Incarnations of Immortality series back then, and thought that "Wizard's First Rule: People are Stupid" was the cleverest thing back when I was young, even if the rest of the book was a big rip off of Robert Jordan. I never actually read Xanth, because a lot of the titles alone would have gotten the books yanked out of my hands at Catholic school. I reread some of the Sword of Truth stuff a few years back and, well... They did not hold up, to put it mildly. The Incarnations of Immortality were a bit more salvageable in terms of overall concept and idea, but they were still written by Piers Antony, and are unfortunately chockful of his ideas about women and how they ought to act. I got the good stuff out of it at an age where some of the more horrifying implications went over my head, but that field is long harvested and has gone fallow, so to speak.

The man's something of a rite of passage for young fantasy fans, a shared shame that links us together.

Speaking of, I'll be attempting to match you a bit, using ideas I would have liked in high school, tempered significantly by my present sensibilities (or lack thereof). It's an interesting writing challenge, though perhaps not as much as it would be for most, seeing as basically the only thing that's changed about me since high school is I stopped liking Naruto and Bleach. :negative:

Personally, I didn't have any sufficiently nerdy friends to lead me to the popular trash, so I ended up scouring the back of the library for obscure trash instead. I ended up reading a lot of weird comics and trashy fantasy romance. My favourite book throughout middle school was The Last Dragonlord, the story of a tortured half-dragon who finally finds his True Soulmate (literally; she has the other halves of his two split souls) after 600 years but he can't be with her yet because that would force her to Awaken Her Powers and he must Restrain Himself but it's so tempting and he Does It Anyway because he is So In Love. Think I mostly transitioned into comics and anime by High School though. It was around that time I was completely obsessed with lovely webcomics, too. Was a bit of lurch when years later I realized that Jack is not, in fact, an edgy masterpiece but a bizarre furry fetish comic.

Naruto and Bleach
Man, I'm still hosed off about Naruto. It had such a sweet mythology going with living weapons of mass destruction, child soldiers, secret ninja wars, creepy magic biotech organ theft and political intrigue but Kishimoto insisted on wasting all that potential on boring characters and tired "friends are important~" morals.

I actually kinda like Bleach. It's overstayed its welcome for sure, but listening to people rattle off cool-sounding phrases in Japanese and blow up entire mountainsides still makes me all tingly on the inside.

What I remember most about Xanth was some book where the girl character had acne and some guy in fantasyland called them "beauty marks" and that made me laugh, as I had acne and no one anywhere ever though pimples were anything other than disgusting.

So I guess thanks for that one bitter laugh, Anthony. Other than the dumb puns those books were such terrible things.

(Naruto and Bleach chat.)

The problem with Naruto and Bleach was the same for me. They made the supporting cast far more interesting than the central characters, and then completely ignored them or only brought them in to get their asses kicked or otherwise relegated them to the periphery for much of the series beyond the Chunin Exam/Soul Society arcs (which were the best arcs of each series). Seriously, Naruto/Sasuke and Ichigo are the most boring drat characters.

By the way, not to be That Guy, but Anias' custom race looks just a little bit crazy overpowered. I was wondering if the rest of us could snag some RP worth of buffs for our own characters (the primary seven races, Humans included, are all 0 RP, Aasimar are 3 RP but I don't know about the specific subrace currently in the party, and Mogogol aren't listed but they look like a 0-RP race)

15 RP is considered an Advanced Race, in fact, with 0-3 being the range of PC-recommended races.

I see where you're coing from, but that link clearly lists humans at 9 RP and aasimar at 15. Are you just looking at the cost for their type?

EDIT: also a big fat 'yes' to all the points about anime, with the caveat that as dull as Ichigo is, unlike the naruto protags he's at least not actively annoying.

Know what, I was reading the boxes wrong, thanks. Still, I think we might each enjoy at least an Advanced attribute trait and a couple extra perks.

Yeah I just threw it together to be airthemed aasamir (Which are 15 RP outsiders). You should be a lyral and we can all live in fear of Ankhegs together.

I agree that most of the interesting bits of shonen anime are the side-cast. I think it's part of the genre forever now though. It's much easier to allude to 'really awesome side character' than actually write a consistently awesome character.

Edit. 2x alas.

