So how is this game?

I think one could reasonably argue that this is the best and most feature-complete survival game available at this point in time. It seems like a lot of the mechanics had a substantial amount of thought put into them, and now the developers are trying to revise mechanics based on what they see people actually doing. Given that they're also intending to add what sounds to be a bunch more content, the future seems promising. The only glaring problem at this point in time is the utter lack of optimization, so if you can overlook topping out around 20 FPS, then this is a good survival game.

Another Early Access sandbox survival multiplayer game? Why should I care?

  • Progression in-game: Different armor types, skill points/character leveling, knowledge (blueprints), base building, farming.
  • End Game: The end game will be developed throughout early access and feedback will be taken from the community.
  • Mod Support in Early Access [PC]: Mod support will be provided in Early Access, some content could also be implemented into the final version of the game.
  • Taming/Training Animals: You will be able to tame and train animals that you come across in-game which could help benefit you in surviving be it resource collection or hunting. There is no limit on how many animals you can tame/train, but you better be sure to have enough food to feed them all!
  • Mount Combat: You will be able to use your mounts for combat, this includes “roadkilling” and also adding weapons to the mount that you can craft. Expect the mount weapons to be a WIP concept.

FAQ
  • How Long Until Official Release?
It’ll be about a year until it’s officially released, but it will hit Early Access on June 2.
  • How much will an Early Access cost?
    25$
  • How Many Developers Are Working On ARK?

More than 40 members are working on ARK: Survival Evolved.
  • Will the game really update every two days?
That is what the team is aiming for and they’ve said it could even possibly be more frequent depending how things go.
  • Will There be Communication Systems like Radios?

Yes. You can currently craft radios and share a frequency to communicate across the ARK (when a server is set to use proximity voice or text chat). They went on to mention that a tower would be an interesting idea because you could ”flood all frequencies over an area (or jammer).”
  • Will There be Eggs to Raise?

Yes, eggs do appear in the game as a rare and difficult to collect item. They will be more common in breeding grounds, of course, but be careful: the dinos of that species will not let you take the eggs without a fight. Unfortunately, their uses right now are limited; they can just be used for advanced recipes. However, the devs said they eventually they do plan to implement other ways to use them.
  • What’s Base Building Like?

It’s basically how you’d expect it to be. You place a floor, then snap walls, doorframes, doors, ceilings, other floors, etc. At the moment, things are a bit grid-like, but they’ll be updating that as they continue development of the game. Additionally, there will be the ability to update things that are already placed with new, better materials. For example, you can start with thatch just to get a basic base built, then reinforce it with wood so it’s harder to break into. And, to add to the realism, there is structural integrity. No minecraft-esque floating castles.

As for where you can build (and, more importantly, where other survivors can’t), there’s a foundation system that determines who owns land. By building the foundation to your base, you control not only everything on that foundation, but a “generous” area around it. This is to prevent anyone from building directly next to you. However, people, and dinos, can still enter your area, so remember to secure it.

Though, they emphasize that it is an early access game, so not everything is fixed. With building specifically, they’re eager to get feedback from the alpha/beta testers to see where weaknesses in their system lie and what parts need to be improved. Keep an eye out for future updates regarding this topic, for it’s likely going to be one of the more important ones.
  • Confirmed List of Dinosaurs & Animals

On the Steam Community forums, a list has been posted containing all the various species that will inhabit the ARKS. The list, as of the publication of this update of the FAQs, contains 48 species, each with how far in development they are. More are sure to be added in the future, so be sure to check back here for updates. You can look at that post here.
  • Fishing

They have already implemented the ability to spear fish, however they are working on adding a fishing rod, which they say should be added by the end of the summer.
  • C4 & Tripwires

C4 is certain to be a versatile tool, as the devs promise it will be able to be placed “anywhere, really, including players and dinosaurs.” They will also be able to be set up to be detonated by tripwire. Additionally, they plan to add poison dart and spike traps after releasing into early access.
  • Saves Between Servers

You will be able to transfer items/characters/dinos between servers, but only by “digitizing” them at an Obelisk.
  • Pet Interaction

Pets will have their own levels and be able to gain new abilities based on their levels. They will be able to be healed with food, and can only die of either starvation or being killed by predators/players. If you no longer want a pet, you can select an option to “release” them, giving up ownership claims and allowing anyone to take ownership of them.
  • Weapon Mechanics?

