I'm the kind of person that openly embraces the dumb bullshit of MGS4 and the games after it for what it's worth mainly because I never was THAT invested in where the plot or the universe was going. I was always more excited at seeing where Hideo Kojima's Wild Ride would head next, plausibility be damned.

That said, even with the gameplay advances in 4 I still found MGS3 the better title mechanics wise because stealth was still a requirement and you couldn't completely circumvent it by going guns blazing all the time. Yeah, there's still some incentive for being sneaky, but not really much of a meaningful penalty to going full action instead.

I personally found MGS3 the best of the group. The mechanics still aren't totally modern and smooth (though the Subsistence version adds a regular third-person camera mode like 4 had), but it lets you play quiet or loud without massive penalty and has a lot of neat features like the food and medical stuff. It's got really great music and the characters are mostly pretty awesome, and it fully embraces every insane 1960s spy film trope mixed with the Kojima craziness.

I'm a weirdo in that I really really like MGS2. Kojima crammed it so full of little mechanical details that are really incredible, and often not pointed out at all. (Like how the escort mission's the only place you need your sniper rifle, the rest of the times you might use it you can just manually aim the pistol in first person mode, and the sights actually work right and it has quite a bit of distance on it). Like, if you can look past how lame and whiny MGS2 Raiden is, it's a solid little game.

Also, as we're not caring about spoilers, go ahead and check the PAL key in your inventory in the furnace and the freezer rooms. It totally changes shape long before they reveal that plot point to you.

I like MGS2 easily the most of the bunch. Solid gameplay, good plot without going too overboard with the exposition. I know a lot of people complain about Raiden, but honestly he wouldn't be half as annoying without Rose around.

Also, if you think Mantis got screwed now, you haven't played the PC port. The game needed to be beatable so he only reads your input if you use a gamepad and you beat him by using the keyboard. Of course, very few people did have gamepads back then so this feature went completely over our heads.

edit: Actually, I like Mantis a lot especially since he provides a pretty good explanation for his creepiness in his post-fight speech: he's so disgusted by seeing the sexual drive everywhere he uses it to weird people out, ie what he did with Meryl at the start. He's a rarely self-aware bad guy, which fits with his theme of breaking the fourth wall... KOJIMA!

I never really got that annoyed by Raiden, although Rose pulled the drag chute on the entire game every god drat time you tried to save the game.

I got stopped by Olga on Extreme in MGS2 when I tried going for all the dog tags in the tanker chapter. The thing that hit me hard about it and kind of resent the game now for is how little the game's challenge increases during stealth as it does during the bosses. It's still the same easy line of sight poo poo with a radar to show you the map layout and enemy movements, but the moment you get into a mandatory fight with someone you just get wrecked within two hits.

MGS2 was my first MG game and the one I have probably played the most. I had never heard of the series before, and so when the Raiden switcheroo came about, I was not peeved off by it. I liked Raiden, in fact. He was kind of a dork, and that was just fine by me.

However, I don't know how 16 year old me could possibly stomach getting all the dog tags on all difficulties.

MGS2 was pretty drat amazing when it came out. Not only it was visually gorgeous but it still runs better than many PS4 games. Luckily KojiPro's mentality for MGSV seems to be "Since we have more processing power now, we could actually use it to make the game perform better"

MGS2 and 3 were pretty ahead of the curve for the PS2 era. They had drat good graphics for their time, but they also had a major focus on motion-captured cutscenes that made them feel like CG movies.

This was always the problem I had with MGS2. Back then, and even with the HD ports or whatever, I just could not get past Olga on Extreme. I had every dog tag in the Tanker up to that point on every difficulty, and then just a full brick wall of her getting perfect head shots forever. I always made a separate save just for tanker alone, just so if I did get stuck, I wouldn't make my save useless and I could still play other difficulties with my unlocks and try to forget extreme.

For some reason I was able to handle her. I did all the tanker chapters separate when hunting for the tags, instead of running complete story mode.

What's funny is then I didn't try subsistance for like, 4 or 5 years after that and it just tore me apart.

Who's ready for some backtracking?!

Fun facts for this episode:

- The reason it doesn't let us backtrack is so we can't get the PSG-1 early. Doesn't mean I have to like it though.
- Apparently my muscle memory remembers the pupcave way better than my brain does
- I loving hate the sniper wolf fight. Snake moves the PSG-1 so slowly that you usually get shot before you can get your sights back on Wolf. MGS1's controls did NOT age well. The entire difficulty of the fight is solely how difficult it is to aim.
- We finish up the most egregious backtracking in this and the next episode. I don't mind the PAL key backtracking as much, at least it's the same building, and we get to see REX by then.
- Grace is a liar.

It occurs that later games(MGS4 being the worst offender) have long stretches of cutscenes that don't give you a chance to break between them. Are episode lengths going to change in later games as a result?

Choco1980

I had no idea you could stun the wolves. You sure as crap can't shoot them if Meryl's there. And yeah, Grace is right, Sniper Wolf is the one taking care of the dogs (alongside Otacon...how does that dweeb get so many chicks? Like seriously, every single woman with issues in the series (so every single woman in the series) is totally dickmatized by this guy who's basically a goon) and if you hang on to her handkerchief that you get after battle 2 as your primary item, it has the same effect as the peed-on box without effing up your mobility.

Also those wolves are crazy. One time I went through during a point after this in the game and didn't do any measures to make them like me, so they were all riled up, and I decided to take a breather outside the crawlspace. They were going nuts for me on the other side. Then I hear this scraping sound, and look in first person, and one wolf is actually crawling very slowly under the rocks, scraping against them to get to me in his rage, and made it through to fight me. :dogbutton:

I liked the Briefings in MGS1. Sure it's a lot of exposition but it's really cool exposition compared to say, MGS4's Briefings. I just remember being really blown away by the cinematic style of them.

They also make Snake look like he has blond hair, which was part of a huge debate in the MGS fandom about what color Snake's hair is. After all, why cut his hair if it's naturally brown and Liquid's is blond? He cut his hair so as not to be mistaken for Liquid but if they have two entirely different hair colors, this shouldn't be a problem.

You know, I remember I must have played MGS1 for the first time when I was in high school because I recall learning about genes and hearing that blond hair was a recessive trait and Iteeange me was all sorts of confused because that didn't match up at all with what this video game told me.

That's a popular theory. But it's also possible his hair just looks blonde because of the "style" those scenes were shot in. I'm not against the idea he dyed his hair but it wouldn't be hard to provide arguments to the contrary.

Also, I totally called it back in 1998 that they were lampshading that Big Boss wasn't dead here as the big reason why they weren't sending his remains to the terrorists.

Yep! He slashes up the door lock, and even if you don't leave, Johnny notices the door is open and shoots at you.

Also if it does catch you doing autofire, it just electrocutes you forever and never actually ends. I figured something cool would happen :( I could have sworn in the Twin Snakes, he shoots you if he detects autofire, but I also can't find any videos of it.

EDIT: I found this horrible quality clip of Ocelot breaking the 4th wall even more than he did in the PSX version, I love MGS' constaint fourth wall breaking.
