I literally just finished True Detective season 1, and I didn't see anything that would point to a Lovecraftian explanation for things. It was crazy cultists bein crazy. The mention of the King in Yellow is incidental to be honest, and probably just an homage.
PS Rust is a pretty unreliable narrator to be honest.