There will be no bullet drop on guns, though primitive weapons will have travel time so be sure to position your weapon accordingly.
  • Attributes/Skill Limit
You won’t be able to have every skill/attribute maxed out for your character. Instead, you will receive points based on your level which you can then put in a certain skill set. This will make characters unique and benefit playing with other survivors with different skills.
  • Can you pick up enemies with the Pterodactyls?

Yes, it has been called OP by some of the devs, as you can swoop in, pick up an enemy, and then drop them to their deaths.
  • Are some wild dinosaurs naturally stronger than others, or all they all the same?

No, they are not all the same. They will vary within a genetic range, giving them different sizes, colors, strengths, etc. As a result, simply taming a dinosaur may not be enough if you didn’t tame the best one.

The devs also considered implementing a mating system that’d use this genetic variance, so the offspring would get a mix of attributes from the parents, potentially becoming stronger as a result.
  • Can you throw feces?
Yes you can, just equip it in your hotbar.
  • What use is there for dino feces other than fertilizer?
You can use it to suicide while enslaved.
  • Excretions
To add to realism, players will, after consuming enough food, need to defecate. It can either happen naturally, or you can force it by pressing a button. And remember to collect your feces, as they can be used later on in composters to create fertilizer for farming.
  • Can you feed other players to dodos?
There is a hypothetical situation in which you could feed a player to a large group of dodos, yes.
  • Will there be drugs to buff your character/debuff enemies?
Yes – there will be various combinations you can make that will work as medicine, stimulants, narcotics, poisons, or other stuff. You’ll need a recipe to make them, but once you have it, you can make them.

quote:

What to increase statwise
Opinions differ, but never increase water or food. If you want to do stuff in the water, increase oxygen which also increases swim speed.
HP: Increases by 10 per point
Stamina: Swimming time, Running, Attacking. Increases by 10 per point
Oxygen: Time you can stay under water, swimming speed. Increases by 20 per point, hidden increase for swimming speed unknown.
Food: Don't level this.
Water: Don't level this.
Weight: Your weight limit. Increases by 10 per point. Situational. Dinos are useful to carry weight instead, and whatever you're holding weighs them down as well.
Melee Damage: Effects melee damage and harvest speed with tools. Increases by 5 per points
Movement Speed: Increases by 2.5 per point.
Fortitude Makes you lose water/food slower, temperature effects effect you less, decreases damage done by extreme temperature. Increases by 2 per point.

For your first 20 levels, I recommend increasing your stats to,
200hp -First 10
10 Fortitude -Next 5
150 Stamina -Next5

After that, you can choose to increase what you want. I wouldn't go over 120% movement speed(8 level investment). Remember, current level cap is 65 and its harder to level as you gain levels.

OPTIQUESTS GUIDE TO BUFF GOONAGE

JuffoWup posted:

The infamous mumble question mainly experienced by new players joining the tribe on server 40:
"What should I spend my engram points on?"

The answer most would give is just not helpful. It will either be "anything, because we can already make anything anyway" or "don't bother, we can make anything you need anyway and you don't need to know the engram to repair something."

On the other hand, I would say a few things is a good requirement. If others can come up with others, post them up of course.

A) stone hatchet. I don't think this needs much explanation, but it allows you to chop trees for wood and skin animals for hides
B) Campfire. So you can survive in the wilderness alone by cooking your own meat
C) Cloth armor set. Doesn't add much, but you'll need it anyway for the next one
D) Hide armor set. A nice general purpose armor set
E) Slingshot. Pick up stones around you on the beach and then fling it at enemies, go get em. Bonus: it knocks things unconcous allowing you to either tame or just kill them without the corpse bouncing around the island
F) Bow and arrow. I have the arrow making engram on my hotbar so I can craft as I go. Materials are easy to get to replace them. My bread and butter weapon of choice currently
G) Waterskin. You gotta stay hydrated some how. Quickly building a few more skins because you realize a need to head more inland can help.
H) Torch. To see in the dark of course.

