Family Guy had some novelty cult cred back when it was hovering on the razor's edge of cancellation and was one of the first real "cancelled animated gems out in full on DVD" alongside Futurama, but once Adult Swim ran both shows into the ground via reruns and both shows were brought back any residual goodwill I had for Family Guy evaporated. It's not the worst show I've seen and like if nothing else is on and I have to watch TV--this has actually happened at my job--then I will, but I'll rarely watch it if I have a choice.

American Dad, esp. seasons 3-8, were way better than anything Family Guy ever put out because they mostly relegate Seth MacFarlane into being an actor and keep the material relatively grounded which is saying a loving lot as one of the main characters is a literal alien who can do almost anything the plot needs him to from episode to episode.

11 seasons, and it's still going, and it still manages to be funny. If you watched the premiere episode and tried to judge it from there, you -like so many reviewers out there- hosed up.

The first episode of Season 2 is "Bullocks to Stan" which is also the first good episode in the series, and is actually very good. However, I think Seasons 2 and 3 are still a little weak in places.

Seasons 4-6 are the absolute prime and are loving hilarious front to back, it was easily the best animated show on television during this period.

Yeah the first season is p. shaky and the premiere episode is atrocious, but when the show hits its stride it's easily the closest any animated show has come to Simpsons Seasons 4-7 in my book. Season 3 has some real highlights and from Season 4 onward it's excellent. It's still ok now but the magic is definitely gone. The Christmas Episodes alone are worth seeking out, particularly "Rapture's Delight."

Watching that now on Netflix. It's alright for the most part, but having Cleveland be a big beta bitch all the time gets kind of pathetic. Especially since his friends were made to be down right awful to make him look good.

Also there seems to be a lot of episodes where the plot is never resolved in anyway simply because they want to end the episode on a joke.

There are still some amazing episodes in the later seasons though- "Hot Water" is one of the best uses of a guest star in any animated show, and "Blood Crieth Unto Heaven" is amazing if you like theater. I don't know any other show that would have even considered doing a send-up of August: Osage County.

Yes, sort of. The show started with a short first season, seven episodes of establishing filler crap. You want to start on episode 8 (or 9), "Bullocks to Stan". Technically this is the beginning of the "second season", since the show started as a mid season replacement, and episode 8 was the first fall season episode, but Netflix, iTunes and others consider that to still be season 1.

No, that one is funny but Raptures Delight is another world of amazing.

I think he is thinking of the one where the blonde angel is a struggling heaven lawyer and stan is stuck until she can prove he's good or something. Raptures Delight is the post apocalyptic one.

Also recommend the one where Jeff is in Roger's race's spaceship proving his love for Haley, that's my favorite one even though it's a little past all the best seasons.

The angel lawyer was the season before, and she cameos at the end of "Rapture's Delight" after Stan dies to show him his own personal heaven-- which happens to be him returning to the Christmas Eve right before the Rapture and being able to live out "normal" life again.

The angel lawyer episode does feature one of my favorite side character asides, something American Dad is really good at:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jbX1o9yyBY

I can't find the clip but after Stan runs out of the courtroom the same background angel caps the scene by going "Not complaining. I'm happy here. But seriously, why do we have those?"

Yeah but even those episodes were like several seasons ago by now. Compared to how some shows (Futurama, Family Guy, The Simpsons, even South Park) seemed to see going beneath the basement of quality as some sort-of challenge, American Dad has remained very consistent, but it definitely hasn't hit the same sustained level it did at its stride.
