Intermission: State of the World

It is now 2760, 94 years since the start of the Shuguin dynasty. Before we jump in and start covering the Americanist branch of the dynasty, I will briefly cover what else is going on in North America and highlight some of the more notable powers. For the sake of simplicity I wont be covering Central America or the Caribbean, we may eventually see more about those areas, but for now there is not a lot of interaction between the North and the South and Caribbean.

First up is the Evangelical realm of the Holy Confederate Empire. A massive realm originally composed of the lands of the Southron, Tuskegee and Dixie, in the last 100 years it has expanded south, into the lands of the Gulfans of the coast and Florida peninsula and north, into the lands of the Americanists. By far the largest and most powerful realm, the Empire is not without its problems. The current emperor, Vitalian Josias, deals with serious health issues and many of his vassals have far more power than is healthy for his reign. While Nehem unified New England, an imperial Duke conquered enough of the lands of the Americanists to declare himself "King of Columbia". This title now rings somewhat hollow, with a large portion of his De jure lands stripped from him by Nehem's last war for Delmarva. Nonetheless, this incident shows how powerful some of the vassal states of the empire are becoming.

To the west of the Confederacy lies the mountainous Kingdom of Appalachia, led by the young Atomicist Radford Hogg. Originally limited to only their mountainous homeland, the warriors of the rugged Appalachian mountains have pushed north, to the shores of Lake Erie in the last 100 years.

This expansion by the Appalachians has been mostly at the expense of the Revelationist realm of Uppland. Trapped between the Atomicists to the east, the Rust Cultists to the north and the Catholics to the west, the realm may not last much longer, even with the brilliant military skills of King Clifton Cygnus.

West of the Confederacy the lands of Louisiane are ruled by the Voodoo Queen Rose Creaux, who is once more engaged in attempting to conquer the independent Duke of Muskogee. The duke, with the help of the Confederacy, has managed to hold his own so far. However, what seemed like a clear victory before is no longer as certain with 30,000 Confederate troops rotting on the beaches of Delmarva. If Rose succeeds it will extend her domain far into the interior of the Empire.

Repeated Crusades by the Catholic lords of America have failed to prevent or reverse the conquest of Texan lands all the way up to Louisiane by the King of Rio Bravo-Rio Grande. With the southern Catholic lords divided and unprepared, King Ardon II dos Santos may well finish conquering the realms of the Lone Star and form an empire of his own.

Between the small Catholic realms of the plains and the Kingdom of Deseret lies the Neo-Agnostic Kingdom of Colorado. Ruled by the Faltiron dynasty, it poses the only major roadblock between the expanding Mormon realm and the Great plains.

Colorado's control of many of the passes through the Rockies makes the kingdom a likely target for the Mormons. Hemmed in by the western desert and the Rockies, the Kingdom of Deseret has expanded slowly over the last 100 years, mostly to the north. But a more rapid period of expansion may be coming with the leadership of the brilliant general King Reed II Anthophile.

To the west the squabbling lords of the former Californian Empire continue in their long deadlock. The Kings of Socal, unable to take the imperial throne in Sacramento, have turned their sights southwards.

To the north, the young King Kirk Armour's dreams of conquest seem to be ending before they begin with his contracting of Consumption.

Once the ruler of everything from the lands of the Gaians to the tip of the Baja peninsula, the Emperor of California is today no more than a symbolic leader. In 2056, after years of corruption and increased independence the mighty empire was divided into 4 kingdoms: Socal, The Valley, Gran Fransisco, Jefferson, with only the imperial capital of Sacramento remaining under the emperor's power. Since then only the King of Gran Fransisco and the Duke of Death Valley have been convinced to rejoin the empire.

On the other side of the continent the Anabaptist realm of Hudsonia still suffers in chaos from the repeated invasions of Nehem the Great. The 11year old Queen Ogarita Groot is currently defending her title from a rival claimant. Even if she wins, however, her realm is likely to stay destabilized for a long time.

