Although I'm seriously biased by the fact that the only vehicles with manual transmissions I've ever driven have been from the 1920-40s, serious the automatic transmission is the greatest thing ever. gently caress having your car stall because you refused to put a labor-saving device in an even larger labor-saving device.

its pretty hard to stall a remotely modern manual, if you've been driving stick longer than a month & your car doesn't have mechanical issues. i like manuals so i would probably only ever buy a car with the right amount of pedals but i'll be the first to admit that modern automatics have just began to eclipse manuals in terms of performance and aren't too far off in reliability. anything older than like a 3-5 year old design? lol hell no with a few exceptions automatic transmissions are underperforming reliability nightmares. even now yeah an automatic can get better 0-60 stats on paper, but at the end of the day they're limited by being reactive in nature while someone driving a manual transmission can see the road ahead of them & shift accordingly. modern autos are a lot better about it but they still gear hunt, and you have to be careful because almost every major car manufacturer still puts 20 year old shitbox automatic transmission designs in some of their cars.

where are you from that a 16yo can get insured for $50 a month and you can buy a car for $2000 that doesn't need regular repairs to keep it running?

if they have a good driving history $50 or less isn't unreasonable to insure a shitbox on their parents insurance. craigslist is an endless well of good running $1000-2000 ish cars if you have patience and know how to spot a good car. i had plenty of shitboxes as a teenager which i mercilessly ran into the ground with bare minimum maintaience and most of them survived at least 40-60,000 miles of neglect before i ran them into the scrapyard. hell you can actually get some really good cars for under $2000 if you look.
