Speaking from the other end of our dozen-video backlog, I think this is a perfectly decent game that suffers from being forced into an incredibly bland mold. You can see flashes of unique ideas and fun concepts, but it's all drowned out by Things Open World Games Have For Their Own Sake.

This game also completely ignores one of the most important details that makes its setting. Chicago is by far the most racially segregated city in America. The whole place is made up of super homogenized neighborhoods established in a long-running history of the city shafting minorities.

Does Watch_____Dogs ever mention any of this once? Of course not; this is a AAA game. Ubisoft would just like to recreate some real buildings, throw them on a map that makes no sense and call it a day.

This brings up a really good point. When I get bent out of shape about the city's physical terrain, it's because it's a product and a reflection of its human terrain. Mashing some things together, cutting most of the city away entirely, and filling in the map with bland inventions of your own erases everything about the city that makes it interesting or worth telling stories about. for example, like your article's source points out, the south and west sides are the black belts of Chicago. They grew in separate waves of migration from the south and met different housing policies, and the difference in character between, say, Garfield Park and Bronzeville still reflect that. Watch_Dogs' west side is where they put the north side neighborhoods, and its south side doesn't exist.

Going into all this takes more time than we have between stuff to talk about in the videos, and isn't the sort of light-hearted fun it takes to counterpoint Aiden the Awful Uncle, but just keep in mind that when I complain about things that they changed, it's because the way it is in reality means something.

Some awesome editing at the end of this episode and SUPER nice stuff in that Chicago video, btw! Awesome work, dude :D

Since he starts the trip by passing out at the dealer's feet I think someone called an ambulance but as soon as the paramedics recognized Aiden they dumped him somewhere and fudged the paperwork.

Danger Patrol is a game inspired by mid-century pulp adventures. The unique thing about it, is that you increase your dice pool by explaining just how many things can go wrong, and how bad the consequences could be when they do. You can get the game for free here.

Danger Patrol Chat: Building… Tension
Ironicus, AWoodenPalisade, Gharbad, and Gnome are joined by guests Violet, Chip Cheezum, and a .rtf file to discuss… tension. Specifically, how it is used in storytelling media– especially tabletop games. Tension is difficult to balance, and for a pre-written story, is carefully adjusted with cues for danger and story-based investment. It becomes far dicier when tension is incorporated into a game where the story is “written” as it is played. Danger Patrol not only explores bringing tension into the story, but into the core mechanic as well.

Danger Patrol Part 0: Casting Call
That hot new season of Danger Patrol is in need of a new round of actors and provocateurs, so director-master Gnome brings in Ironicus, PoorWeather, AWoodenPalisade, Gharbad, Chip Cheezum, and Violet to explain the ups and downs. From dangerously close to a nameless hero to dangerously close to libel from multiple other broadcast networks, this Patrol will have it all!

Danger Patrol 1-1: S02E01 Red Vengeance! Breaking the Rules of Nature!
This week, on the premiere of an all-new season of Danger Patrol! We welcome back the Professor (Ironicus), Crow Simons (AWoodenPalisade), the Tawny Owl (PoorWeather), Rolo Randall the Sepctral Sleuth (Chip Cheezum), “Livid” Leslie Chesterfield (Violet), and Billy the Kid himself, the Billybot Gruffmaster 9000 (Gharbad)! When we last saw the Danger Patrol, a dastardly trick by the Crimson Republic led them to launch missiles at our own beloved home, Rocket City! But did they run? Did they hide?! No! Our beloved heroes brace their mettle against enemy metal and save us once again! Listen on, gentle citizen, and remember– Rad-Soap Saves Lives!

Danger Patrol 1-2: S02E02 Ruination! Promotional Consideration by Pizza Vault!
WHY 30 PIZZAS? The Danger Patrol finally gets to the bottom of the question that has haunted Crow Simons since Season 1! The Crimson Republic’s plots have brought their doomsday device to the very roots of Rocket City, the ancient Martian ruins! The team races to investigate and intervene, stretching their abilities to the limit! Remember: buy war bonds– support the Danger Patrol, and keep your bed safe!

The newsstands were on my mind because I had just walked through a location shoot for Chicago PD the day before where they were setting one up where one doesn't exist. In that case I blame Law & Order specifically, rather than the more general Manhattan hegemony. So from what I'm reading the amount goes: Manhattan>Watch_Dogs>Actual Chicago (total)>Actual Chicago (in use).

The set was also full of free local magazines and newspapers stocked as if for sale, so that's one way to get cheap props.

The closer you get to the Loop, the more it feels like Chicago. The legally distinct lookalike buildings grab the character of the originals, and it has a familiar feel. Moving outward, some places combine too many things and are either laughable (The one stadium that looks like all the stadiums) or unrecognizable. The plentiful warehouses and boat yards come off more like "things we need for an open-world crime game" than anything you'd actually encounter here. Pawnee is hours away and has no mountain. Tourist Chicago is pretty square, and the River North of Watch_Dogs comes off like the near-future the cyberpunk plot would suggest it has to be.