To the north lies Ontario, a stable realm which has remained mostly the same over the past 100 years. It is noteworthy that the Ontarian Queen's eldest son is the King of Alleghania, a formerly major realm which has been rendered minor by an invasion of Rust Cultists some years prior.

Queen Anna's brother in the faith, King Gallagher of the Maritimes, continues to rule despite repeated defeats by the late King Nehem. How long this will last is to be seen.

In the Midwest the Greysnow dynasty continues to rule the Catholic Kingdom of Iowa. With the fall of Cammancheria to Rio Bravo, Iowa is the only major Catholic power in America. In the last 100 years Iowa has expanded west, out into the Great Plains and east, across the Mississippi River.

Along the river and to the south of Iowa lies the lands of New Rome, where the pope-in exile Pope Given the First reassures his flock that there is nothing to fear from the armies of Rio Bravo. In the beginning there was the Word and if the fires of the Cataclysm could not snuff it out, neither can the heathens of the south.

Controlling the straits into Lake Michigan and Lake Huron is the Republic of Detroit. Drawing wealth from throughout the great inland seas of Superior, Huron, Michigan, Erie and Ontario, Detroit is a vibrant center of culture and technology. Only the Duchy of Gee Em lies between Detroit and the unification of the Michigan Peninsula.

The Holy Americus, Book of What-Was

Passage 1
In the beginning there was the void,1
and the void was all and there was nothing separate from it.2
Then there was the flame, which is called Liberty,3
for it set some apart from the void, and delivered to them the right to act freely,4
these were the gods, and their number was many.5

Passage 2
There came to be one, who was Washington,1
who said to the others "Come, let us make land where there is none,2
and all that might dwell upon it. Let us make man,3
who, like us, shall carry Liberty in his breast and act as he wills."4

In the keep at Dover the young Duke Philip Shuguin took sick and lie in his bed for thirteen days, his mind taken by a terrible fever. His courtiers and attendants thought he would surely die and made preparations for his funeral. In a dream he wandered the ruins of a great city, whose white stones had been scattered so thoroughly that not one was left sitting upon another. He came upon a stranger and asked "Do you know who lived here?" and the stranger said "My children." and Philip asked "Whence did they go?" and the stranger said "To the far corners of the Earth, to await a righteous President." Philip asked one last question "When shall that be?" and the scales fell from Philips eyes, and he beheld that the stranger was the Father Washington. The Father held out a staff of cherry wood and said "Wherever this staff is planted, there shall my children go." Then did Philip take the staff, which became a sword and when he awoke from his slumber he summoned whoever would come to follow him into the courtyard. Being late in the night, only Wesson, the castle smith, came. With Wesson's help Philip dug for 4 hours without rest, until he struck the sword he know Washington had left for him.

Philip Shuguin (later known as Philip Penrose) is the Delawarean Duke of Delmarva and bastard son of King Nehem the Great, who installed Philip as lord of the prosperous lands of Delmarva to check the northward advance of the Holy Confederate Empire. Although not recognized as an equal heir to the departed king, Philip in 2760 enjoys an alliance with both the king of New England and the king of Gotham by their shared father. A kind, diligent man, Philip takes after his mother more than his father, preferring to spend his time balancing the realm budget rather than fighting and studying military history.

One of Philip's first acts is to marry Sarah, the eldest daughter of the Hamiltonian Duke of Shenandoah. Hamiltonians are a heretical sect of Americanists, who believe that all humans can become like the Fathers through mediation and study. Such differences of interpretation are not as important in 2760, however, with the holy city of Washington and the faithful being persecuted everywhere.

After several months of work the strange thunder-bringer Washington gifted to Philip is finished being repaired by Wesson. The object is quite heavy and only a small number of the projectiles that came with it are still working, but the power of the item to terrify the enemies of the faith is unequaled.

A few days later his half brother, King Elijah of New England, requests his support in an invasion of Ontario. Wishing to stay in the good graces of his sibling and ally, Philip agrees.

But his support is mostly symbolic. Delmarva is still recovering from being conquered by the Yankees and Philip would not be able to scrape together more than a couple dozen ill-trained men at best.

