McCarthy has a unusual skillset as a performer. She's not great at telling jokes (though the insults and threats in this movie are hilarious) she's really good at slipping into characters and absolutely committing to them. There was an SNL sketch where she's in a focus group testing mayonnaise or salad dressing or something, and she turns a simple gag into the most convincing, depressing character ever as she desperately chases approval and recognition.
But yeah, Spy owned, and actually works really well as a commentary on the casting of women in films, especially action films.

This'd make a great double feature with Kingsman. Both self aware, affectionate parodies/love letters with shitloads of graphic violence and sex jokes.

Melissa McCarthy works because her characters are hyper-competent or really sexually aggressive, and are played by a heavy girl who is completely unaware of the face that she's heavy. The best part of The Heat was how she's constantly getting hit on, and is just annoyed by it.

I think the best running gag was that none of the gorgeous people in the movie are assholes. They tend to be arbitrarily assholes in these sorts of movies. Instead, they're just oblivious to what life's like for people who haven't won the genetic lottery.

How does anyone think this :psyduck:

McCarthy is a great actress and has owned every role I've seen her in.

Counterpoint: Mike and Molly is the blandest poo poo you could ever watch. It's enjoyable, but my god. If that's all you'd seen of McCarthy, I could absolutely understand someone's reluctance

The dick pics were funny, but it does make me wonder why more movies don't have any male nudity. I mean if Spy can get away with it why do we have films like 50 shades of gray showing naked women but zero dicks?

I lived with a guy at uni who used to insist that the reason there's so little male nudity is purely because women don't want to see naked men. He cited the fact that women don't buy pornography (they do, 30% of purchasers are women) but there's an attitude out there that male nudity is fundamentally undesirable.

One of the GTA games, games filled with death and violence on a staggering scale, received a harsher rating than the others in the series because it had a dick for one shot.
