Isaac Asimov, who was very smart before he died, worked out how many people could live on this planet. His calculations showed him that, if all the people lived like average Americans (generally considered a high standard of living), then the planet could support perhaps 2 billion people. If we were satisfied with less (the average American would not be) then, we could fit in a few million more. This leaves us with a problem. What to do with the excess population? According to Ike, it was a simple matter. We can reduce the birth rate until we eventually fall to the 2 billion mark through attrition, or we can radically increase the death rate. He figured that that would either be facilitated by wars (small and slow loss of life) or a major plague brought about by crappy conditions for most human (potentially major and fast loss of life). Then he concluded that the most humane way of lowering the population was to lower the birth rate. And the easiest way to lower the birth rate was to increase the standard of living (thus reducing the need for big families), and reducing the influence of religions which demand large families. There is simply too much technology. We need a global EMP to knock us back into the 1900s.

nuclear war famine/drought from global warming or whatever super bacteria / virus yellowstone erupting etc it's only a matter of time before the global population culling event, whatever form it ends up taking ecosystems always find a way to curb-stomp any population that gets too large for its own good, if said population fails to migrate to new environments with new resources. but our brightest minds are more interested in designing new smartphones than researching and developing interstellar space travel, so we're boned
