Speaking from the other end of our dozen-video backlog, I think this is a perfectly decent game that suffers from being forced into an incredibly bland mold. You can see flashes of unique ideas and fun concepts, but it's all drowned out by Things Open World Games Have For Their Own Sake.

TheLoser posted:This game also completely ignores one of the most important details that makes its setting. Chicago is by far the most racially segregated city in America. The whole place is made up of super homogenized neighborhoods established in a long-running history of the city shafting minorities. This brings up a really good point. When I get bent out of shape about the city's physical terrain, it's because it's a product and a reflection of its human terrain. Mashing some things together, cutting most of the city away entirely, and filling in the map with bland inventions of your own erases everything about the city that makes it interesting or worth telling stories about. for example, like your article's source points out, the south and west sides are the black belts of Chicago. They grew in separate waves of migration from the south and met different housing policies, and the difference in character between, say, Garfield Park and Bronzeville still reflect that. Watch_Dogs' west side is where they put the north side neighborhoods, and its south side doesn't exist. Going into all this takes more time than we have between stuff to talk about in the videos, and isn't the sort of light-hearted fun it takes to counterpoint Aiden the Awful Uncle, but just keep in mind that when I complain about things that they changed, it's because the way it is in reality means something.

VoidBurger posted:I love that Aiden wakes up in a random alley after digital trips. He must have been hazily wandering around Chicago, yelling "PEW PEW PEW KILL 20 COPS gently caress YOU I'M A SPIDER" at pedestrians until he got tuckered out and took a nap in a gutter. Since he starts the trip by passing out at the dealer's feet I think someone called an ambulance but as soon as the paramedics recognized Aiden they dumped him somewhere and fudged the paperwork.

I'm shocked people haven't been sharing pictures of their own dogs just to kill time.

The newsstands were on my mind because I had just walked through a location shoot for Chicago PD the day before where they were setting one up where one doesn't exist. In that case I blame Law & Order specifically, rather than the more general Manhattan hegemony. So from what I'm reading the amount goes: Manhattan>Watch_Dogs>Actual Chicago (total)>Actual Chicago (in use). The set was also full of free local magazines and newspapers stocked as if for sale, so that's one way to get cheap props.

The closer you get to the Loop, the more it feels like Chicago. The legally distinct lookalike buildings grab the character of the originals, and it has a familiar feel. Moving outward, some places combine too many things and are either laughable (The one stadium that looks like all the stadiums) or unrecognizable. The plentiful warehouses and boat yards come off more like "things we need for an open-world crime game" than anything you'd actually encounter here. Pawnee is hours away and has no mountain. Tourist Chicago is pretty square, and the River North of Watch_Dogs comes off like the near-future the cyberpunk plot would suggest it has to be.

I have been going under the assumption that Chip does the editing for the regular videos, so I've been wondering who does it for these history lessons. Are they done totally by Ironicus, or is it more of a collaboration? I do the research and write the script, then I send Chip the audio I record along with a script annotated with sight or audio gag suggestions and a bunch of images. He puts that all together and makes it actually work.

Chicago Stadium is more of a fusion of Soldier Field and Wrigley, in the United Center's location, with Cellular Field's team. The game starts you out in the clearest example of its whole amalgam thing.