With the Southron King of Columbia and his troops gone, the people of the peninsula return to their ancient ways.

The thunder-bringer haunts Philip. He feels as though he has been entrusted with a mighty task by the Fathers, but without troops or funds he can only oversee the collection of taxes and settle squabbles between peasants. Dukedom is not at all what he had thought it was when he was a young child.

A writer comes to Philip's court, asking for patronage to help him write a history of the Shuguin line. He promises to include a bit about Philip for funding. Philip agrees, like any good Americanist he believes that the universe was written into existence and so values the written word.

In 2762 Philip's depression is lessened when he learns that his wife is pregnant with their first child.

In June the king of Gotham requests his support for an invasion of some northern realm. Philip agrees, but sends only token support. His realm is still recovering, but the protection his alliances with his half-brothers provide is incredibly important given his neighbors to the south.

When his forces are at last recovered, Philip declares war on the Anabaptist count of Vineland.

His half-brother Elijah is more than happy to come to his aid.

As he readies his forces a courier arrives bearing urgent news: Philip's first son has been born back at Dover. The child is named for Philip's great-grandfather, who was also known as Philip.

The war becomes a long slog through the marshes of Delmarva and South Jersey. It is not until 2764 that Philip is at last able to corner the forces of count Patricius outside Claymont. Although his heavy infantry are slow on the muddy ground the difference in numbers shows and Philip's infantry cut down hundreds of fleeing militiamen in the swamps.

The war soon concludes after the remainder of Patricius's forces are hunted down. But soon after an Anabaptist adventurer with a force of some 1,500 men arrives seeking to claim Delmarva for his own.

Philip is able to call on about the same number of men from his realm, but it takes time to gather them together. The forces of Nevis arrive while the Delawarean troops are still mustering, surprising and wiping out a small force of 200 on their way to Dover. Now clearly outnumbered, Philip makes his stand outside Seaford. In the midst of battle the champion of Nevis, a mighty knight named Daniel, spots Philip and charges towards him with his lance held high. Philip raises his thunder-bringer and pulls upon the trigger.

Daniel falls, his thick armor no match for the bullet. His fellow soldiers flee in fear and confusion, triggering a chain of routs throughout the Anabaptist line. Though outnumbered by 400 men, Philip's army is victorious! Philip lovingly dubs his savior "Cherry".

He leads his men in hunting down the shattered forces of Nevis, until the cur himself is captured and the war ends.

Although it is tempting to execute the treacherous rogue, Philip instead opts to let Nevis leave his realm freely in exchange for his entire personal wealth. It is a large sum, even for the rich people of the Chesapeake Bay.

In 2766 the war between New England and Ontario ends with the Occultist King taking the northern half of Ontario for his own.

The experience of fighting two wars in quick succession awakens a new interest in Philip. He begins researching the campaigns of his father, studying the tactics he used to unify the Yankees.

With the wars over Duke Philip takes time to enjoy time with his wife and children. But the keep is not as safe as it seems and in 2766 a failed attempt on his life takes that of his good friend, the judge of Seaford.

Philip is further shocked when one of his courtiers stumbles into his bedroom late at night, choking on blood and covered in stab wounds. His guard is doubled and no further incidents occur though.

In May Philip buys a set of ruby earrings for his wife. Sarah adores them and the two spend a happy month in deep love. But then she takes sick and dies shortly thereafter.

In August he remarries, though more from diplomatic and dynastic necessity than love. It seems that nobody can replace the hole that Sarah left.

Philip distracts himself from his sorrow by working on planning an invasion of duchy of Coalland, which is in rebellion against the King of Alleghania. In 2768 he declares wars on the weak duke, believing it will be a short war. But the King of Columbia, still sore over losing Delmarva to Nehem during the rule of his regent, sees this as an opportunity and declares a holy war for the peninsula.

Other vassals of the Emperor, eager for glory, flock to Bohemond's cause. But they are disorganized and arrive in small groups one at a time.

