How come when an employee decides to quit they have to give two weeks notice, but when an employer fires you they don't have to give 2 weeks notice? It's not fair imo.

When you're not a piece of worthless poo poo, you generally get a ton of notice and they also give you money to live on while you're out of a job.

It's illegal (in America) for past employers to say anything about you other than confirm that you did indeed work there and at the position/pay you claim. If they talk poo poo about you for anything (including quitting w/o notice) you can sue the poo poo out of them.

It's also not illegal to talk poo poo about a former employee, but if the former employee did find out that that has happened, it opens the company up to lawsuits, so most companies take the safe route and only confirm dates of employment, pay, and whether or not the employee is eligible to be rehired at that company.

I'd imagine that any employer that's halfway competent and doesn't want to get sued just follows the law for the most part. It's easier just to say "yes, that person worked here from this date to that date" and move on than to say something illegal because for all you know a vindictive ex-employee could be calling up, pretending to be a prospective employer just to catch you talking poo poo and sue you. This example applies more to big companies with deep pockets. I bet stupid, local business owners would be more likely to say something stupid.

Okay, that makes sense. My mother said she has had a few employers call her about previous employees and the questions are usually terse. Something like, "considering the experience you had with this employee would you consider employing them agan?"

On occasion they will give you notice - but at the end of the day it's because they have power and you do not.

Most employers are professional enough to not talk poo poo about you where it might come back to bite them but the lack of anything at all positive to say about you can be pretty readily construed as saying something about you in itself. If you're at all likely to get a recommendation from your manager it's better to stay on good terms with them when leaving than not, if you're quitting/getting sacked because you loving hate each other then screw it

So is it even worth it to give two weeks notice? Is the two weeks notice a myth constructed by corporations to take advantage of us plebs? ^^that makes sense

I've told my manager like halfway through the day that I wouldn't be showing up tomorrow, or ever, when I already had another job lined up and knew I was never goin back. It depends how much you care about leaving on good terms