I'd say you did a bit more than lightly reskin Aasimar, given that, on cursory inspection, the Lyral are charop'd pretty heavily, particularly compared to the Aasimar. As you demonstrated, it's much more efficient to take Focused Study than to take two separate Skill Bonus traits, and that Advanced array sure is sweet. Where the Aasimar squandered several RP, you didn't let a single one go wasted. Not that I particularly mind you cheesing the system, this is a campaign based on 2e D&D, it's to be expected, encouraged. I'd just like for everyone to get that chance (in Nijena's case, Waci should at least get the chance to better optimize the Aasimar's racial traits).

Hey, I don't tell people how to charop, I just believe in the right of every person to cheese the hell out of whatever aspect of the system they want. Hell, my character is based entirely around being absurdly good at disguises, not exactly a power option. But, given the option, I will absolutely optimize further for more imposter prowess.

To wit, here is what Tristan would look like with a customized racial profile using 15 RP: Link.

True. If we can keep our races for the purpose of feat requirements and such, I suppose it would be nice to be able to fiddle a bit with some of the racial options.

Yeah, why not? Punch your races up to 15 RP to keep things even, if you feel so inclined.

I loved me some Bleach and Naruto back in grad school. They were great for turning my mind off and focusing on the sheer oddness of the situations, Bleach especially, since the sheer load of characters to keep track of get grew and grew and grew. I've still got up to the Bount arc on DVD, which is when I graduated, moved out, and was suddenly very poor. Back in high school, it was all Gundam Wing, Tenchi Muyo, Ah! My Goddess, and Neon Genesis Evangelion.

I agree that it's much easier to write interesting side characters. The main character has to be just bland enough that they can stand in for you, the reader, when it comes to the target audience of 14 year old Japanese boys, and a lot of the side characters are weird enough that they couldn't actually sustain their own stories for too long without becoming really niche. But by having enough of these side characters included, you can rope in the fans who love dogs/go/flower arranging/large breasts/cooking/motorcycles/gymnastics/etc. and keep them as an audience because they're reading for their favorite side character, and will endure the chapters that that character doesn't appear in because they'll probably be in the next one. Harem stories have perfected this by subbing out all the friends and rivals for the different types of girls 14 year old Japanese boys are likely to be attracted to, rather than the older style love triangles or one off appearances. You keep all the characters in the background, you keep your audience.

I didn't randomly charop the race building. I googled for a native outsider air, didn't find one, then took an aasamir and tore out things and added things in until it fit. I avoided a couple of things which I suppose isn't obvious when you look at the finished product, but trust me the charop air outsider is not a lyral. I don't really have much reason to lie about elfgames, and I'm perfectly capable of charop. The paizo suggestion was just 'get a fly speed' which costs 4 RP, and is probably more powerful than anything I did, and turning down 3rd level spell like abilities for envoy protector isn't the path of true power either.

I really like the idea of a race of people who's skin evaporates to mist and reforms t1000 style to avoid getting acid on it and who you can mortally offend by offering orange juice.

Anyways, I am pretty indifferent so if you want to have a sparkly unicorn or something to make things fair, by all means, I like having unicorns on the team they can heal and stuff. Need more posts in the game thread, less posts in here being That Guy.

Hey, I'm not here to start a fight, just pointing out that the Lyral could kick the rear end of any (unmodified) Aasimar, all else being equal, unless the latter packed a boatload of acid damage. Not trying to accuse you of lying or anything, I would and did do essentially the same thing with my own character, sorry if I came off a little harsh. Anyway, as you can see, I've already got a modded version of my own character, which I'm sort of flavoring as a kind of result of Tristan becoming as much myth as man through his exploits, empowered by his own growing legend. This campaign may not be quite Planescape, but Planescape owned and I've always wanted to make a dude who uses some of its elements, such as the power of belief.

Actually, I think I may play Planescape: Torment again, come to think of it...

As for anime chat, my glorious Nipponese cartoon of choice is One Piece, which manages to just have awesome characters all over, and rather than focus on the main character's perspective, it both uses much more of an ensemble focus most of the time, and will frequently use Luffy as a plot device instead of as a character, focusing more on everyone else's reactions to this crazy aspiring Pirate King. Also the story is just consistently excellent, something I can't really say for the other two of what was until last year Shonen Jump's holy trinity of action series. For other stuff, it's mostly stuff that was on Toonami/Adult Swim* and/or giant robots, with a handful of exceptions here and there. Been meaning to get into JoJo's Bizarre Adventure.

*Ironically, I never did see Cowboy Bebop or Trigun, the two most popular of AS' early offerings.

