The hell is this?

Mad Max: Fury Road is a theatrical OVA released May 15th, premiering internationally before coming out in Japan oddly. Notably, despite being a revival of an 80s series, they've managed to release series creator George Miller from the ancient tomb in which he was sealed. Not returning, thankfully, is former star Mel Gibson.

What's the plot?

From Moonphase:

quote:

An apocalyptic story set in the furthest reaches of our planet, in a stark desert landscape where humanity is broken, and almost everyone is crazed fighting for the necessities of life. Within this world exist two rebels on the run who just might be able to restore order. There's Max, a man of action and a man of few words, who seeks peace of mind following the loss of his wife and child in the aftermath of the chaos. And Furiosa, a woman of action and a woman who believes her path to survival may be achieved if she can make it across the desert back to her childhood homeland.

Why should I watch it?

Because it's basically cinematic porn. You thought Redline had good animation? Roboworld has nothing on the dangers of post-apocalyptic Australia. Structurally, it's most similar to Road Warrior of the previous entries, except with even less down time and with a lot of the mutants and poo poo from Beyond Thunderdome. So it's the Mad Max people think existed already. If you aren't familiar with the franchise, just imagine Redline mixed with Fist of the North Star. Anyone can die, and they do so both awesome and in utterly ridiculous ways.

Cast:

Max Rockatansky (CV: Tom Hardy)
Our would-be main character, Max used to be a cop before the end of the world, and aside of the destruction of everything he cared about, he's benefited immensely from the apocalypse by virtue of no longer having the most ridiculous name around. In practice, only in the very first movie is he really the center of the story, and really just serves as muscle to affect it.

Imperator Furiosa (CV: Charlize Theron)
Our actual main character, she's a leader of the Citadel's war party, but kicks off the plot by breaking off from the back, heading for her ancestral homeland with some very important passengers.

Nux (CV: Nicholas Holt)
This poor schmuck is one of the warboys, irradiated, disposable foot soldiers of the Citadel. Max ending up as his Blood Bag changes his battle plans considerably.

Immortan Joe (CV: Hugh Keays-Byrne) the ancient, ailing warlord of the Citadel, obsessed with branding everything with his emblem and having heirs. He's livid at Furiosa for stealing what he considers his "property."

E: Apparently success has been grand enough to warrant a new entry, with the (working?) title Mad Max: Furiosa

For a harem anime I was actually impressed with how the woman were portrayed in this OVA. Usually the woman are reliant on the man and have very little motivation of their own. But in this anime the man is following the woman and providing her support in her journey. I was pleasantly surprised by the positive portrayal of women.

I mean the original trilogy is weird because the good stuff is the 2nd and first half of the 3rd.

Fury Road is even better than Road Warrior though.

Not interested because it doesn't have Mel Gibson.

Hardy is good and doesn't have the baggage. Go see Fury Road.

Would you be interested if Hardy was a sexist anti-Semite?

No, I'd only be interested if it has Mel Gibson and was shot in Australia. I'm sure it's a good movie, though.

You're dumb if you're serious.

Also it is partly shot in Australia. The other locales are apparently Nambia and South Africa.

I know you're probably loving around but it's a legitimate good movie. It surpassed my expectations in every single way.

I think that turned in to Fury Road, though I'm guessing it'll be back on if this does well.

When does it come out in Japan?

I want to hear what all the shonen jump authors and the guy who draws fairy tail have to say about it.

I'm not sure how they're going to squeeze all the various backstories from the VN into just one movie.

This should have been a 52 episode series.

Edit: VN spoilers: for example, I don't have any faith they'll include the Guzzoline H-scene which is critical to character development in later arcs.

There's just one problem: Max-kun's new highschool is actually a post apocalyptic car gang! What sort of high-school romantic comedy will our hero have? <3

Mad Max is Tetsuo Hara's favourite film and I hope George Miller does a live action Fist of the Northstar movie.