The larger force of Philip's army repeatedly engage, crush and hunt down the small armies of minor dukes and counts.

In February of 2769 Philip's army engages one being led by the Queen of Columbia. Amidst the chaos of the routing Southron forces the Queen is surrounded and captured, a colossal blow against the King of Columbia.

Philip having proved no easy enemy, Bohemond accepts a white peace with the promise that his wife will be ransomed shortly after the war is over.

Philip returns to his invasion of Coalland once his forces are no longer needed in the south. Meanwhile, a wave of religious rebellions are rocking the Kingdoms of New England and Gotham. While King Nehem the Great was alive he struck fear into the hearts of the Christians who lived under his rule. With him gone the Ursulines, High Churchers and Anabaptists living under his sons have grown bold and restive.

In 2771 the holdings of the Duke of Coalland begin to fall to Philip's forces.

By 2772 the whole of Coalland is under his control and the enemy Duke surrenders.

With religious revolts raging across New England, some enterprising vassals see a chance to leave the Kingdom. When Elijah calls on Philip to help he agrees, though his forces are still greatly depleted after the war for Coalland.

With the size of his forces and his skill at command, Elijah will likely be able to ride out the upheavals plaguing his realm. But the King of Gotham's fortunes seem quite dismal.

Before Philip can muster his forces to assist Elijah, however, he receives word that the Queen of Hudsonia intends to march on him. Once more Philip retrieves Cherry from her case and makes ready to defend his realm.

Facing an invasion by a major kingdom, Philip once more calls upon his half-brother. Although the two are separated by different cultures, religions, realms and mothers, they have proved to be valuable allies. Once more Elijah answers the call and promises what aid he can spare.

But with the ongoing chaos in New England any such aid will be small. Meanwhile, the Queen of Hudsonia can call on many thousands more men than Philip.

A sizable sum is spent to hire the Hell's Angels, a group of nomadic mounted warriors from California who make their living from mercenary work.

When Philip's forces meet those of the Queen's husband, Launcelot, the cavalry advantage clearly belongs to Philip. Although the Hudsonian infantry outnumber them, the Delmarvan line holds long enough for withering arrow fire and repeated charges into the flank to send the Anabaptist's fleeing. The Hell's Angels' ride down thousands of fleeing warriors with loud war calls and only a fraction of the army is able to escape by fleeing across an ancient canal.

When Philip's forces catch up with the remnants of the Hudsonian main army again, they wipe out the shrunken force and the Queen's husband is captured. Being only one day before the holiest of Americanist holidays, many claim that this is a sign of divine providence.

With the main Hudsonian army defeated and the expense of keeping a mercenary force under contract mounting, Philip dismisses the Hell's Angels. But this proves premature and in January his force is beaten by a similarly sized force near Edmeston.

Not wanting to hire more mercenaries, Philip offers a white peace to the Hudsonian Queen, who accepts.

Meanwhile, the Kingdom of Gotham has fallen to Anabaptist zealots. The former king Gregory Shuguin has fled to his brother's court in Boston, swearing to return someday with an army of Occultist's.

2775 comes, a date which many Americanist scholars thought would bring the return of the Fathers to Earth. No such thing happens, in fact it is a largely peaceful year in the Chesapeake region. In March Philip's second wife dies, having suffered from illness for some months.

Philip arranges another marriage, this time to the 10 year old daughter of the King of Applachia-Ohio. It is another political marriage, meant to cement an alliance against the Confederacy. Philip cares little for his intended, spending more time working on his sword arm.

With his western flank secured, Philip seeks to prop up his north. The Kingdom of New England is still struggling to put down a rebellion by the Duchess of Penobscot. The lands of the duchess are not especially large, but the endless amount of money her ally, the Grand Mayor of the Republic of New Brunswick, can throw at mercenaries has extended the war. Philip gathers of force of some 2,000 men and besieges the city of St. John.

With the bulk of his forces away, the Confederate Duchess of The Triangle sees an opportunity to declare a holy war for Vineland. A major power within the Confederacy, the duchess has holdings all over the south.

