I've seen some compelling arguments from both sides of this debate but I'm interested in the GBS take on whether it's gayer to be a male or female character when you play video games. Some established lines of reasoning I've seen: 1. The looking at a man's butt or a woman's butt for 600 hours meme (obligatory). 2. "I play games to get away from mundane everyday life" - Not the most sound argument because it's heavily dependent on whether you are a bimbo or gym bro irl, and hints at repressed desires. 3. Transgender people playing as the opposite sex - Can be gay but usually less so than cis people doing the same thing because it's therapeutic. Kind of a lose/lose proposition because it's generally considered gay or at least on the gay spectrum to be transgender. 4. Free items - This one's quetionable for the same reasons as all the supposedly straight guys making gay porn. 5. Different stats / gear - The least gay but probably most sexist reason, and one of the more popular ones for both of those reasons. 6. I just play as whatever I am in real life - Maybe not the gayest option but definitely one of the more boring and uninspired ones; practically a non-choice. I'm surprised people this unimaginative aren't just playing CoD but they are out there, as you can see from their inclusion in this list.

Mr.Pibbleton posted:What if you're playing as a futanari? I don't think that's an option in very many games, I haven't seen it so I can't really say for sure. It is an interesting line of thought though.

autoaim.cfg posted:I only play Dwarves. That sounds cool, and only incidentally gay at most, so I suppose it does help since it's sort of like a 1 on the video game Kinsey scale.

psyopmonkey posted:I play as chicks because gamer dudes are too dreamy and I get lost staring at their butts and shoulders. This argument is pretty common with a few variations, but it doesn't really hold up when you consider that a) a lot of games nowadays have a fixed (male) protagonist and also b) a large proportion of games have a first person perspective so you almost never see the character anyway - so maybe in the case of first person games it's more about what the character does or doesn't say, rather than what they look like.

Mr.Pibbleton posted:Barkley 2 will have five gender toggles: Male, female, dwarf, gay and hermaphradite and yes multiple selections are an option. If hermaphrodite was an option in every game this whole discussion would be moot because it's basically impossible for a hermaphrodite to be gay.

If you're a min-maxing "hardcore" gamer who plays to win, chances are you've been press-ganged into playing as a girl at least once because of the undeniable tactical advantages of overtly female characters like Chun Li or Princess Peach.
