McAlister posted:I would argue that what distinguishes Authoritarians isn't that they do this, it's that they get out of their depth more easily than other people do and thus resort to this behavior in situations that most people would not consider extreme enough to warrant it. Altemeyer (kind of) mentions this in his book. Most people are pretty much ready to become right-wing authoritarians in a serious crisis.
