Season 3 was like an abortion that didn't die. They thought they were getting canceled, so they went out with a bang at the end of season 2. Fox came back to them and, basically, said "LOL, just kidding! give us another season." That's why season 3 is so bad. Don't know if the same scenario holds true for Fringe season 5.