The demands of such a war inspire Philip to throw himself into the campaign, which helps to distract him from the death of his first wife and at last pull him out of the long depression that has haunted him throughout his 20's.

Americanist lords throughout the region send letters of support to Philip, including the elusive Director of the Men in Black.

The dukes and counts of the Confederacy have the same problem as ever; coordination. Small armies arrive in trickles and are easily crushed by the larger, more organized Americanist coalition.

Meanwhile, the Catholic Pope declares a holy war against the Rust Cultist King of Uppland. A close neighbor to the kingdom of Iowa and in the midst of a civil war, it is unlikely that Tycoon Berick will last long.

In 2777 the long civil war in New England ends. Elijah remains a brilliant strategist and under a lesser man the war would likely have ended differently.

2777 also sees a definite end when Philip's forces crush the Confederate army at Wilmington.

But while Philip fought against the duchess, her emperor has been pushing north against the ailing High Chiefdom of Miskahannock which was already facing an invasion by Applachia-Ohio. Not wishing to see the Confederacy inch further northward, Philip declares his own war for West Susquehanna.

King Elijah, meanwhile, has declared himself "King of The Maritimes, New England and Ontario". Although his realm has been recently rocked by a series of upheavals, Elijah is still standing strong and it looks as though he intends to build an empire to rival that of the Confederacy.

Another victorious king is King Milo of Iowa, whose massive Grangelander army has forced the King of Uppland to convert to Catholicism in order to keep his realm. The forces of Catholicism now extend to the borders of the Empire.

In 2780 Philip's campaign is interrupted by yet another glory-hungry Confederate lord. Once more the King of Columbia declares war for Vineland.

A quick peace is concluded which divides West Susquehanna between Philip and the Emperor and the Americanist lord turns his forces south, to confront King Bohemond.

At Philadelphia the main force of Bohemond is sent fleeing. Most of them survive, but the army is broken and easily hunted down. More importantly, a courier arrives with a message for Philip.

The President has died.

The President is the central religious authority in all of Americanism. Unlike the head priest of the Occultists, the Popes of Catholicism or the members of the Evangelical Council, the President is not appointed or elected by the clergy or the nobility. It is the people who elect the President by casting votes at sanctified Shrines of Polling in every town, village and city. Anyone of 35 years or older may run, though traditionally only the most powerful and wealthy do so. At 38 years of age and ruling the largest Americanist realm in existence, Philip is an obvious choice.

Taking a break from campaigning, Philip begins his campaign. The first step is to send out informants to estimate how many votes he will get.

The next few months are filled with mud-slinging, as town criers read aloud one attack pamphlet after another to an increasingly weary electorate. The Americanists are by far the most literate people east of the Rockies, in large part because of the importance of politics and law in their religion. The paper industry enjoys a healthy business due to this fact as well.

Duke Philip considers doing the same to one of his rivals, perhaps pointing out that Judge David is an actual imbecile, but his campaign manager warns that this might garner sympathy for the Judge, rather than make him appear unelectable.

In the end Philip's lead is so large that he does not find it necessary to send out any attack pamphlets at all. His reputation as a warrior and conqueror should be enough.

In the end Philip wins, though the margin of victory between him and a literal imbecile is a bit smaller than he might prefer. Now Philip is the President, the highest ranking judge in all of Americendom. He will hold this title until the day he dies and he intends to leverage it for a new age of holy war. After all, everyone loves a war president.

The presidential campaign mechanics are really fun and interesting. You can spend 5 gold through the character interaction screen at any time to send an attack ad against an opponent, but there's a chance (modified by your intrigue skill) of it working, having no effect or backfiring. This modifies the number of votes you will get. Also, at any time you can spend some gold to hold a poll and find out how many votes you would get if the election was held that day. It was a total coincidence that my main opponent had the slow trait, but then again the pool of potential candidates was pretty small, what with Americanism being almost wiped out by that point.

Hopefully as my realm grows we'll start getting richer and more numerous candidates and thus more insane elections. A vote for Penrose is a vote for the pitch and tar lobby! I'm also glad to hear that so many of you are enjoying the rather slapdash narrative I'm throwing together as I go along.