The idea of these basic engrams is that it will empower you to survive in the wild alone for a few in game days alone. Either because you got lost (I have had this happen and it is how I survived) or you are off exploring alone. The items won't help other players much either if they do happen to kill you. That is how I also view things. I don't want to be attacking another player, die and realize the other player now probably got an upgrade in equipment thanks to me. Note also that none of these items requires a smithy, fabricator, or mortar/pestle.

orangelex44 posted:

I'd add basic spears to this list, they're really cheap, come up a lot earlier than a bow, and are your best close-combat option if you don't have access to pikes. Having a stack of 3-4 spears makes low-level life much easier. Knowing how to craft the initial thatch building materials is also a nice utility option for if you absolutely have to log off and want to have a chance of being alive when you come back. Narcotics are always needed.

Other, less important things that are still worth learning IMO: crates are always good to know, as are beds. Sparkpowder/gunpowder aren't nearly as effective at powerleveling as they once were, but they still help. Flare guns are cool. Wooden building materials if you like that aspect of the game.

Basically, when it comes to engrams, the ones that aren't worth doing as part of the goon collective are higher-tier weapons (pistol or better), any type of saddle, farming/irrigation, or really anything past level 25 unless a specific situation calls for it. We have blueprints for basically all of that. What a newer guy needs/wants to be able to do is kit himself up in "good enough" fashion from scratch as a naked guy on the beach.

Community Questions Answered:

Question: Could you give a rundown of what is the normal thing to do for the first few hours of the game?

Answer: This is a great question! And to be honest… there’s a lot of potential to what you can do when you first pop in.

First things first, you get in and here’s where you have to make a decision – do you want to stay in this area, potentially inhabited by other survivors or do you want to make for the hills and begin your life on the ARK elsewhere?

If you’ve chosen option one – we advise you take a few moments and look at your surroundings, what is nearby? Who is nearby? Do you see the opportunity to attack anyone? You are equipped only with your hands. These are great tools, not only can you use them to knock out players and potentially steal their gear, but you can also use them as a way of gathering resources. Walking up to trees and punching them will allow you to collect the thatch and wood which is necessary for the first tool you plan to make. If instead you see a person, well you might just be in luck! Consider using the prone or crouch to sneak up on them making minimal noise and SMACK EM, if you have successfully managed to take them out by being sneaky, hopefully you’ll be rewarded with plenty of gear. If you die, well… I mean being sneaky isn’t for everyone and there are other options available to you!

Now back to gathering, after you’ve collect the necessary resources for making a tool. You’ll quickly progress through the early game, you’ll start to gain resources more efficiently and in larger numbers, decide on how you want to stat-up your character and where you want to spend your first engram points. Picking up the first set of engrams is very recommended as you’ll want to at least have the bare necessities before you begin specializing.

Soon you’ll find that you are able to successfully craft better tools, weapons, campfires, and clothing. This begins your journey on the ARK and is the first step of survival. Remember whilst all this is going on you need to ensure that your character is well hydrated and fed. You can do this by picking berries off of bushes, submerging into deep water and or killing Dinosaurs for their meat, as well as collecting their hide to make a waterskin.

Now you’ve done the basics, and you’ll manage this fairly quickly – it’s time to move on and look for a place where you’d like to build. You would want to get a house set up as soon as possible for protection from other survivors, the dinosaurs, and the ARK, which can be very unforgiving for those unprepared.

After you’ve setup your first base, with some storage options and a place to sleep you may want to consider how you plan to specialize. Do you want to be a survivor who wants to hunt and tame beasts, are you someone who prefers building grand villages, do you want to explore and just travel across the ARK? There are plenty of paths you can take on your life and the way you specialize will determine how effective you are in those roles.

Question: Because Dinosaurs fight with each other, if two fight and one loses will we find it death on the ground to harvest things from? Is it possible that the dinosaur can get knocked-out by another dinosaur to make it easily tamable?

Answer: This is something we have focused on very early on. We want our ecosystem to interact with one another. They’ll fight each other, they’ll get involved in battles occurring between different dinosaurs if aggravated and you can surely expect to find some dead carcasses across the ARK. As for taming an already knocked out dinosaur, if it wasn’t knocked out by a person you can be sure to have the ability to tame it for yourself! Some dinosaurs will apply torpidity with their attacks, such as the Pulmonoscorpius, and there may be occasions when they’ve left an unconscious body untouched due to chasing something else or being killed themselves!

Question: Will ARK support mod makers for the PC?

