so why do the desires of the russians overrule the desire of the ukrainians like its kind of weird that everyone is acting like this is a huge geopolitical struggle between west and east when it all started when the ukrainians told the russians to gently caress off and chased their puppet out of town the us didnt give a gently caress about ukraine until the poo poo hit the fan and russia invaded

Fojar38 posted:so why do the desires of the russians overrule the desire of the ukrainians because it is a huge geopolitical struggle. ukraine wants to join the EU. Russia doesn't want them to. There's a lot of tension over that. The US obviously wants Ukraine in the EU buying oil from them but Russia is getting its feathers ruffled because they are the ones selling oil to Ukraine and they don't want that to stop. Also, there's a lot of people who think of themselves as Russian living in Ukraine. That's they're home, but they speak Russian and identify as Russian. Recently the Ukrainian government dropped Russian as a state language which pissed a lot of people off so there's a legit argument for 'these people want to leave Ukraine and either be their own country or rejoin Russia.'

Most of the russia butt hurt is how they failed to expand their sphere of influence after the soviet union fell apart, while NATO/EU did successfully expand.
