The fact that he's spent the past six years doing almost non-stop charity work and humanitarian efforts make me think that on some level he has finally realized what a monster he is and is desperately working to try and atone for being directly responsible for an illegal war based on lies with a six-figure death count and literally nothing to show for it in the end.

Doubtful. A ton of people who know/knew him, including his own wife, have all said that he basically has zero capacity for introspection. He's not the kind of person who spends time reflecting on the past while feeling guilt and remorse for his mistakes and misdeeds.

To the apologists: while he was almost certainly manipulated a good deal, he wasn't exactly a good person himself. For instance, while governor of Texas, he refused to commute the sentence of a retarded person who had been sentenced to death.

And he was also just kind of a tool. When confronted by the grieving mother of a dead US soldier, he told her that she needed to leave him alone so he could get on with his life. And let's not forget that Bush used to insist on getting to bed by 9 PM no matter what was happening, and used to effectively take Sunday off (he insisted on there being no daily briefings on Sunday, etc).

As to why the Clintons warmed up to him? Well, rich people with close ties to Wall Street tend to stick together.