Answer: Yes! Without a doubt! We’re all gamers at Studio Wildcard, we love making games, and we love playing games. We will be providing complete support to mod-makers when Early Access launches. We will release our source code, our editor which uses Unreal Engine 4, as well as all the assets necessary. We’re looking forward to what you guys make!

Question: Will it be possible to ride a Brontosaurus in water? Will Brontosaurus steps break barricades, walls, doors?

Answer: All the land creatures of the ARK are able to swim, however they’re not very effective. They swim slower than they travel on land and you have to keep in mind that there’s a stamina and oxygen stat. If your dinosaur runs out of stamina or oxygen whilst you’re swimming, you risk it travelling incredibly slowly and drowning or suffocating to death. Keep in mind that some land creatures are better than others at swimming, such as the Carbnonemys, and others are amphibious and do not require as much oxygen, such as the Sarcosuchus.

As for whether Brontosaurus will break structures, you can definitely see that happening. They’re a passive creature, but if your house is in the way… well they don’t care, they’ll be sure to step over it. Be careful as if you have any Dinosaurs nearby who have been set to Neutral, or may even be inside the structure, you’ll risk them fighting… and most often a Brontosaurus will probably crush anything that picks a fight with it.

Question: Could you please dive more into the skill tree? Specifically, what attributes will there be to level up?

Answer: This has been asked a lot so I guess it’s time for us to share some details ;). As you level up via playing the game, you gain Stat points and Engram points. You’ll be given one stat point per level and Engram points which scale per level. This is a key part of ARK: Survival Evolved as what you spend these points on determines the role you play.

The stats you have available to you are as follows: Health, Stamina, Oxygen, Food, Water, Weight, Melee Damage, Movement Speed, Fortitude, Crafting Speed and Torpor.

Health

This is the one the core-stats that you see in many games, it determines your life value, if this hits 0 – your character is dead. When you reach below the 25%, your character becomes injured. You will have to regenerate your health using food, blood packs or natural regeneration to regain normal functionality.

Stamina

This is another key trait used in many games, it is generally used to determine how much energy your character has. Eating and drinking certain food will help replenish stamina. As you find yourself playing the game, you’ll see the bar plummet, especially when working tirelessly. So if you’re always chopping trees or sprinting, you’ll need to take time regenerate.

Oxygen

This is an uncommon trait you won’t see in many games. Rivers, Lagoons, Underwater pools and the Ocean plays a huge part in the ARK. It’s often a place of sanctuary or potentially a place of danger. There are times you’ll find yourself diving to the bottom of a pool, riding on aquatic friend, or swimming across to escape a deadly predator… only to find yourself in the mouth of another ;). Increasing oxygen allows you to stay submerged for longer periods of time.

Food

This is a stat you’ll find in pretty much every survival game. Simply put it tells you if your character is hungry, ensure that you’re well fed otherwise you’ll risk starvation. Increasing the amount allows for your character to eat more, therefore you’ll have more time available to you in between meals.

Water

This is a stat you’ll also find in pretty much every survival game. Water is something that will need to be monitored as if you’re thirsty you’ll find yourself suffering from dehydration.

Weight

This is something that’s core to the game. Unlike many other survival games that are primarily slot-based when it comes to inventory, ARK is not. ARK is a weight-based game. This means you can hold as many materials as you like, as long as you have the weight to withstand it. Weight is very useful stat, though something to keep in mind is that the more you carry, the slower you run and the lower you jump. When you reach a certain level of weight, you become encumbered and will find yourself unable to do much.

Melee Damage

is just as the name states. There are always going to be plenty of weapon options in games and normal circumstances dictate that range has an advantage, you deal a lot of damage, you can avoid taking it. It’s the most common way that survivors chose to fight, however we’ve introduced the melee damage stat to give players the opportunity to consider using it as a fighting option.

Movement Speed

This is another key stat to the game, it’s used to determine how quickly a survivor can travel by foot. It is very useful in terms of escaping, hunting, in fact just about everything. It has great synergy with Stamina!

Fortitude

This is a very useful stat that not many may consider. Living life on the ark, experiencing the weather and the eco-system; you’re at risk! Increasing fortitude will help provide some resistance from the elements, as well as provide you some crucial resistance from torpor, which we’ll talk about later on ;). Fortitude is increased by 1 for each point you spend.

