Never mind Kyle, he is quite the obsessive type. But speaking of changes to the formula, today we finally put up our first game request! Thanks Lizard Wizard for your eponymous request:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_YJks_ApQE

We like to believe that the game itself took on self awareness and registered an account just to help propagate itself via LP requests. Pretty clever of whoever programmed it thus, very forward thinking.

It was a bit frustrating that it worked like that, and I wanna say I think this happens a few more times throughout this "season".

Lizard Wizard finishes out on Friday. Only appropriate that it's September 11th, and we're burning things and saving people falling out of the sky in this game. I guess we couldn't have planned it any. . . I'm not sure what word to use here.

Yeah, I'm guessing that must just have been a common design concept in the early days. Kind of like those console games where you had to do weird stuff like hold reset and a certain button combination to change difficulty, get 2 players, and the like. Just one of those basic frontend things we now take for granted, but that somebody had to actually innovate at one point. Did you ever play a game on one of those weird old computers where to boot the game up you had to type a bunch of alphanumeric code stuff beforehand? Just incredibly basic ways that computers used to work that we don't expect any more.

Yeah, seemed pretty straightforward. Kinda reminds me of Joust, but not exactly. Surprised it's not a more remembered game.

Speaking of the title, I have a game called "A Wizard's Lizard" where you play as a dragon. It's kinda a Binding of Isaac rip-off but not nearly as good. It does have an odd feature where you get two lives and when you die the first time all the ghosts of the regular enemies come after you now being able to hurt you, but it's mostly a pretty blah game with bad controls.

It's Friday. Here's the continuation of LizWiz, wherein we discuss the "Nuremburg Test."
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKY9_DNldj0

Next week, we begin on what is essentially a longplay; we've been back and forth on the specifics of the format and which types of games warrant multiple "episodes." Simple arcade games are probably gonna be edited town into more manageable one-offs while more elaborate games will be reserved for longer, serialized episodes. But then, there are no rules set in stone so we'll be playing it by ear by and large for the foreseeable future.

Alright, doing something a little more familiar to you folks, just not in the way you're used to. It's time for Sonic 2. This time, everything is better than the original Sonic we did a few months back. I'm hoping you guys enjoy it as much as we did making this one.

Also, we're probably going to to do Mon/Wed/Thurs instead, since Friday seems to be a really poor receiving day for let's play videos. I would have figured it'd be the best day. . .

Bad mouthing Sonic? Not mentioning the glorious nation of Turkmenistan (despite me actually being British)? How dare you! Consider this one fan lost!

I kid, of course. Even though I'm a huge Sonic fan and will defend the series and try and see the best in each game, you are right - Sega have done terrible things to their mascot, but I can't fault them for at least trying new things (it gave us some great games in the 90s). Problem is, they never had that loyal Nintendo fanbase that will buy each new iteration regardless of how similar it is to the last. It's like the bit in the Simpsons where they release a new Malibu Stacey which is the same as the old one but with a new hat.

In defence of some of the more recent games, Unleashed's day stages were really good, Colours was solid, and Generations is one of the best Sonic games ever. 2006 however was an abomination (albeit with really good music), and Boom... no, not going there.

I would have got to all the 'stans, by and by. I'll even root them on for the Central Asian Union idea. Go get 'em fellas!

A personal theory I have about the rise and fall of Sonic is that by the mid 90's, Sonic Team was just sick of the franchise. You gotta think, they spent about 5 years doing basically nothing but making Sonic and its sequels, and it's evident by their output on the Saturn and Dreamcast that they had tons of ideas they were chomping at the bit to get done. They had Ristar as one of the last Genesis/Megadrive games, then NiGHTS, Burning Rangers, ChuChu Rocket, and lots of the Team members went off to work on stuff like Space Channel 5.

It almost seems like there might have been a big push and pull between their want to spread their wings creatively and the commercial pressure to keep up the Sonic brand, especially while Sega was still using him as the mascot of their line of systems. That I think also helps explain why Sonic Adventure had such a wild experimental feel to it, with all the fishing and shooting and such. They probably saw it as an opportunity to try out a few small ideas that didn't warrant their own full games.

(Also, on the original Japanese Sonic Team website, you can still see a blog from 1996 chronicling the early stages of development for Sonic Adventure; featuring prominently among the posts there is a series of photos from Sonic Team's trip to Peru and Mexico, where they toured Chichen Itza, Tikal, and Machu Picchu, all of which were the basis for the Mystic Ruins aesthetic of that game. It might be a bit much to suggest they used the orders from above to net a free overseas vacation out of the deal, but it looks like they were sort of rolling with having to make more Sonic as best they could to work in some things they'd rather have been doing at the time.)

As for the slow descent into madness that was the mid aughts, chalk it up to a combination of the last of the original Sonic Team laving the company, as well as Sega veterans struggling to cope with the demands of designing third party software for multiple systems at once, something Sega never really had the resources (or need) to do before. They seemed like they were starting to get the hang of it, too, until Sonic Boom. I guess chalk that one up to plain overambitious marketing gone horribly wrong. Sort of a .hack// situation, only worse.

That said, the idea that Sega wasn't super confident in the fanbase wanting to continue supporting Sonic is an interesting one too, since I doubt they originally imagined Sonic would spawn such a huge series. There probably was some concern that the simple formula would wear thin, so they had to try and add more to it however they could. (See Sonic Crackers/Knuckles Chaotix.)

Red Dead Redemption, Skyrim (yours at least), Far Cry 4 (elephants), Oregon Trail I think you can kill your horses for meat. The list goes on I imagine.

Yup, from The Devil and Max Devlin. One of the last major live action films Disney made before the Eisner era. Elliot Gould is a sinful man that dies and goes to Hell. Cosby plays ostensibly the Devil, actually his right hand man Barney Satin. Most of the time he's not in the devil makeup, but a few times he's seen in it with fire and brimstone and screaming all around him. He makes a deal with Max, to send him back to Earth for 2 months to try to get 3 people to sell their souls to the Devil, with him as a wish granting middleman. He targets two like 19-20 ish types, one a woman that wants to be a pop star, and the other a man that wants to be a dirt bike champion. His third target ends up being a 7 year old boy who asks him to marry his mother. In retrospect, the movie is pretty crazy for Disney, but I liked it as a kid.

Interestingly, I've already added B.Rap Boys to the list and had no idea it was related at all to DJ Boy. I thought it was like "The Asylum" version of video games or something, where they just make a game based off another's success, like "Transmorpher". I have no idea why it would be DJ Boy, but stranger things have likely happened.
