The Australian Democrats

The Australian Democrats are a pro-capitalist, right-wing, socially-conservative party consisting of forums poster ScreamingLlama. Led by forums poster ScreamingLlama they believe in fabricating a list of 550 members to prevent their imminent deregistration as an official political party.

Voted 5.

Also stop being a bunch of shitlords carrying on about something that happened twenty years ago that half of today's party membership had no loving control over (due to, you know, being children at the time).

I'm not willing to accept the idea that one fuckup means that group should be gone forever. After all, the ALP put Kim Beazley in charge for a long while.

It was a pretty gigantic fuckup that undermined the whole point of the party, that being to "keep the bastards honest".

But honestly, I wouldn't mind a resurgence of the Democrats. There's only one left wing party that has seats in either federal house at the moment and it's distressing.

"Oh I'd never let myself be a victim. Anybody who gets scammed or raped or mugged or murdered or sent to die in a war is just a sucker and they deserve whatever they got."

There are people who look at studies of human psychology and behaviour and go "Oh wow that's hosed up, those people are poo poo and should be removed from the gene pool. I would never let myself be coerced into acting in a manner that I, regardless of context, would intellectually prefer to avoid."

Like do you think The Great Escape was a reasonable documentary and that every person who died in WW2 was guilty of cowardice for not being Steve McQueen

Another fun one is the justification of wrong-doing by scoring it against some abstract concept of balance, either personal or broader.

"What's one more dead rhino going to hurt when other people have already killed so many?" combined with "I wash my milk bottles before I recycle them so I think I can be forgiven for buying a few hundred kilos of battery farm chicken every now and then"

Wealthy people and conservatives are fantastic at the mental gymnastics required for this. Somehow the allowances for the lovely things they want to do just grow and grow while the list of good things they do to offset them just kind of stagnates. Like "I donated $50 to charity last year, I can probably rip this charity off for a few hundred grand." Then next year "I donated $50 to charity a year or two ago, I can probably get away with not paying my taxes for the next decade"

"I paid for my wife to go to New Zealand for a funeral last week, I can probably sleep with her sister and have it even out"

"I'm a really good dad, I take my kids to netball practice at least a dozen times per year, I can probably afford to arrange for the illegal detention, rape, torture, and murder of hundreds of asylum seekers and have The Big Guy even it out"

I think to some extent, everyone is guilty of this sort of behaviour. It's just that the scope is so much wider and thus the act so much more heinous when you've got money and power.

I absolutely don't excuse the behaviour, of course. Wealth and power are never coupled with the integrity or responsibility they require, for if they were I'm sure those privileged with them would see their boons redistributed.

Sulla-Marius 88 posted:

Oh definitely. I think the difference between a sincere person and a troll scraping around for any justification to 'win the argument' is an appreciation for context and intention. It's why we acknowledge legally that there is a difference between murder and manslaughter, and voluntary and involuntary manslaughter, etc.

As someone who has been brought up within a certain culture, I have been conditioned into certain distinct and indistinct racial perceptions that I cannot fully remove no matter how hard I try. As a well-off white guy in Australia who grew up where I did, I am much more likely to 'notice' a black person than an asian person, and the fact that someone is white will rarely occur to me. But as someone who appreciates the vileness and danger of racism, I try my hardest to reform these reflexes and perceptions (conscious and subconscious), even admitting that I will never attain a perfect blank slate of non-racism. But I try all the same because it's the right thing to do, rather than hand-waving it away as an objectively impossible task that shouldn't be my responsibility because I didn't choose it.

So admitting that some evil exists and is realistically inescapable (on some level, however slight) at its core doesn't mean that we can't oppose it or work hard to minimise its impact - or that these attempts don't merit the effort. That's the difference between a sincere but realistic reformer and a cynical troll just looking to masquerade at 'logic' in pursuing some self-serving false ideology.

It's the difference between saying "Murder is terrible and we should work our hardest to minimise it, which includes reducing and targeting the circumstances that encourage it or make it possible, such as poverty or mental health issues or a culture of violence and self-interest" and someone else going "Murder is always going to happen, you'll never be able to stop it at the fundamental human level so why waste money on an impossible pursuit, let's take the money we waste on a justice system and instead dump it into subsidising my personal hobby of horse rape"

I absolutely agree. Just because things can't be perfect doesn't mean they can't be better.
