There's an RPG for professional wrestling, is professional cycling too hierarchical and regimented to be an RPG? Or would the only people interested in it rather be outside? Wasn't DFO the one with the gunner class that carted around a minigun? Too grindy; like an endless Streets of Rage. Does TSW still have the jacket with the Shadowrun dragon? That was kinda funny.

Fading Suns had a blackjack style dice resolution mechanic. Rolling higher is better, as long as you don't roll over your target, which is skill&statąsituational modifiers. I think 1 was automatic but boring success, 20 was automatic failure, unless you had high skill, and I think getting target exactly doubled degree of success.

Women not playing Magic is probably for the best; it's a terrible game, and I feel better that at least some people are saving themselves from it. My own hobbies are in every way perfect, of course.

I think RIFTS was the drop in game I played at a gamestore. The GM used the laser sight on his pistol as a pointing aid. I don't know if that counts as grog or just Arizona.

To be fair, it was only a SDC pistol.

I think GM style is way more important than system for introducing new people or kids to RPGs. With setting a close second, if you're worried about your GM style For a newbie without any system mastery? The system is just a prop, treat rolling like, like high-speed astragalomancy; roll and prophesy. Nobody cares when the oracle is talking out of their rear end, only that the oracle speaks.

Are there any RPGs revolving around algorithms? Or maybe just limited control of your character? The closest thing I can think of is Burning Wheel's Instincts, that are if-then statements of things your character automatically does. Everyone is John? In boardgames, there's Robo Rally. In CRPGs, there's Dragon Age's tactics system, or there's a genre of games revolving around writing algorithms to autopilot characters through dungeons. Maybe just stick with the algorithm question for now. Rockopolis fucked around with this message at 18:08 on Apr 23, 2015 |

I'm pretty sure I would have been a much happier person if I'd never crossed paths with Monsterhearts. I did find it interesting that lack of agency was mentioned in game design and I did think the mechanics were pretty good at encouraging the adversarial shenanigans that make up the genre.

The adversarial system is a cool concept, but the implementation tends to make the game a race to being chief bully, because being a tremendous rear end in a top hat is the primary way to get stronger and grow as a person. Kinda eighties, I guess.