Crafting Speed

This is a unique stat and not seen in many games. This will allow survivors the opportunity to craft quicker, at first glance you may think it’s not as useful as the other ones. However you might end up in a pinch where you have seconds to live and you really need to make a bow, those points spent in crafting will definitely make all the difference. The difference between kill or be killed. It’s also a fun trait to consider having on servers where you just want to build as quickly as possible and make many grand structures.

Torpor

Also known as torpidity is a stat which you will not be able to increase. However it is incredibly useful and very important that you watch your levels of torpor. It is used to monitor whether your character becomes unconscious and how long it stays unconscious for. When you have a high amount of torpor, you’ll be knocked out and will have to wait for it to decrease before you can function again though it decreases at a fairly rapid rate. As mentioned before, Fortitude provides resistance to Torpor in the sense that weapons, tools or consumables may not provide as much. Torpor is a key element when knocking out players and dinosaurs, if you find that your torpor is increasing – you better consider gobbling some Stimberries or some Stimulant otherwise find yourself potentially in grave danger.

Now that’s it for the stat points… now for the Tech Tree and Engram points!

As well as gaining stat points for leveling, you’ll also find that you receive Engram points. Engram points are spent on a pseudo-tech tree and it can determine the knowledge your character has. Everything you spend an engram point on, you’ll learn permanently. You’ll have the opportunity to learn a wide variety of engrams, such as the ability to craft tools, weapons, building structures, saddles, signs, crops, pipes, fridges, turrets, flares, parachutes, notes, clothes, armor, and well… you get the point. There are loads of things that you can craft, too much for one person to handle. This is why it’s suggested you find a group or a tribe to play with, or consider looking for some blueprints

More questions answered by developers:

Cannibalism..?

Yes

Can you tell us more about Sleeping/Unconsciousness?

When you log off your character, or if you suffer serious trauma, or eat the wrong thing, your body becomes unconscious. This will allow other Survivors to interact with you. They can steal your items, kill you, and even feed you! But there's something else you can do in ARK... you can drag their ragdoll sleeping body around... move it to wherever you want... even move it into a prison cell and enslave it (or just put it in a very dangerous position for when it awakes)... you can force-feed an unconscious person food & water to keep them alive....

and by enslaving, we mean:

You can physically confine them and keep them alive indefinitely if you maintain their health. You can then do such useful things as extracting blood from them to create transfusion items, or using their poop as fertilizer, etc.

Something to also keep in mind is that when you're logged-out, you don't lose water/food status. However, if you're logged-in, you do. So if someone is logged-in and is trying to starve or dehydrate themselves to death, you can force-feed them food to keep them alive in your prison.

Is there a suicide key?

Right now there is not a suicide key, however there are other means you can use to kill yourself - such as starving to death, eating your poop until you die, jumping off a high-cliff, punching a wall or a tree. Though if you're being held captive, there's a high chance that you'll be drugged continuously, so finding an opportunity to do these things can prove difficult.

We are considering an option of having a suicide key added to each weapon, turning the gun on yourself for instance. However this won't be in Early Access and it's just a thought for now.

Early Access Launch Time?

They can’t say for certain but it’s often 10am Pacific, 1pm Eastern time according to Drake. They will be sure to keep everyone up to date as much as possible.
(Source)

When will we see new footage?

On Monday 12pm PST / 3pm EST the NDA will be lifted and you’ll begin seeing streams of the game.
(Source)

Do buildings decay or last forever?

Currently structure decay will exist in PvE, though in PvP it will be disabled. When enabled if a structure is left alone for a certain duration with no interaction such as your team being near it, then it’ll gradually lose health. In PvP players seem to enjoy destroying abandoned bases or taking them over.

How many people will be needed to cover all of the skills from the tech tree?

It will require 2-3 which could cover the entire tree with overlap, at-least in early access.

Streamers are still playing, so I doubt it's some serious instability problem. Seems more likely that they realized that their servers are going to get slammed (a real shocker, right?) and are trying to figure out how to not have things burst into flames. Seems like they've done zero stress-testing, so I'm assuming it's going to be a disaster.
How is it going to be a disaster if there's going to be hundreds of private servers in a matter of minutes?

Dumping tips while we wait for release, gonna edit this to include more

Stim berries wake up things that are unconscious.
Narcoberries put them to sleep. It apparently makes taming longer too.