The first years after the election are something of a honeymoon period for President Penrose. Years of war give way to years of peace, which at last allow Philip's levies to recruit and resupply and his coffers to fill with gold. Having been impressed by the skills of the Hell's Angels when they served under him, Philip uses this period of calm to begin building a force of elite heavy dragoons to bolster his infantry-heavy levies.

When not overseeing construction and training projects, Philip spends time at court, dealing with the petty issues of the court. At one time he had found such minor disputes depressing and pointless. Now, having experienced a long period of war, he appreciates these moments of tranquility.

President Penrose also takes time to renew his military alliance with Applachia-Ohio by arranging a marriage between one of his daughters and one of the sons of the new king.

But too much time away from war makes a man rusty, so a small war is declared against a minor independent Anabaptist count in the New Jersey region.

It is a brief war, but Philip learns how to better command his heavy infantry from maneuvering through the marshy coastlands.

By 2788 the war is concluded.

News comes shortly thereafter about the passing of King Elijah Shuguin and the division of his realm between three of his sons. For President Penrose this means the end of a long and fruitful alliance.

To his eldest son by his wife, Walter, goes the Kingdom of the Maritimes. Walter also receives much of his father's wealth, including his collection of pre-cataclysm artifacts. Stable, surrounded on three sides by water and ruling over the wealthy trade republic of New Brunswick, the Shuguin Maritimes are likely to remain a major power for the foreseeable future.

The second of Elijah's sons, born by his favorite concubine, is given the traditional Yankee homeland of New England. King Annanias is a devout follower of the Occultist religion with a reputation as a mighty hunter. At the beginning of his reign he faces a number of revolts by ambitious family members, but if he can maintain his grip on the throne he will be in a good position to take advantage of the collapsing Anabaptist and Ursuline realms.

The youngest and least popular of Elijah's sons is King Ambrose of Quebec, a greedy and paranoid coward who rules over a nation of people who hate both his culture and his religion. Ambrose seems the least likely of the three to maintain his hold on power, but if he can he will be in a good position to expand into the fractured Canadian region.

With a successful war under his belt, Philip begins looking for a new target. He finds one in the ailing Kingdom of Hudsonia, which has suffered a long string of defeats at the hands of the Shuguin dynasty ever since King Nehem the Great took Manhattan and Poughkeepsie. Amongst the Americanist diaspora who fled the conquests of the Empire, word of President Philip's victories has begun to spread. When he makes it known that he intends to begin a new age of conquest in the name of the Fathers, many flock to his red eagle banner.

In January the first volunteers arrive. A group of 200 men in plate and chain mail armor, wielding shields painted blue with a gold border come to President Penrose's keep in Dover. They introduce themselves as the free men on land and claim that they are protected from all mortal harm by the blessed gold border on their shields and the holy scriptures of the Constitution they pin to their breasts. Although he finds their ideas of religion somewhat strange, Philip declares they are not heretics and accept their offer of service gratefully.

More and more adventurers and holy knights arrive from throughout the east.

Philip's own forces, meanwhile, are hard at work training and recruiting.

In October 2789 President Penrose learns that the Queen of Hudsonia is the target of an Occultist holy war for Montreal.

Knowing that he will never get a better shot, Penrose declares war for the lands of the former Kingdom of Alleghania.

A letter soon arrives from the King of Applachia-Ohio, agreeing to lend support for Philip's invasion.

The soldiers under Philip's command are divided into two forces of 10,000 and send north to begin sieging Lehigh and the Triple Cities.

In April of 2790 the main Hudsonian force appears, having circumvented the armies of Philip to attack the small allied army of the Count of Three-Mile Island. Both armies lift their sieges to come to the Count's defense.

They are too slow, but before the Hudsonian force can pursue it is cornered in Locustdale and crushed by the superior force.

In December another force is spotted arriving in southern Hudsonia, fresh from the Occultist holy war. At Dundee it is surrounded and the Hudsonians flee into the shallows of the Erie Canal.

