The Thin Red Line is an amazing movie from an artistic standpoint, beautiful cinematography. If you like good movies with a bit of runtime, see this. Also Jim Caviziel's character. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHHAcqZMlqA

Saving Private Ryan is responsible for 95% of the snipers in Team Fortress naming themselves Private Jackson...you would trip over 8 snipers all fighting for the same space.

quakster posted:saving private ryan's premise is "some people's lives are worth more than others". richie rich propaganda He'd like you to think that it's 100% "how much grief and tragedy can one family be expected to bear", but yeah, pretty much. The Sullivan brothers thing is a thing that actually happened, a family lost all five sons in a single attack in the Pacific Theater in 1942. But there was no official policy or "Sullivan Law" enacted during the war to prevent that from happening again. The movie is sort-of-kind-of based on the real story of the Niland brothers. In real life, the Niland Brothers lost two of the four during the D-Day invasion and the third was POW/MIA in the Pacific theater around the same time, but in the real story, nobody sent any teams of rangers looking for one guy who might or might not have been alive just to send him home. A single Chaplain found out about what happened and went around to the different camps looking for the surviving Niland brother, Fritz. Fritz was voluntarily transferred off of the front line and sent stateside to finish his enlistment, but nobody died to get him out safely. The Sole Survivor policy, which was officially enacted in 1948 and is still in effect today, states that when multiple siblings lose their life in combat, the remaining ones are urged (but not required) to be relieved of combat duty and sent back to the states. There was no official law or policy in 1944, so in the movie, when Ryan says he doesn't want to go; he wants to stay with his unit, that would have been the end of the story. This is another big reason why The Longest Day is the superior story. Although almost everybody the story focused on survived, nobody was more important than anybody else. There was no single heroic team that saved the day on Omaha, there was no single individual who had to be saved, all those big stars they had in the film essentially got bit parts, because it was a massive multinational effort, not a modern heroic objectivist mary sue adventure story.

quakster posted:saving private ryan's premise is "some people's lives are worth more than others". richie rich propaganda It's one of those things where Tom Hanks is like "We need to have this purpose, this is bigger than us, it's an important thing" and you just kind of accept it because Tom Hanks is saying it so I guess it's the moral of the movie, but yeah if you stop and think about it it's stupid as gently caress.
