zundfolge posted:By the sound of it, his isn't any easier to drive smoothly even though it's an automatic. The throttle feels like it goes from closed to halfway open over perhaps a millimeter of pedal travel so to accelerate smoothly from a stop you either have to feather the throttle or give it more than you think you need to avoid giving yourself whiplash. It's one of the few things that annoys me about it but it seems like most cars with electronic throttles are mapped that way so it's not like it's exclusively a Toyota thing. They had major transmission issues and premature clutch burnout too but luckily along with the higher revving engine the xrs gets a better transmission (6 speed) that doesn't suffer the same issues. I'm sure the clutch will burn out sooner than other Toyotas due to the touchiness of the throttle but it doesn't have the major problems the first gens are known for.

The current girlfriend drives a 2000 Buick Regal GS. It's a god drat couch on wheels and I love it on road trips compared to my 3 series BMW. It's been pretty solid too. I don't do the work on it, but she goes to my mechanic and I think she's only ever had one semi-major thing go wrong (I want to say it was a head gasket). I keep on her about changing the oil and rotating tires and that's about it. I did solder on some new resistors to fix the cluster last weekend though. She finally has an odometer again. Last girlfriend had a Volvo 240 wagon. I replaced the cooling system one weekend and told her to take it and get an oil change the next week because it was due, and it needed to be topped off. (And informed her that her car would last past the apocalypse if she just kept fluids in it.) She ignored me, drove it all week. Then drove it 40+ miles down the interstate leaking oil, and 20 miles without oil until the poor thing finally threw a rod outside of the parking lot of an elementary school she had gone to for work.

How is there not one mention of a corolla yet? (matrix counts I guess) Maybe its a regional thing, ex had a corolla and no less than 5 friends and co-workers wive's/SO's all have mid 2000's corolla's. All but one in silver. Such depressing cars.

I drive one when I work for a friend's lab sometimes. I swear all of the power/torque in that car comes in the first 1/2" of travel on the pedal. I took the liberty of jamming the floor mat underneath the accelerator. Drives smoother now.

Girlfriend has a 2007 Scion tC, five speed. I always looked down on tCs but they're not too bad. The 2.4 is torquey enough (for a four-banger) that I can see why they put it in larger vehicles. Burns oil though.

Until January it was a 2003 Volvo s80 turbo. She signed it over to her parents last time we visited because their XC90 died and she now lives on thousands of miles away. I got to drive it whenever we were visiting and I love that luxo-barge. Comfortable as hell with the turning radius of a cargo ship, but it would get down when you needed it to

A Saturn LS with >225000 miles on it. It's been T-boned twice by uninsured people, both of them skipped town before the court date. It's rings are shot, so it goes through maybe a quart of oil a month. But I'm pretty sure this is still the only Saturn to ever make it past 200k miles. I'm trying to save up money to get her an H6 Outback when it finally gives up the ghost, but saving up for a wedding and a car at the same time is not working so well.

Which is part of why I'm looking at the H6 Outback. They never came with a stick in the states. So she gets to drive the slushbox, we get something comfortable for road trips, lots of space, and when I replace my Impreza Outback I can pick something stupid, impractical, and 2-door.

She drives a 2015 Golf. Very nice car with a 5 speed and a wee little turbo. I would drive it but she insisted we needed some kind of truck Previous to that she had a 2003 Jetta which sucked other than the heated seats and reliability. Sold it to my sister with 350000 km on it and it shows no signs of slowing down.

She also wants me to get an automatic when I get my next car, so that when we take my car she can drive if I need her to. That's not going to happen, though. I know automatics have gotten better, but I'm scarred for life by my mother's Mazda MPV's automatic from when I was learning to drive. At highway speeds, you floor it, nothing happens for about three seconds, not even acceleration, then it downshifts.

Manual has actually saved my bacon a couple times. The couple seconds it takes to spin up the clutch is a couple extra seconds I get to look out for hazards and pedestrians. Mine drives a new Corolla that I'm sure she overpaid for. She just walked into a dealer and got it the first time on a Toyota lot. 23k out the door for a Corolla SE. I got an Accord for 24k, so that just sounds all kinds of wrong.

My wife has a 2008 Focus SE. It has almost no character, but somehow manages to be better than whatever economy rental we get when traveling. She has informed me, however, that if I buy a car without heated seats, it's grounds for divorce. I haven't clarified if that's just my DD, or any future project cars also meet this criteria.

wilfredmerriweathr posted:Mine has one too but it's an 03 xrs, so it gets the 2zz high compression motor with top end designed by yamaha and 8500 redline. It's awesome. The only downside (aside from waiting for replacement airbags for the takata BS, the recall notice said they don't have replacements yet and "don't let anyone ride in the passenger seat" ) is that I cannot loving drive the thing smoothly around the city. It must have a super light flywheel and the clutch is basically a on/off switch so I either stall it or smell clutch. I've been driving manual for 15 years but I just can't get it right, I'm too big. 05 matrix xrs here, just picked it up a month ago. Same thoughts here on the clutch and flywheel. It is possible to drive smoothly, but you have to hit it -perfectly-. I hit it right maybe 25% of the time, and I've been dd'ing a manual of some sort for 15 years, personally and for work (commercial truck). Had to load it on my car trailer when I bought it... That was fun. Good to know it's just the way it is. And my wife has a 2012 cr-v. Bought new and will drive it until it becomes the kids car; it's the mid trim level. Did you know the poverty spec cr-v doesn't have front armrests? Yeah gently caress that. angryrobots fucked around with this message at 04:24 on Mar 29, 2015 |

Matrix/Vibes have documented clutch/manual trans problems, I skipped on getting one because of it. I think it's a bearing design flaw or something like that, but it's probably the only car I know of where the automatic is more dependable than the manual.

Yeah the 5-speed is apparently a turd, or at least was. But the 6-speed XRS models are very uncommon and have a completely different drivetrain, which apparently did not have the same problems. The clutch takeup issues are probably partly due to the extremely low torque of those motors and the relatively beefy clutch required for that motors high rpm output.

My wife drive a 2008 Mazda 3 base model. The only option on it is automatic transmission and maybe A/C. Manual locks, manual windows and maybe not even ABS. It is in need of some TLC as in new engine mounts, struts and rear springs. its got about 110,000 miles on it and some cancer is starting to show up on the bottom of the doors. I hope it last a couple more years and I would like to see her get into a nice used lexus.

It not bad and now that the weather is starting to get nice it is on the to do list to see if its something that can be fixed before it gets out of hand. We have had zero issues with the car besides needing wear items replaced. I need to site down and make sure I get the right part numbers for the 2.0 motor mounts and not the 2.3,, I'm not even sure if there is any difference between the mounts for the two motors but I have found two sets of part numbers.
