Today our hero enters the mid-game, and starts dealing with even more terrible hordes. The rigors of live commentary catch up to me. But in spite of all that, I pile on an extra challenge and play the game inefficiently on purpose. Leylite Module 5: Marching Off To War Leylite Module 6: Snake Man's Nest Pay close attention, and rewind the video a bit whenever I get nicked by a few bullets. Even if you have armor, getting hit by a bullet can take off anywhere from 4 to 10 damage per bullet. A War Walker punch also just straight up does 20 damage. For comparison, a cangun only does 10 damage.

I've got to ask, why are you so leery to turn your RDX and Nailboxes into ammo? You're not using them for anything else, you've already said you don't like Nailbombs and probably won't be making those, you're not going to need them to make cannon rounds, and you always seem to have a shitton. Besides, your inventory management keeps costing you items. You've forgotten like 4 things that could have helped out a lot because you drop them or can't pick them up, then forget about them. Edit: You also missed another secret. Captain Bravo fucked around with this message at 19:18 on Apr 11, 2015 |

Besides, your inventory management keeps costing you items. You've forgotten like 4 things that could have helped out a lot because you drop them or can't pick them up, then forget about them. I actually like Nailbombs a lot - there's plenty of situations where you can just drop one while you're running away and it'll take out a lot of enemies, or at least soften them up so your other weapons can kill them faster. Keeping the nails in nailbox form does let me stay flexible as to whether or not to craft them into nailbombs or nailammo later, but you're quite right in that it would have helped me save inventory space in sector 5. Plus, as you'll notice later, I just wind up dropping my existing nailbombs and forgetting them, not even using one to kill a zombie pipe swarm like I mentioned earlier in the thread. So, the answer is that it didn't occur to me, and I was majorly distracted by the need to continue producing commentary. Frankly I'm amazed I managed to get this far in a live-commentary LP, but, well, we'll see just how far the run goes...

Oh dang, that's right. I keep forgetting that you guys are doing live commentary. You should do co-op commentary! Grab a friend. You can concentrate more on the game, and they can point things out for you that you've forgotten!

I've had at least 2 runs now where I accidentally dropped a nailbomb at my feet when I intended to knife something.

It's the late-game now. Enemies are armoring up, improving their weapons, and coming in ever-tougher combinations. Both quick thinking and an accurate aim will be necessary to proceed. Leylite Module 7: Robot Revolution Leylite Module 8: Dreadnought I also continue some more traditions: I missed another secret room in sector 8 I didn't notice a Welder dropped a taser in sector 8, which may have allowed me to make a teslacoil I wait way too long to make armor in sector 8; I could have done it much sooner than I did, probably saving some health on those camera red guards I guess we'll find out together how horrible I am at videogames.

Was a bit lax on getting the 1st post linked up, but it's fix'd now. Does anybody have a particular arena or gun they'd like to see? I showed off the four really cool ones (cannon, tesla coil, minigun, railgun). If there's no special requests, I'll probably finish up my portion of the LP with a little intro to the bonkers mod that I played some of.

Bacter, the link at the top of the OP now goes directly to one of my videos instead of my post in this thread containing modules 7 and 8. You've also got some of the video links to my individual videos labelled "Module 1" and others labelled "Leylite Module 5", and I think they should all be labelled "Leylite Module" to correspond to the titles I gave the links (even if it's a bit redundant). Anyway, can you do a few runs of Arena 3 Level 1? That one is one of the hardest arenas for me since swarmbots and welders in tight corners are a really deadly combination. Arena 4 level 3 is also a good one to show off, although I find that one easier due to more space and better weapons. As for weapons, this LP would be incomplete, incomplete I say, without using the Shotgunx2 in full-auto mode to take down an overwhelming swarm of opponents. I did a little bit of that during my run, but it was mostly just to mop up swarm tubes after the level was mostly clear - not nearly frenetic enough.

Well, folks, we've come a long way. I narrowly avoided dying in Sector 8, and regretted leaving behind a great variety of materials which may have been of some help. Now it's time to see if those medkits and teleporters will be of any use at all. It's the final two levels. Leylite Module 9: Empirical Observations Leylite Module 10: End of the Line I apologize for disappointing all of you. ...and for making the final boss look like a chump, when he is definitely not.

Whelp, I fired this game back up again and thanks to what I learned from this thread, I've made it all the way to level 7! My guy's still alive at the moment, but I'm all out of pistol, shotgun, and AGL ammo, and running low on medkits... I took the 3-5 teleporter, and my introduction to level 5 was being simultaneously attacked by three redshirts with MG-3200s, followed by another two with other weapons while I was sorting through the blood and dust. That's one hell of an opening.

Yeah, it's funny to point out the minor things you guys miss, but that's basically all we can do because ya'll play this game pretty drat well. That's two 1-10 runs in a row, jeebus.

