As for crying in the lab? I've never seen it. The women are professional enough to go loving hide and do it or go to a bar and get blasted; just like the guys do. Critical analysis of data is part of the job. Sobbing for sympathy means they are not being professional enough to do the job.

He was an honorary professor. That means he basically wasn't working there any more and was just getting a small salary so the university could keep another "sir" on the rolls and maybe have him teach a grad level course on a pet topic once every five years.

When your job is to be a figure head it's best to not make off the cuff potentially offensive remarks.
