Last Updated 4/18/2015: DS1 Episode 2 is live. Episode 4 commentary is due 5/1/15 at 10pm EST. Follow me on Twitter for updates. Hey. What’s up? Been a long time. How’ve you been? Oh, that’s nice. Do you still like video games? Dead Space is a survival horror series in the same vein as Resident Evil, but in space. So yeah, Space Zombies. Watch the intro video for more information about the origins of the series. Now, I know what you’re saying: “Bob, why LP every single DS game?” Firstly: I can’t believe you remember my name! Secondly: Dead Space is a very interesting series to examine as a whole. The first game is considered classic among traditional survival horror fans, while the second game is considered a drat good game by basically everyone. They’re essentially the Alien and Aliens of videogames. The core of the series is solid despite some wonky inconsistencies, but it seems like EA wanted to test that core by doing several weird expanded universe games, comics, books, and movies that are just adorable. In this LP, we’re going to play, watch and read all of them. Yes, all of them. And we’re going to do it together. The commentary of this LP will be subtitled, but I won’t be the only one commenting. This time around, everyone - that includes you, dear reader - can join in on the commentary fun. Here's the Google Doc on how it all works. Please note that if you do not wish to be spoiled on episodes of the LP, do not look at that Google Doc since it will contain links to episodes of the LP that have no commentary. With all that said, let’s get this spaceshow on the spaceroad. Just be careful not to post spoilers in this thread until after the commentary episode with those spoilers goes live please! Here's an automatically updated playlist of every video in this LP Let’s Play Dead Space - Primer Let’s Play Dead Space - Intro Let’s Play Dead Space - Part 1 - Alone in the Clarke Let’s Play Dead Space - Part 2 - Garth Marenghi's Clarkeplace Art by SuperGraffiti Kamoc fucked around with this message at 17:57 on Apr 27, 2015 |

Can't wait to see how much this experiment pans out. I always liked Dead Space for its action and gameplay, but found its horror element unremarkable. Really glad you're doing another LP, Bob!

Never played a Dead Space game, don't know nothing about it apart from the stuff I had to learn to draw. This is gon' be a hoot!

I see a Move controller in the banner image. Does that mean you are also doing DS: Extraction?

He's drawing stuff for future videos (mostly the thumbnails), so expect more of his great art soon! (Also if you really like his art you should consider hiring him to draw stuff for you!) Blind Sally posted:I see a Move controller in the banner image. Does that mean you are also doing DS: Extraction? Yup, we're covering every piece of Dead Space media (except No Known Survivors because I can't find it anywhere - even talked to the people who made it originally but they couldn't get me a copy). Played Extraction on the Wii first but the quality was so poor I switched to the PS3 version with the Move controller.

(I had to look up No Known Survivors, because I had no idea what it was. That's a bummer that you couldn't find it).

I've always wanted to comment on a Let's Play! And oh god, I kept reading "DS games" and almost lost my mind thinking about that. Imagine dismembering everything with a stylus.

Also, how the hell are you playing so well with the M+K controls? When I played it, the mouse acceleration made the game almost unplayable for me. Really glad they fixed the issue with DS2.

Is it just me, or does the "Objective Complete" sound really sound similar to the first couple chimes of the Windows 95 Startup sound?

This kinda reminds me of back when people put used to put their LP videos on Viddler and the video player would pop up people's comments over the videos. But with higher quality comments of course.

First episode seems to be pretty good proof of concept. Hopefully the quality remains throughout! Keep it up, Bob!

I've always wondered if I was the only one that saw it as "Objective Rodeo". So confusing...

Has there ever been a reason stated why Isaac doesn't talk? He has too much as a character to be an audience surrogate, and all the times where he's just silent just gets silly.

Every time he tries to say something in Dead Space 1, he gets cut off in a comical way by either his teammates or a necromorph. The gag got old with the first game, so he talks in all the sequels.