I really wasn't expecting to survive those two scientists that ambushed me at about 2:50 in sector 10. One aspect of the EM detector that neither Bacter nor I got around to mentioning during our live commentary is that the little "enemy detected" circles only show up in a certain circular radius centered around your mouse cursor, so you can only get "warning" of areas your attention is actively focused on. Normally that works out fine - your gun is already aimed at a door you're about to open, so you can get indication of enemy positions behind that door or around that corner before you go there - but it does mean that if you hold your cursor far away from your actual character, you will not be warned about enemies sneaking up behind you! There really isn't all that much to be done about it, though (other than having a teleporter or two as backup - having medkits is only any good if you have the presence of mind to scroll to them, use them, and scroll back). Yeah that was a dang MASTERCLASS on handling the final boss. One thing I appreciate is the quite long skill curve - now I want to beat the game with no teleporter use! Righto, everybody! This LP has provided me an opportunity to do something I've never yet done, which is have a surprising, excellent moment of my own in an LP! I always do games that I love (or hate, Bureau 13 / Nightlong), but usually there's no discovery. I'm not a big fan of blind LPs (unless I'm with my pal Mzbundifund, and he knows the game already), and I don't plan on starting them, but MAN I was not expecting to go the whole way through. So I guess it's just Leylite's arena requests (and if anybody else has any before tomorrow or so) and a brief showcase of the mod, and that'll be the ballgame. I'm almost done with The Wolf Among Us too, but man, I've got SUCH a backlog of games to LP. Thanks for watching along with this mess, everybody! That and you still need to finish up those logs on the second post so we can witness the Facility AI's feeble attempts to negotiate with the hero. Thanks for starting the LP! I probably wouldn't have bothered recording a run if you hadn't made the first step of making the thread, so kudos for all your effort.

Can we see an all-nailgun run? Like, not 100% nailgun, because you'd die, but a run where you: A: Craft the nailgun as soon as you have the parts for it. B: Use the nailgun against all non-armored enemies as long as there's ammo. and C: Immediately turn all boxes of nails into ammo, and all tubes into upgrades. You'd still be able to craft and use lasgun mods and stuff, but only against enemies where the nailgun would be effectively useless. Everything else you've gotta nail it to the wall. Also it'd be neat to see you craft and use the railgun too. Nail/Rail run!

I imagine most enemies you'd end up knifing. Edit: Ok, ok, how about this, then. Rules for a nail/rail gun run 1. The main two weapons are the Nail Gun and the Rail Gun. You must craft either as soon as they are available, and upgrade as soon as you get the tools to do so. 2. You can carry one additional weapon at any time. You may pick up other weapons, but must immediately discard one of your two extra guns. 3. Whenever appropriate, use the Nail gun, Rail gun, or your knife. The third weapon should be a last resort. 4. You can only carry up to three stacks of health items. This includes Canned Meat and Healthkits 5. You can only carry up to three stacks of explosives. This includes RDX, Nailbombs, Canguns, Meat Traps, and Panzerfausts 6. Nailboxes must be turned into nailgun ammo as soon as possible. 7. The only exception for Rule #2 is on the final level, after the level has been cleared but before taking on the boss. How does that sound? It would still be tough, but should be doable, and would definitely be an entirely different ball game from how you guys have played so far. Anybody willing to give it a shot? I think the health kit limit sounds a bit harsh, but hey, the whole game's a bit harsh. What do the other nailgun upgrades do? Do they just add more barrels/simultaneous shots, or does it get better than that?

My main worry is that the first post describing this states that you need to *upgrade* the nailgun every time you can, and that would make it hopeless. You'd run out of ammo so crazy fast if you did that (plus, you know, those tubes are handy on other things like power legs and detectors, which would be massively delayed if the first 5 tubes in the game are reserved).

I just finished watching Bacter's full run and am going to check out Leylite's after discovering this a couple days ago, but can I just take a moment to applaud the ending? Maybe it's silly of me, but that Militech actually did plasmabomb the planet after everything that went down just was such a pleasant surprise. I feel like so much media these days with the "we messed with things man should not mess with oh noes!" ends with your character getting shot at the end because the big corporation foolishly wants to continue, or at best you survive but they resume research like nothing ever happened. That you get your due rewards for the hell you went through, a (presumably all expenses paid) vacation, and they actually do So yeah. Hooray for competence? Maybe?

gently caress yes, beat the game! And my first victory was also starting from level 1, without using any teleports. Much thanks to Bacter and Leylite for showing me how to play the game so I stopped ending every run on level 3. It's amazing how much of a difference it makes when you know what the hell is going on. It's interesting how these runs go -- I got precisely one "extra" taser (as a random drop), from the very first welder that I killed. I ended up killing off five squids in the last level through a combination of RDX-500s and the mg-hv because I was just flat out of lasgun and heavy rifle ammo. In fact, I managed to kill two squids together with two RDX-500s, since they were bunched up. On the other hand, I do feel like I had a lot of mg-hv ammo, which is interesting because as far as I'm aware nothing drops it in the game. I also got I think 5 motors, but none of them were on the level with the secret that contains 4 mg-3200s, so I had to wait until the end to get a minigun. Just as well, probably, since I needed it for the boss. Finally, I learned the hard way that after you drop a nailbomb, you should immediately switch to a different item slot; I accidentally dropped three nailbombs on a single zombie swarm. I'm lucky I made it out of that having taken only 60 damage!

Isn't it an awesome feeling the first time?! Plus, this does make me feel good about my central thesis - the only difference between beating this game and failing pretty badly is a little foreknowledge. And the only way to get that is through brutal repetition or watching somebody talk about how - I saw one LP where the guy was just amazing, and it was just: "oh, ok. I guess I become a demigod, and then I can beat the game. Cool." That guy did not drop a nailbomb on his head, or an RDX_500 on his head, or drop the lasergun immediately on facing a boss

One of the things that I loved about this game was how powerful the guns felt. The chromatic aberration of the screen when you fire just makes everything seem like it's got some serious punch behind it. Edit: Aaaaannnnd I just watched the Arena video.
