Not everyone can (or should) raise wolves in Alaska or whatever. They're all things that people do in the path through life but it's such aggravatingly herteronormatively white-picket fence bullshit that feels like it belongs in a different generation to see it laid out as some template for a successful life by a loan company of all things.

everything you accomplish is measured by how well you stack up against your peers and money is literally everything. I am saying this completely unironically.

we stepped back from scratching and clawing at the american dream, are selling our house in a "good town to raise kids in" and bought an rv to live in while we smoke grass and ride bikes in colorado

we plan to go and purchase some acreage and start a little hobby farm/ranch/whatever in about ten years, but this time we'll be planned and ready and doing it for ourselves, rather than just trying to keep up with the joneses

How exactly are you supposed to rise to management by working full-time starting at 18 at the kind of jobs available to unskilled 18 year-olds (mostly factory, retail and food)? If they need a manager they are going to find someone with management experience and an MBA, not promote a cashier or the guy putting widgets in a box.

Old people seem to still be hooked on that mail-room to CEO fantasy.

I'm 28 making more than average but still not great but I don't have a degree so oh well.
No kids, living in a huge house with GF who is rocketing through her career and making better money.

No holidays or cars yet but we're in the middle of the city. We also have two pets.

So, my question is: What caliber of bullet will ensure the most brain matter covers the walls of my study?

If your salary is 60k you are not bringing home 5k a month. Not to say its not livable if you live in the right place but for example i have a friend in seattle making that and he lived in a studio the size of a parking space until he finally got sick of that and just went back to having roommates.

Still though. My monthly expenses are about $1.5k and that's with a decent apartment, utilities, car, insurance, food, and the occasional fun purchase, and I think I'm living pretty nicely. I'm squirreling the rest away into savings/travel. Either I'm missing something or most people are loving awful at managing their money.

There are places, mostly where the tech and finance jobs are, where that is on the lower side for rent even with roommates.

I didn't get charged interest until after I graduated because these were communist loans from the government.

Also for reference I graduated when I was 28; if I had been on the normal ~21/22-year-old graduation schedule as required by the subject life plan then I would have been paid off by now.

your monthly bill total is more than what most people even make in a month period, and then you have disposable income to save/travel with when you're done? you're missing the part where you're extremely lucky and your situation is very atypical

Granted that's pre-tax and not takehome but there are other places to live in the world than coastal hipstervilles that have been devoured by the tech industry. I know goons hate anywhere more than 200 miles inland but if you can't live comfortably on 60k you are just punishing yourself. Like, yeah, you can't live off 60,000 comfortably in Manhattan, but not everyone lives in Manhattan and despite what media might make you think there are nice places to live all over the place that have low costs of living.

Raleigh, NC, one of the top cities for finding employment today:
http://www.apartments.com/raleigh-nc/

And those are all mostly ultra-modern apartments, if you are willing to live in the suburbs you can easily get sub-$1000.

Using this:
http://www.adp.com/tools-and-resources/calculators-and-tools/payroll-calculators/salary-paycheck-calculator.aspx
for NC with no deductions leaves you with ~$3,500/month.
