I've been listening to gansta rap since I was a kid. I grew up in a wealthy suburb and my parents hated that I listened to it. They pretty much listened to nothing but classical music and jazz and they thought rap music in general had no merit. But then one day after I'd been listening to it for about two years, I was playing an album (I forget which) in my room when my dad walked in to get something. He found what he was looking for but didn't leave the room right away. He was just standing there, listening to the music, to the lyrics, with a concentrated look on his face. I watched him as he listened to it. Finally he snapped out of his reverie and met my eyes and said, "This is music made by the dumb race" and left.

the best thing about gangsta rap is how a bunch of guys rapping about how cool it was to live dangerously and get rich used it to get fabulously richer and live more dangerously than they ever dreamed while watching countless friends and colleagues fail and/or die, until they all turned into broken, barely sane caricatures of their show-biz personalities and every single one of them either flamed out and got murdered so the back rooms of their incredibly shady publishers could sell more records, or fizzled into creative obscurity and probable mental illness in the midst of the pelf they obtained from their audience of dumb kids who craved the masculine power they seemed to manifest or were just really strongly attracted to their ability to repeatedly say the word "nigga" seemingly consequence free https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9uEtplq6CI
