I almost feel like with Letang the Pens would be more wild and prone to bad turnovers. Of course they'd have the puck a whole lot more so I'd probably still rather have Letang than not but the Pens seem a lot more disciplined in their game plan with such a lovely d since those guys never ever deviate from the game plan. The Rangers mostly dominated the first period so the gameplan isn't succeeding and I doubt having their best defenseman playing would make it worse

LmaoTheKid posted:Yes, I'm sure bad defense is what's throwing the Rangers off. Well the Rangers thrive off neutral zone turnovers and most of the Pens' d turnovers are not off the neutral zone since they never skate the puck out or attempt to do anything but lob it up the boards The Rangers get plenty of zone time but not so many 3 on 2 s or 4 on 2 s like they usually get against the Pens

Rangers do like to play a bit more open game and teams that aren't confident in their D always try to just play really conservative defense and block a lot of shots etc and yeah that does make it harder to score and makes the games kinda boring. Pens strategy is basically just play conservatively as poo poo until they get the puck into the Rangers zone and then try to start cycling, which is a good way to play the Rangers but like I said it's kind of boring.

Now I see it was all just Doughty carrying the gently caress out of him. e: This is where I give everyone the funny reminder that when the Pens won the cup Scuderi/Gill was their mainstay shutdown pairing

The team's already in cap hell and it gets a little bit worse every year. Giving him a megacontract will make the pain both more severe and more drawn out. Better to trade him. The Steelers are in a way different position from the Penguins and the time for them to bite the bullet and blow it up was about 2 years ago. I know that sounds weird coming off an 11-5 season but a lot went right for them last year (o-line health most notably) that won't likely go right again this year I could be laughably stupid and wrong about that, and anyway that's not going to happen as long as Roethlisberger's around

It was a retarded contract signed by a retarded GM but even I figured they'd get at least one or two good years out of him before the wheels fell off. But nope, turns out the Kings jettisoned him and the Penguins got him back right at the exact moment the wheels fell off

Guess we'd better sign the shambling corpse of Rob Scuderi - he's "the piece" after all.

Perron was awesome the first, like, 10 games after he escaped Frozen Hell, but... how do I put this gently... he has not been very good since then. It was a factor in the Penguins' collapse

Scuderi was noticeably way slower on his skates in fall 2014 than in spring 2014 and it only got worse from then. Every old guy definitively hits The End at some point and for Scuderi it was about 3 months ago, when in addition to being slow he rather abruptly became stupid also.
