No, I thought the text dumps were horrible and having come from BG1 and 2 the combat was beyond awful, also the pacing was horrendous and the side quests just as tedious as BG1 which I didn't want to resuffer all over again, and a lot of the writing was incredibly loving overwrought and hammy. It always owns me when people post screenshots of how GOOD the writing in the sensory stones was but Jesus Christ they're literally one of the biggest examples of incredibly loving gay writing in videogames, absolutely LITTERED with WRITING random WORDS in CAPS for EMPHASIS like they couldn't make it cheesy enough.

Go d that game was some poopoo.

As usual the best spell in the game is some dumb level 1 spell that makes everyone who stands in it fall down constantly for like 3 years and you can have two guys spamming it while your other guys just shoot the guys who cant stand up with guns.

I tried to like Baldur's gate back in the day but the combat system was so poo poo I could never warm to it. Why can't they just have hex based & turn based combat instead of the crappy real time with pauses poo poo?

RPGs back then were in a transitionary period, RPGs had pretty much floundered out in the mid 90s despite being super popular in the late 80s, so developers were trying new ways to make them appealing. Fallout had stuff like an unusual setting and tried to introduce more actual roleplaying, as a lot of older RPGs were just glorified dungeon crawls or exploratory adventure games, and BG was supposed to be like an epic adventure people always wanted RPGs to be but didn't have the technological progress to create.
A lot of that was also approaching the combat, Fallout had its targeting system, firing modes, stuff like people sliding across the room, friendly fire, etc. basically an attempt to make a more realistic, grounded version of RPG combat. Baldur's Gate, I think, they were trying to translate D&D combat into a more accessible model, as the problem with a lot of the Gold Box games is that they were fairly dense, overly difficult at times, and obtuse as hell and had a lot of pointless rules that didn't work well in the videogame format.
Streamline that, make it easier to control, and you also have the additional benefit of it looking cool and cinematic, making it turn based would likely have gone against their vision for that, strategy games, after all, was one of the most popular genres at the time, notably RTS games, more people would be familiar with that kind of control system and gameplay so it made sense.
The late 90s were a revival period of the roleplaying genre, Diablo, Fallout, Baldur's Gate, all came out very close together and they all did interesting, new, and unique things for the genre and ultimately most RPGs are built off of their innovations. Choice and consequence, combat more borrowed from other genres than being staid RPG convention, more linear, more involved main plots, a huge jump in production values, etc. etc.

I agree though, at the time trying to make a balanced party was cool and fun but by the time I got to Icewind Dale I was sick of the Infinity Engine and how broken and unbalanced it was and how the combat was over long.

I gotta admit, Obsidian has really cornered the market on making retarded grognards who never advanced past 1999 feel really intelligent about themselves, creating an insular community of idiots who will gladly fling untold sums of money at something they will probably play for 15 hours and get bored of, because all tactical RPGs suck the big one. I don't even know why they bothered developing the second half of this game.

The writing is much too dense and I don't care about any of the quest characters I run into because they're all stock fantasy tropes.

If I was 15 and/or unemployed again I would probably love it, but then I don't know how I'd be buying it.