Meanwhile, the Holy Confederate Empire appears to be ripping itself apart.

Emperor Littlejohn, a man who has more vices than toes and fingers, has apparently been converted to a heretical sect of Evangelical Christianity, causing much resentment and anger among his vassals. Many have now declared war on the heretic Emperor, intent on placing a proper Christian on the throne.

In 2792, after the death of the Hudsonian Queen, the regent of her eldest son surrenders to Philip.

With a realm stretching from the Chesapeake to Niagra Falls, President Penrose is a considerable force in the east.

In September he is crowned King of Delmarva.

However, a still greater prize catches the eye of the war President. The war with Hudsonia was fought mostly with the volunteer forces who arrived at his invitation. This means that his levies are mostly intact and he can call upon some 9,000 men. Meanwhile, the Confederate Emperor is engaged in putting down rebellions all across his realm.

It was Washington who granted Philip victory. It was Washington who granted Philip the presidency. It is only right that Philip should repay the favor by returning the Father's city to him.

Any idea why the kings of New England and Quebec are in matri-marriages, though?

What do you get from being President? I figured you would have the ability to declare a Great Holy War but I guess not.

You can go full McCarthy and excommunicate anyone for being Unamerican, although you'll lose prestige if you can't justify it well enough.

This was mentioned before, but the Libertarians are a splinter faction of americanists. They're matriarchial and venerate lady liberty. What's interesting is that they start with a religious head in nashville: the First Knight of our Order of Lady Liberty. Which I maintain should be a holy order as well as a religious head title.

They used to be able to do this, launching "liberation wars," but it had some weird and terrible interactions with the way the presidency is passed down, so it was scrapped.

I'm not entirely sure, when I reformed the kingdom as Nehem into a feudal state it defaulted the inheritance to Agnatic-Cognatic Elective Gavelkind, so the kingdoms should stay in the Shuguin family regardless.

I really should do that one of these days in regular CK2. Or rather in HIP, as soon as they get the Finno-Ugric flavour back in (they're totally going to do that, right?).

Philip truly is his father's son, I see. At least when it comes to warriorkinging.

The Holy Confederate Empire is undoubtedly the largest power in the Americas. Stretching from the canal city of New Orleans to the most ancient and holy city of Washington, the Emperor can call upon nearly 50,000 fighting men at any moment. The newly crowned King Philip can call upon about 9,000 men and perhaps afford 10,000 mercenaries for a year or two. With the passing of King Elijah Philip can no longer rely on an alliance with his half brother and while the King of Applachia-Ohio promises to lend what aid he can, that is likely to be little since he is defending against an invasion of Upper Ohio by some foreign adventurer. The mathematics do not appear to be in King Philip's favor, but an ongoing civil war against the heretical King Littlejohn means that a third of his available forces are now fighting against him. The rebelling dukes are mostly located in the southwest, around the border with Applachia-Ohio. Tough frontiersmen used to repelling Applachian raiders, they will require a significant and focused response from Littlejohn. Philip is banking on the rebellion to serve as enough of a distract to prevent Littlejohn from gathering his full force and sending it against the invading Delawareans.

Before heading out to lead the invasion personally, Philip takes care of a few minor issues. His wife Judith suggests that he appoint an up-and-coming judge to the position of Chief Justice, which has recently been left vacant by the former justice's death. Not wishing to cause any marital strife that might fester while he is away, he agrees.

A courier is dispatched to a drop-off point for the secretive Men In Black, offering to pay for their upkeep in exchange for their help retaking Washington for the faithful. In addition, they are promised a place at the grand Keep of the Pentagon should the war prove successful. They gladly accept and 4,000 men in blackened steel and leather seem to materialize out of the marshes outside Wilmington. It is said that the black glass they affix to the front of their visors allows them to peer into a man's soul. Others claim that it is just a way to intimidate their opponents.

