it's a way for liberals to escape the labored, enforced sensitivity of their ordinary lives and indulge in the simplicity of a time when men were men, women were women, and everybody drank and smoked all the drat time. none of this sexual harassment crap, just tell the secretary she's got a nice rear end, 'cause you're a man and she's a woman and that's just what goes on, fer crisakes. and it's all so aestheticized that they can safely tell themselves they're watching something highbrow instead of, y'know, enjoying the boorishness of the characters

i like it  the characters are fun and the story can be pretty engaging and the show itself is very nice to look at (great detail, colors, makes great use of the time period and setting, etc.) which is cool, it's not super compelling stuff but it's still great tv
