I don't get why people think Minnesota is more of a lock than Ottawa. They're both 7s playing 2s and made the playoffs because their goalies stood on their heads for the last 30-40 games or w/e.

Or rather, I guess I should say that if you think Minnesota is going to win, I would expect you equally think Ottawa will win.

EDIT: Obviously not many people believe this as evidenced by the NHL.com picks, but some people on this board.

I doubt there's any real thought put into these other than "my fave team of the matchup goes farther." Seriously, predictions don't need to be based on hard evidence.

The bracket I run does:

1st Round
Correct Team & Games == 15 pts + # of seed
Correct Team == 10 pts + # of seed
Wrong Team, Right games == 5 pts
Wrong Team, Wrong games == 0 pts

Conference Semis
Correct Team & Games == 25 pts + # of seed
Correct Team == 15 pts + # of seed
Wrong Team, Right games == 5 pts
Wrong Team, Wrong games == 0 pts

Conference Finals
Correct Team & Games == 35 pts + # of seed
Correct Team == 20 pts + # of seed
Wrong Team, Right games == 5 pts
Wrong Team, Wrong games == 0 pts

Stanley Cup Finals
Correct Team & Games == 50 pts + # of seed
Correct Team == 25 pts + # of seed
Wrong Team, Right games == 5 pts
Wrong Team, Wrong games == 0 pts

It gives slight bonus points for picking a lower seed. Obviously it worked better when the seeds went 1-8 and not just 1-4 twice.

I like the idea of awarding points based on the "distance" between players' guesses and the actual outcome.

- If correct team picked: 4 points, minus 1 point for each game off
- If wrong team picked: 0 points
- The Bettman point: if the series goes to 7 games, and you picked the wrong team to win in 7, you get 1 point
- Points awarded double every round

I like the Bettman point idea. Okay I think I'm going to go with 5 points for a completely correct prediction, minus 1 for each game off, so you could get as low as 2 points for picking the correct team, so still getting more points for predicting the right team over someone getting a Bettman point.

-1 point if you predict a sweep but your prediction gets swept since that warrants some sort of shaming.

Otherwise, wrong team is 0 points.

I'm not sure about doubling each round because people who didn't pick the correct teams in round 1 are not going to get any points anyway, but we have all of round 2 to waffle over that!

I'll keep two separate standings, one with just the original submissions and one adding points from the new predictions after each round since not everyone is going to keep making submissions.
