Last Christmas is the greatest Christmas song of all time and I will knife fight anyone who says different. axleblaze posted:And this isn't one I can really explain why it pains me so, but it just makes me sad I am an unrepentant fallout boy fan and that is a terrible song from the contractual obligation/decline period. A lot of American ska bands covering eighties pop songs always have this really annoying "we're so much better than this song" smirkiness about them. It's like contemporary indie bands doing interchangeable acoustic covers of current pop songs in the Radio 1 Live Lounge that make the NME gush.

I would like to contribute something a little different - a song that's so good it's virtually impossible to do a cover that's not enjoyable (even if it's not as good as the original Cameo version). Cameo - Word Up. The Boss Hoss Gun Korn Mel B There's loads more. There are some pretty terrible wannabe solo guitarist covers on YouTube, but I'm just taking about released versions. Edit: OK, Mel B is pretty is awful. EvilGenius fucked around with this message at 09:31 on Jul 30, 2016 |

I love Johnny Cash, but his cover of Springsteen's JOHNNY 99 is questionable at best. For those who haven't heard it, Springsteen's version is more despairing and stark (As is that whole album). You can hear it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OAjhHbtZyQU But then, I have no idea what Cash was doing. It's weirdly upbeat in a way that doesn't fit the song, and Cash manages to sound bored by it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Six2YfyX-rU

Pretty much any Iron Maiden song that doesn't go in a completely different direction is going to be a worst cover. Nobody else in metal has Bruce Dickinson's voice.

Wow. 5/6 of those aren't even metal singers, and while I remember Halford killing Diamonds and Rust, I still don't think he has the precision and control of Dickinson. I have to shamefully admit that I have barely listened to Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, or Candlemas in about five years, though, so my memory might be fuzzy. I never listened to Mercyful Fate, Jag Paneer, or whatever Tim Baker was in. I'll modify my statement to say that I haven't ever heard a Maiden cover that I liked except Sculptured's cover of the song Iron Maiden. That would probably receive mixed reviews if I could still find it online anywhere. E: Wheat loaf, I get you were joking, I'm just amazed. Like Jethro Tull winning the metal album Grammy amazed. 22 Eargesplitten fucked around with this message at 20:41 on Sep 9, 2016 |

I blame my phone for that one. Jag Paneer sounds like it would taste p. good, though. I think I listened to that Grandma song, I don't remember whether that's a solo King Diamond song or a Mercyful Fate song. I didn't like it, never listened to anything else. I haven't ever heard Cirith Ungol, so I guess I'm a bad person.

It's obviously nowhere near the Walkers' version, but I don't find it offensive. More an interesting arrangement that just didn't entirely work.