Dead Space is great, but extraction was an under appreciated classic I think. Probably because it was a light gun game. Probably the better of the plots for the Dead Space games. This thread is amazing by the way. Looking forward to being here in a year's time. Lonos Oboe fucked around with this message at 14:44 on Mar 31, 2015 |

Lazy Gun posted:I've always wondered if I was the only one that saw it as "Objective Rodeo". So confusing... Since the first minute of the first time I played Dead Space 1, I've read it as "Objective Rodeo." I even asked my boyfriend at the time, "What the gently caress does Objective Rodeo mean??" and he was like "It's ADDED." and only then I was able to see that the A's looked like R's and the O's looked like D's in this lovely font that they never change throughout the whole series. I played Dead Space 1 to 3 still unable to read it as anything but Objective Rodeo unless I try hard. It's like trying to unsee the Fedex arrow for me or something, it's just what I see first. Legit can't believe they chose that font in the first place and saw nothing wrong with it, let alone using it for three entire games.

DialTheDude posted:Also, how the hell are you playing so well with the M+K controls? When I played it, the mouse acceleration made the game almost unplayable for me. Really glad they fixed the issue with DS2. Yeah, that was a bit of an ordeal to fix. The mouse sensitivity being incredibly high is a common issue with DS1PC - especially if you want to play at 60fps (which I'm recording at and hopefully everyone can see - there's a 1080p 60fps option available on YouTube for these videos). Playing at that high framerate caused all sorts of wacky nonsense to happen during playthroughs (like this), and is likely the cause for the high mouse sensitivity. To fix it (at least for me and my PC with an Nvidia graphics card), disabling V-sync and reenabling it directly through the graphics card made it a lot easier to work with. There's still some wackiness going on, as you can see in the videos when I switch between walking around mode and firing mode - the firing mode mouse sensitivity is really low but allows for good accuracy, while the walking mode mouse sensitivity is really high and causes occasional jerky movements. It's pretty annoying but I got used to it quickly. Lonos Oboe posted:Dead Space is great, but extraction was an under appreciated classic I think. Probably because it was a light gun game. Probably the better of the plots for the Dead Space games. I am legitimately excited to show off Extraction because it's one of the better Dead Space games, yet not a lot of people know about it. I'm also a huge sucker for light gun games and bought this beauty to play it with. Did a test run a while ago and oh man, it's so fun.

This is a really ambitious project, and in the hands of any other LPer I'd be skeptical. But you always put a lot of effort into engaging viewers so I'm really excited for this. I never played any Dead Space games but the intro video has me thinking of checking it out!

This LP is definitely an interesting idea and I'm looking forward to seeing it pan out! I also like the doodles in the op edit: Also thirding Objective Rodeo, although I choose to believe that's what it actually says and Dead Space is a much more rootin tootin game than it initially leads on. I'm not sure how I feel about giving Dead Space the respect of a silent LP. On one hand the game does a really good job making fun of itself, but it really isn't good enough a horror game to deserve the silence.

Taking a break from acknowledging how amazing this thread's title is and wishing that there were more rodeos to be had, this is maybe the most common criticism of Dead Space that I see whenever the games are discussed, that they're not very scary, but I guess I'm the odd one in that I don't really feel this is a huge flaw. I dunno, I could just be a huge plebeian but I enjoy the whole rickety ghost ship aesthetic and ugly body horror monsters and FRANTIC VIOLIN STINGS thing in a Halloween haunted house sort of way. Like, Resident Evil 4 isn't a scary game either despite being full of monsters and not!zombies and chainsaw murderers but it's still great fun shooting Ganados in the knees before power kicking them to death and I feel the same way about Dead Space.

I think in an old RP, Ironicus said they aren't "horror" games so much as "thriller" games and I think that's right in the money.

That's a much better and much more succinct way of putting what I was trying to get at, thanks. Like, I've never played a Dead Space game and been and felt as disturbed and anxious as I was playing, say, Silent Hill 2 which I'll call a genuine horror game, but I don't think that's what they're really going for.

Dead Space 1 is basically Resident Evil 4 Except In Space (minus the escort quest) gameplay-wise, so I feel that is a pretty accurate comparison all-around.

Dead Space has an egregious lack of murderous Spanish midgets, also Issac's hair isn't as fabulous as Leon's. Someone should make a mod that replaces the store with the RE4 item guy though, that'd be pretty rad.

I did a subtitled commentary LP of Silent Hill: Homecoming, which is worse than all Dead Space games in every way (with the exception of Ignition, yikes). I don't think doing subbed commentary is about respect as much as letting a game speak for itself. If it's good, silent commentary just allows that to come through better. Same if it's bad.

Also worth noting that the silent commentary so far has been a bunch of people riffing on the game so, y'know, we're not being too respectful here.