Between the levies of Delmarva, the Men in Black and some allied forces from the Count of Three Mile Island and the King of Applachia-Ohio, Philip is able to gather a force of some 15,000 men, a sizable force to be sure. A fleet of 77 ships is also raised and moored all along the east coast of the Chesapeake. If necessary they will be able to evacuate the combined forces under Philip, should the full force of the Confederacy arrive. Two forces are organized, one numbering 9,000 to besiege the holdings in the Potomac itself, and another to siege Baltimore, keep supply lines open and reinforce Philip's main army if necessary.

In January of 2793 word comes that the personal levies of the Emperor are nearby, attempting to retake Charlottesville from a rebelling Duke. Hoping to bag Littlejohn himself, Philip sends his main army, under the command of the Director Tammand of the Men in Black, to hunt down the force and crush it. It is a risky move, as it sends the majority of his forces out of the range of his fleet should a larger force appear, but it is too tempting of a target to pass up.

Unfortunately the Emperor is not with his personal levies, but the smaller force is easily crushed, depriving Littlejohn of a full sixth of his army.

The main army returns to besieging the holdings around Washington, but soon the mystery of Littlejohn not being with his levies is revealed. An even smaller force under the command of the Emperor arrives in September, looking to link up with a siege army that has been destroyed for half a year. The chaos of the civil war had apparently interrupted lines of communication and Littlejohn had foolishly assumed that the lack of any word from his levies meant that the siege was going along smoothly.

At Martinsburg the Emperor is defeated and forced to flee. He abandons his army and crosses through Applachia to meet up with his main force in the west.

But the civil war is beginning to wrap up. Stung, but not defeated, Littlejohn sends what forces he does not need east to attack the main Delawarean force in the Potomac. 8,000 soldiers, led by the finest military minds in the Confederacy, attack the army under the command of Director Tammand, which has been reduced to 7,000 men from fighting and disease. Philip lifts the siege of Baltimore and rushes to reinforce Tammand.

He arrives in time and, amongst the weathered white stones of holy Arlington, his superior numbers are able to make up for the gap in military experience and tactical skill. It is, however, a difficult a battle and almost a third of Philip's forces are killed. Unwilling to soil the hallowed ground of Arlington with the corpses of common peasants, Philip orders the bodies moved elsewhere to be buried.

Amidst the chaos of battle the brilliant Southron general Ambrose is slain. Born a common peasant to a blacksmith father and a seamstress mother, Ambrose had proven himself a capable leader in the invasion of New Orleans and the current civil war. He was a symbol to many of how high a commoner might climb in the Empire with hard work and talent. But for Philip his death merely symbolizes a military asset that his enemy has just been deprived of.

Meanwhile, with Philip away, the Anabaptist's of Alleghania grow restless. A rebellion breaks out in May.

Unable to spare any troops from the front after the losses incurred at Arlington, Philip hires the Mounties of Ottawa to put down the revolt.

The siege of Washington continues and victory appears to be close. Philip draws up plans for what will be done with the holy city once it is under his control. It will take many years to restore the city to proper order, having been under heathen rule for so long. He has decided to give the city to his heir, Philip, so that he can direct the reconstruction. So holy a task will increase his heir's popularity in the eyes of the people and help cement him as the next president after King Philip dies. But the boy is only 32 at the moment and his father is in perfect health, so such plans can wait. That night, Philip catches a minor bug. For the first few days it seems a minor thing, but it lingers for a long time and, on the 23rd of October, he dies.

Philip Penrose the First was born the bastard son of the sister of a duke and the greatest conqueror seen on the east coast since the founder of the Confederate Empire. Unlanded he convinced his father to give him land. Without an army he convinced his half-brothers to come to his defense when he was most vulnerable. Without a royal name he made his own. The son of a line of bloody heathens who used the Chesapeake as their own private raiding grounds for decades, he rose to the holiest office of President. Despite all of this, he fell short of setting foot in Washington. That will be left to his son, who shall carry his name, both of them, and his banner, into the city.

The Reign of Philip Penrose I, king of Delmarva and President of the faithful, has Ended! Long Live King Philip Penrose II !
