Even the most basic piece of analysis will tell you that lots of points in the minors/college/Europe has the highest chance of translating to success in the NHL. It's obviously not a foolproof strategy, but when a draft pick is essentially a lottery ticket might as well buy the one with a $1,000,000 prize instead of the one with the $100 prize if the odds are the same (and they aren't, draft skill). E: with that said Johnson is not a great example of this. He was never a big point producer in junior until his overage season, and even then 100+ points from an overage forward is pretty standard. A lot of very forgettable players have had much better junior careers and gone on to work for moving companies 3 years later.
