That may be true, but I have a hard time thinking of any small military towns I've heard of in which the base was shut down and then everyone nearby saw their local economy improve. Though they may very well exists and I just don't here about them because there isn't a problem to talk about.

Even cities can get hosed over when military bases shut down. Look at what's happened to Vallejo after Mare Island Navy Yard closed.

Or Hunter's Point in San Francisco.

I agree, when you think about it Iraq and Afghanistan actually are rightfully American territory by right of conquest and anybody who disagrees should just get offed by the occupation forces.

Neither the Taliban or the Iraqi government signed a formal document stating their unconditional surrender to the United States so this post isn't as clever as you think it is.

San Francisco in the 80s was a major world city with a diversified economy centered on high tech, finance and services. As others have noted, the Presidio and shipyards were a blip in economic terms.

It's also kind of a funny example to choose since there's two examples of how places can go to poo poo when the military leaves within two hours' travel of the Presidio: Vallejo and Hunter's Point.

To judge by posts on the forums of Something Awful's website somethingawful.com, a huge number of people think that Adolf Hitler did nothing wrong. Also the favored candidate for every election is someone known only as Goku.

Hey guys, waste regulations are really strict here in the US Army. And they're well enforced too! That's why we were able to improperly dump Agent Orange all over Okinawa, which was against existing military regulations at the time.

What I'm trying to tell you stupid civvies is that you can rest your puny brains because everything is under control. :smug:

Y'know, I'm starting to think you aren't actually interested in a good faith discussion of this issue.

Indeed, lets honor the Chinese who were brutally exterminated by the Japanese military by building a military base for the the express purpose of militarily intimidating China.

The Chinese, who are so intimidated they're still one of America's main economic trading partners despite our ongoing military confrontations with them.
