Like if you legit believe in hell, particularly if you're in one of those 'it doesn't matter if you're a good person, if you don't convert you end up in hell' churches, you're basically saying you believe that eternal torture is a reasonable punishment. You think someone deserves to suffer the worst pain and anguish imaginable for all time, and you just sorta nod to yourself and say amen as your preacher talks about who belongs there before going to sunday brunch with the family. It's a really weird thing that society just sorta accepts, like we'll call people amoral for supporting capital punishment or torture for investigations, there's debate over drone usage and how ethical it is, but here you have people just calmly agreeing that certain people should burn forever and if anything it'd be considered rude to say 'that's hosed up man'. I would go so far as to say not even the most notoriously evil historical figures deserve to be tortured for infinite lifetimes, even one would be too many. What's perhaps even weirder is a lot of these people insist it's a necessary thing to keep people in line, like the only thing stopping them from becoming a mass murderer is the knowledge that they will suffer for their crimes. I'd like to imagine that most people wouldn't want to curb stomp a baby even if there weren't repercussions, but maybe that's putting too much faith in society. What are your thoughts on hell and the people who believe in it? Are our grandmas just metal as gently caress.

I went to one of those southern baptist fire and brimstone sermons with my grandparents like a summer ago, and that day's topic was basically "no matter how good of a house you build, if the foundation isn't jesus you're gonna burn in hell' and the guy was giving examples of people doing good things but "if it's not for jesus it's selfish so you will burn" and all the old people were just nodding and agreeing with him the whole time, even my grandparents who knew I wasn't religious. I basically got owned.

in response to finding out that hell doesn't exist, the greatest country on earth decided to create it According to the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS), 2,266,800 adults were incarcerated in U.S. federal and state prisons, and county jails at year-end 2011 – about 0.94% of adults in the U.S. resident population. Additionally, 4,814,200 adults at year-end 2011 were on probation or on parole.

I basically got owned. when a friend of mines mom died I went to the funeral and it was in one of these churches; the priest or whatever said that her death was a wakeup call for everyone and was a warning that they need to get right with god. this went on for like half an hour. it was one of the most hosed up things I've ever seen

Like don't get me wrong I went through a hating organized religion phase a while ago but dick dorkins taught me that even without religion people will basically fervently support something like zealots anyway so now I don't really care if people believe in god or heaven or whatever. Hell on the other hand seems like something only a really bad person could support the idea of, even the worst person imaginable doesn't deserve to suffer endlessly for their crimes because no matter how severe and bad their crimes were, at some point they had a finite limit. Even if you believe in an eye for an eye there's nothing a person could accomplish in their lifetime that would be as severe as hell as a punishment.

they also believe both that 1) an all powerful being exists and is capable of doing things like creating universes, while at the same time believing 2) that all-powerful being is highly invested what you're doing with your penis

Like if I described in detail what I wanted to happen to currently alive people I thought were bad and it included things like being burned alive, people would probably think I was messed up in the head, but that's basically what everyone who believes in hell think should happen to other people over pretty minor slights.

I’ll make a bet with you. Two guys break into an atheist’s home. He has a little atheist wife and two little atheist daughters. Two guys break into his home and tie him up in a chair and gag him. And then they take his two daughters in front of him and rape both of them and then shoot them and they take his wife and then decapitate her head off in front of him. And then they can look at him and say, "Isn’t it great that I don’t have to worry about being judged? Isn’t it great that there’s nothing wrong with this? There’s no right or wrong, now is it dude?”

if god actively sustains and abets hell he is definitely top tier #1 monster hitler who should be actively opposed and undermined and the "satan = ultimate evil" narrative should be questioned by the faithful given the inherent biases of its Author. hth
