I live in a town of roughly 75,000 people. It's not a huge city, but it's not tiny either. It's been years since I've been inside of a library outside of a school or university. I had a reason to go to the public library today. There were homeless people arguing loudly, sleeping on the furniture, and rolling cigarettes all over the place. On top of that, the building stank like piss and cigarettes. Are all public libraries in larger cities like this?

My librarian friend doesn't complain about the homeless though I'm sure there are some. He claimed like 80% of the withdrawls in their district are DVDs now tho. The last time I set foot my library (different city) there was a lot more open space because of a lot less books, it looked like more of a place to hang out oddly maybe it's time to shutter libraries or replace them with some other way for poor people to access computers instead

Libraries are indeed terrible, but there is another layer to the story! Almost everyone working in a library is being paid sightly above minimum wage (think 12 dollars an hour with no benefits), and most of them have masters degrees in library science or are going to school for said degree. There is tremendous competition for these jobs since schools with library degrees are basically diploma mills that churn students out at the same rate as law schools.

I've been told that some of the bigger libraries around here are giant restrooms for the homeless. Pretty much anywhere inside is game for pissing and making GBS threads, not just the restrooms. Restrooms on upper floors are for gay buttsecks.

The libraries in northern Virginia are nice (Arlington/Alexandria), but the main branch in downtown DC is well known for being a hobo toilet. I got accosted by a guy talking about his penis within 10 mins of going in.

The problem is the more mentally-ill homeless people tend to congregate at the places with the least policy enforcement. Hence why they roll up on librarian territory. 10 years ago, when I was tutoring in libraries in towns with 50-100k people, I would regularly have to bounce angry, rambling, pis-smelling people from the study materials upon which I was focusing.) Honestly, it really wasn't even a thing, I just scream at some dudes for a minute, and they roll out. Once or twice I pick some passed-out dude from the reference stacks and shove him towards the exits. It's cuz nobody goes into library sciences because they think "gee I'd like to tangle with mentally deranged people for a living," so I don't blame the staff. Growing up in California, you just get used to homeless-wrangling Drunk Nerds fucked around with this message at 03:44 on Apr 18, 2015 |

Homeless people in libraries (and in general) wouldn't be nearly so big a problem if only homeless shelters operated on the same principle as animal shelters: living there is mandatory and if no one comes to adopt you within two weeks you're put down.

The best is when some well intentioned money people decide to refurbish public libraries into multi media centers and safe zone for children and the elderly and put a lot of effort into landscaping and architecture and in the end the hobos use it all for poop-humping

My favorite hobos are the ones that look normal, like the well dressed older man with a briefcase who buys a coffee at the snack shop and finds a table in the wifi center, who then unpacks his seven dead field mice and lampshade and most of a pigeon, and you realize his socks are drawn on with grease pencil, and he has a furious conversation with "Kevin" that can only be resolved by arranging a series of paper Dixie cups in an intricate pattern
