The Simpsons Movie might be the "best" thing made during the new simpsons era and it was pretty bad overall. Not as bad as the episodes made around the same time though.

That's because the movie was written by a "dream team" of Simpsons writers from the glory days and the lovely new ones. The old writers were recovered enough from not writing the show to bring some of the old magic back a bit, but the new writers weighed the whole thing down.

Its the risk you run with the designated 'SERIOUS' character who's the lone, usually cynical, voice of reason and intelligence. Personally I think that Lisa in the very early episodes could be really grating in the way a whole precious little snowflake who nobody understands can end up being, it was only around the third season that they were able to come up with scenarios where she didn't really seem mopey and quietly elitist, while being more proactive about issues that concerns everyone but not losing sight of the fact that she's an 8 year old girl for god's sake (the Malibu Stacy and Lisa's rival episodes are great).
