Poor Plutonis, suffering in perpetuity at the miserable hands of the great Leviathan known as Traditional Games, chained to the inescapable horror of Something Awful forever, eyes forced open so that he has not a single moment's respite and must stare at this ghastly tableau, without alternatives. Doesn't Plutonis regularly frequent parts of Something Awful that are even worse with regards to casual vitriol and/or bad grammar, though? You'd think he'd be a bit more inoculated to our benign strain of the virus.

Queen Fiona posted:What, you don't like my SHODAN references? I like them. Also, to play devil's advocate, I think someone brought up the hypno-monsters in a different chat thread and noted that it was suggestive of some deeply childish thinking on women from the creators.

# ¿ Jun 3, 2015 06:41 |

Queen Fiona posted:That is, of course, completely true. The whole basis of these monsters was deeply unhealthy views on women, both going back into myth and into the wargaming scene of the time. I was by no means trying to suggest otherwise, just noting that such themes could be found throughout tradgames history. Yeah, I wasn't suggesting you were deliberately ignoring the nasty parts of the whole hypno themes issue. Just saying that they might be why someone is uncomfortable with them in their TTRPG. You're definitely right about the second part, though

I have two that will probably never see the light of day because my work ethic is garbage: *An Atomic Robo RPG Ace Combat/Area 88 thing that would probably end up hopelessly groggy or absurdly offensive if it gets off the ground *A Night's Black Agents campaign centered around preparations for Tokyo's 2020 Summer Olympics and that uses completely unoriginal vampires and would ALSO be absurdly offensive (given, you know, the subject matter)

Stormgale posted:I'd run ace combat in something v combat oriented, I could see it working with a 4e front end. Well, I know ARRPG a lot better than I know D&D 4e (which isn't much, but still) and I'm not sure how the AWED/Striker Defender Leader Controller setup would map to aircraft. I mean, it might work if I were doing mecha, but... That's not a criticism of you, just me trying to justify why I chose ARRPG.

Stormgale posted:Defenders pin down enemy striker craft, they are your escorts The big issue I have with that role breakdown is that you effectively have one player playing Sky Eye (Leader or Controller) and another playing Mobius One (Defender or Striker). Ace Combat is pretty much all about what would be defenders/strikers in your role breakdown; the AEW&C/AGS/ECM/SIGINT type roles are all NPCs. And I feel like FATE combat could be broken out of its stereotypical rut of "build a ton of advantages then smack down" through the appropriate use of stunts or other mechanics on the baddies. For example, a big ship uses its SAMs and any gun-based CIWS both to defeat incoming AShMs and shoot down any aircraft that comes its way. It might have a high attack skill and a stunt that says that it also uses that skill to defend, and gains a bonus to defend provided it hasn't done an attack action this turn. So the only way to get the "stack up advantages and smack down" affair rolling properly is to deliberately expose a friendly to attack. (Further, since modern military formations (a) fight as reasonably large units and (b) almost never fight "to the death", that big ship is going to have plenty of FP to play with, since any escorts it would have not only further pressure the friendlies with additional incoming attacks, but keep the ship supplied with FPs from concessions as they are invariably forced to withdraw from combat.) Again, not criticizing you, just me explaining my thought process.

FWIW, I wish there was a story where some gibbering Lovecraftian horror came into our world and promptly died choking on mustard gas; sort of a "the horrors of the universe meet man's capacity for industrial grade slaughter" theme. Gas being one of the first weapons requiring an advanced scientific and industrial base and all. (Shells and bullets are sort of like that, but examples like Japan's cottage industry setup in WWII show that it's not quite as perfect an example as a weapon which requires a strong theoretical understanding of chemistry and big distillation towers to make.) Then again, I also want to invade Cimmeria and Carcosa and Gor and all those other "sword and sorcery" worlds with picked (bishie) pilots and (bishie) battalions of soldiers under (lesbian) commanders, so maybe I'm not the best person to analyze early 20th century pop fiction.

Right! Let's try to find a topic that won't end in fratricidal clique wars! Uhm...what's a part of world history that you think could be explored more in RPGs? I'd like some more non-Lovecraftian stuff from between WWI and the end of the Cold War but you probably already knew that.