The first dino you can tame is basically a pack mule, but it runs quickly. Might be better to knock him out with a small group, unless you want the chase. I notice most people ignore this one.

Dilphosaurus is probably the best thing to go after once you have a few levels on you, makes a great guard pet and can help with hunting. Since you can have multiple dinos, might be wise to tame a few and then hunt larger dinos.

You can jump on the back of a turtle and beat the crap out of it with no problem.

The axe apparently gathers more stone than the pickaxe and the pickaxe gathers more wood than the axe.
If you break an item, Axe, pick, spear, w/e you don't need to open your inventory to craft a new one. If you have the materials you just press shift+the hotkey it's on and you will start crafting a new one.

Don't go inland until you are absolutely ready. There are T-Rexs and Raptors.

Don't go diving too far out or deep with low stamina. You need it to swim back to the surface and it wont regenerate while swimming!

You see those light things they go by 3 colors : white , green , purple

You can go to them and get some pretty good loot !
The white ones can be looted by anyone
The green ones can only be looted by someone level 15 and above
The purple one can be looted by people level 35 and above

If anyone knows how to connect by ip - try 63.251.20.193

gently caress any developer that doesn't have the barebone tools available for EA launch
No configs for dedicated servers (they're empty), no documentation

Strotski
Dec 29, 2013

Will try and sort server in 4-5 hours, if no one else will set up one by that time
Honestly hoping for some sort of documentation, tried everything at this point, it just leaks ram and then crashes

Strotski
Dec 29, 2013

Like I said on mumble - have to bail (for now) on making private server, it consumes 4.5gb of ram empty with no one on
My vps only has 3gb

And if you use 3rd party server solutions it's 30$ for 30 slots/month

If someone can host one for us - please do

THE PENETRATOR posted:

why don't they release patch notes? wtf
But they did:

Patch Notes (Latest v1.602)
v1.602: Blackscreen issue should be fixed! Added more official servers. Fixed a few potential chat crashes.
Working on ShaderModel 4 support and singleplayer performance reloading....

v1.601: Full servers will still appear in server-list now

v1.60: Listing/Refreshing of servers fixed

v1.557:
* Chatbox can no longer be opened in singleplayer games.

* Rebuilt the game content with 2K textures rather than 4K for most. This may help prevent disk and memory thrashing that could have adversely affected performance on some machines.

v1.556:
* Reverted loading screen to static image, might eliminate "black screen of death" when loading into singleplayer mode.

* Made a backend change that may have fixed the backend server issues. We have to update ALL of the servers to fully fix it, but we are gradually rolling that out over this night.

Dev Plan For Today (Wednesday June 3)
- Massive perf jump from fixing singleplayer/multiplayer loading bug

- DirectX 10 Shader Model 4 support (eliminate SM4 cooker error)

- Determine why some people don't get content downloaded -- 32-bit OS?

- Online more servers (including EU and Asia and Oceania as well as more NA servers)

- Feature and Content Patch v1.70 -- goodies goodies goodies (full list incoming)

- Mod Tools and first example mod map (wave-based survival): "Raptor Rapture"

:woop:

Upcoming Patch:

v1.70:
* Fixed a Localization crash
* AZERTY French keyboards can now rebind keys properly
* Initial DirectX10 Shader Model 4 support -- ubersky won't yet render :-P
* Player counts on the server browser are now correct and accurate
* Getting "Winded" in water no longer prevents you from swimming upwards completely -- you now just swim upwards more slowly, and so are less likely to absolutely drown.
* Pause Menu now lists the Server name
* Server browser now has a list of "Survivor's Servers", upon whihc you have a survivor, Favorite Servers, and Friend's Servers
* Fixed an issue where NPC's would not attack often at lower-FPS times on servers
* Broadcast Server messages now force the chat to appear (typically used to notify of server maintance)
* Bonus Item Skins (Stomped Glasses, Cowboy Hat, Noble Saddle) are permanent, locked to your character, and given again after respawn (dropping them simply removes them if you don't want them -- if you want to keep them, apply them to an item).
* Fixed some graphical artifacts with the water, waterline, and underwater particles
* Slingshot torpidity multiplier reduced slightly
* Inventory Key can now be rebound
* Arrow keys now turn rather than strafe, and can be rebound
