Realtalk if you are having fun with your friends you can have fun in 5e as a fighter but your bad rolling is only exacerbating the fighters problems with how poo poo they are. Maybe try a bard? Valorous bards can still fight decently but also bring a lot of spellcasting power to the table.

Or perhaps find a more enjoyable system.

Well, I know ARRPG a lot better than I know D&D 4e (which isn't much, but still) and I'm not sure how the AWED/Striker Defender Leader Controller setup would map to aircraft. I mean, it might work if I were doing mecha, but...

That's not a criticism of you, just me trying to justify why I chose ARRPG.

Take each square to be an airspace, melee combat is engagement or close range Ground to air attacks

AWED are just either limits on ordanance (you only have one salvo of tank buster missiles) or typical Exploit "Cant do that twice"/Pushing the plane too far

Roles fit nicely

Defenders pin down enemy striker craft, they are your escorts
Strikers are heavy attackers, good at killing other air units or fortified ground targets
Leaders are command and control, guiding the battlefield
Controllers use ordnance to either zone enemy fighters or ECM to disable them

Like it's not close to perfect i just feel ace combat deserves that level of fidelity for fighting and my one complaint of fate Is I feel combat is both easily solvable and kinda... meh

'Railroading' is something of a dirty word, but honestly? My greatest successes have been when I've thought ahead toward an endgame. You don't need to plan out entire campaigns at once, and you should always be willing to change your plans based on player action and response, but having an idea of 'the plot' and machinations going on behind the scenes helps keep parties going along. It's generally better to over-plan than to under-plan.

If you want to be more responsive with player input (and that's a fair cop), well, that requires the players having a willingness to provide said input. Sometimes it's just a matter of asking or cooperating, but sometimes it helps to lay things upfront. One thing you could do is provide some prompts, like GMs tend to do in The Game Room - ask them some questions that you can use as story seeds, make sure there are preexisting connections in the world. It's much easier for players to remain invested in something when they have a stake in it, rather than interacting on an external level and poking at the world state.

Yeah this is it like there are multiple ways you can approach it (I entirely work by the seat of my pants and just run with whatever) player input and agency and the narrative, do you have limited plot threads you expand as neaded, a set campaign is 100% ok so long as everyone is on board with it... like railroading is only bad when the players want a game about high court intrigue and the GM goes "NO YOU WILL FIGHT DRAGONS FOREVER".

On August 15, 2007, Wizards of the Coast created a countdown page for a product called 4dventure, suspending all other D&D articles on their site.[citation needed] IVC2 announced on August 16, 2007, that this was the announcement of D&D 4th edition.[citation needed] Unlike 3rd edition, which had the core rulebooks released in monthly installments, the Player's Handbook, Monster Manual, and Dungeon Master's Guide were all released in June 2008.

Well, that seems to make sense. I mean, I'm not sure why'd you release one third of a game at a time over three months, because that just means everyone has to wait ages to actually use their shiny, high-quality Third Edition hardbacks. (Some of which I still have, for reasons which entirely escape me!)

Youd think that but D&D 5th ed spread them out over 4 months IIRC?

For example I don't like lovecraft inspired stuff because 9/10 it's a nihilistic suicide run that will end in failure at best, I don't see the point in playing a game about a story that you cant meaningfully alter.
