i dont wanna go to norway because i basically live as close to norway you can without actually living in norway. germany can be cool but their music sucks and they dub all tv and movies in their ugly rear end language so gently caress them canada is cool i guess i could settle for canada but as far as i know people aren't really free in canada

Sedition Act of 1918 was responsible for several people being arrested for disloyal speech or anything that the US government didn't like basically (bunch of socialists mostly). In 1940 a peacetime version of the Sedition Act called the Alien Registration Act of 1940 (Smith Act) allowed the US government to again arrest a bunch of socialists that were talking poo poo (also some nazi sympathizers and racists though). It got mostly overturned in 1957 by the Supreme Court. Also way back when John Adams was president the Alien and Sedition Acts were passed which basically let the Federalists (political party in power at the time) arrest anyone that was talking poo poo about them. One writer got fined $200 and sentenced to 9 months in jail for calling the president a "repulsive pedant, a gross hypocrite and an unprincipled oppressor." The Federalists got panned pretty heavily for this though and they ended up losing in the next election. Still not as bad as an actual fascist country but certainly people have been arrested for un-American sentiment or 'disloyalty.' There's definitely precedent for your rights disappearing right when you need them the most. Anyway OP idk if you're serious or not but being poor in America is really lovely. I agree, I just think it's important to be aware of history and to be aware of what is currently happening because it's actually fairly easy for our rights to get trampled on if we're not careful. I think one of the reasons we're better than Europe is our rights but every day we move closer to more tightly controlled speech, greater police authority, etc. When I was in Germany it was chill for cops to search anyone they liked for no reason and pull people over for no reason just to check on them and I thought it was super weird.