EDIT: Oh man if referring to the Tieflings as "Thieflings" was, like, an intentional racist dig by Nijena, that, that is just the best.

Well, if you check the page from the SRD site I linked a few posts up, and pick some additional traits until you're at 15 RP, you'll be all set. I already did the calculations for you, and while a couple traits don't perfectly fit with the big list, my estimate is that Small Mogogols are already at 11 points* (Medium Mogogols would be at 8 due to the lack of Skilled Climber). That being the case, my personal recommendation would be upgrading your racial stat bonuses from Standard to Advanced, but there's a ton of other options for whatever kind of flavor you're going for. Two points can even get you a second, different, tongue attack (Sticky Tongue). Treat it like feat selection, though you can only select, at most, two traits from the Skill and Feat Traits section, and no more than three from the Offense, Movement, or Other Traits sections, because your existing racial traits already take up some slots in those areas. This is kinda fun, I certainly haven't ever used the race creation rules before, but it's a surprisingly simple system, overall.

*I priced Skilled Jumper at 4, as it's very similar to Water Child (+4 skill bonus, plus an additional miscellaneous bonus to uses of that skill), and Skilled Climber at 3 (Just a +4 with no secondary benefit). I priced Grasping Tongue at 2, as it's very similar to Sticky Tongue, a two-point trait. Hold Breath and Marsh Walk are both taken from the race creation RAW.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure.
JoJo is pretty great, except it has a critical flaw in being really, really creepy about female characters. They serve almost exclusively as plot points for male protagonists and invariably end up violated, often sexually. I get that the whole thing is supposed to be weird and transgressive but I still had a hard time stomaching the scene in which a naked 12-year-old almost gets raped by an orangutan.

Yeah, I wish I was making that up.

If you're looking for something that's fighty and disturbing in more interesting ways, I heartily recommend Hunter x Hunter (2011). I reluctantly picked it up because I was going through Bleach withdrawal and wanted more shouty superpowers. I didn't really get that, but it ended up being one of the best series I've ever seen. A wee bit slow at times, but the production values are through the roof, characters are universally likeable and/or interesting and it manages to keep the drama alive by shunning the lazy conventions of random powerups and "oh no turns out he's only mostly died." It's actually very refreshing to see named characters in serious trouble, ask yourself "oh my, how are they going to get out of this one?" and find that the answer is "they aren't."

Oh, and by the way. Anias, based on your spells prepared it looks like you're planning to do some Enlarge Person + Gravity Bow shenanigans. If that's the case, I have to inform you that it doesn't work. Enlarge Person can't target Outsiders and even if it could the spell explicitly states it doesn't affect ranged weapons.

Certainly, but the real bottleneck is actually just doing enough damage. I already have +12 to Sunder, but as far as I can tell there's no character option available at lvl 3 that lets you do more damage to objects or ignore hardness, and nothing at all that isn't tied to a specific class or archetype. I've had to resort to just pumping up my damage, which may have the awkward side effect of letting me kill enemies faster than I can break their stuff :v:

EDIT: Speak of the devil, I just found a trait that lets me add +1 damage to unarmed attacks. I hope nobody minds if I switch out one of mine for that one.

I just, what? You got me, I totally want to enlarge myself round one, then gravity bow round two, to shoot a really big arrow round three. That is my masterful plan. (It is not a good plan, nor is it my plan)

I'm taking enlarge person for sunderman you doofus. I just assume front line types enjoy being big.

Think of my guy as a backliner/skirmisher and there you go. I want to scroll blade someone, but if playing pathfinder has taught me anything it's that sometimes you want to do something and it falls on it's face because pathfinder. Since I have no idea if scrollblading people is going to work out or not, I hedged my bets to avoid being 'That Guy we drag around who is useless in combat' by taking bow feats and buffs. Worst case I turn out to be either an arcane archer or eldritch knight and oh well. Best case I get to shank people with scrolls of cure moderate wounds and continual flame, then heal the party or make a torch to sell and try not to bleed too much money on scroll scribing->stabing->selling.

I am fully aware of how my dude works and I solemnly swear I have no real interest in breaking a pathfinder game nor is this how I would go about it.

Hey, I didn't think it was a good idea either but it seemed like the sort of thing a person might do. And I'd rather accuse people of poor system mastery now than watch them cry betrayed tears when they realize they won't get to spend three turns to maybe shoot a bad guy for 6d6+6 damage.
