i was talking to a friend of mine recently who was heavy into the cs skins & models scene back in the day and he informed me that Clan of the Dead Goat is still around and there are people actively posting there, despite the scene itself being dead

Look up Double Action Boogaloo. It's basically AHL and TS combined in source.

yo everyone

one of my fav HL single player mods was Half-Life: Chronicles - Episode One and it was sweet as hell and added a kickass M4 rifle that was like a precursor to the HD texture pack M16

it was one of the earliest things to try episodic content and by the production values you could tell a team of actual pros developed this

plz someone tell me you remember this

also CS 1.6 knife-fights were the greatest and I would roleplay I was Bennett from the hit 1985 action movie Commando

one thing for sure is that hit registration in games has been getting worse, not better. goldsrc and those mods were made by people who cared deeply about mechanical accuracy and getting it "right" but it turns out spending a shitload of programming effort getting netcode perfect is a waste of time these days since most people never notice. the last big FPS I played was Titanfall (a source engine game actually) which while a ton of fun has insane hitreg issues because all the servers are 30 tick. 30. that's loving pathetic and the devs wanted it to be a competitive game. cs:go at least has 128 tick servers but at the end of the day the source engine just has lovely loving interp.

but hey looking up FBBW led me to this little project: https://github.com/ichibanMuffin/FBR_Source too bad it hasn't been touched since the initial commit 3 years ago :smith:

idk, i thought TF2s hit reg was pretty drat good and better than TFC. CSGO is decent as well. bad company 2 (not source) also had good hitreg after you spent about 10 hours getting a strong "feel for it" tho I felt BF3's hit reg was way worse. NS1 definitely had a bout a million times better hit reg than NS2 (mostly because flayra is an idiot).

in general yeah, source is pretty bad and really bad at handling more than like 16 people or any movement where people move fast.

i bet if you were to play a goldsrc game, it'd have a lot worse netcode than you remember. i know i tried them about 4 years ago and they've aged pretty badly

probably. i'm not sure what the "magic" was but goldsrc was really predictable. it was really rare when something inexplicable happened, but that's probably just the nostalgia. i should reinstall hl1 and try this out.

ut99 for sure had poo poo netcode though, there's actually an entire mod project just to fix it (actually pretty good and they finally balanced/fixed some of the weapons too)

I think the magic of goldsrc's net code is that you could pick your server instead of being matchmade and there was a high chance of there being a full server with like a 20 ping right near you at any given time

I liked Action Half Life despite only having played with bots. It was pretty much the only game to try and ape the Max Payne feel in a multiplayer setting. Sometimes it worked (akimbo diving) and sometimes it was a double edged sword (slowmo slowing down for everyone)

For Single-player Counter-Life was great. It was essentially counter-strike weapons in the bog-standard half-life game, all weapons drops and ammo drops were money, and HEV/Health stations were buy points. Moving down vortigaunts with dual elites was tons of fun.

Lol I'm remembering the total salt from the opera and ahl communities when the specialists came out, they loooooved to talk poo poo about the specialists even though their games were stiff and janky as gently caress

There was a lot of hilarious cross game drama between those three communities, I miss the days when not only was there room for three different action movie games to flourish but they would all talk poo poo about each other too

I love max Payne and the matrix but man the people whose only reference points for those action mods were those two properties were so loving annoying

Iirc the specialists was originally conceived as a face/off mod which shouldnt be a surprise given the castor troy golden colts. One of the pre-beta maps was essentially the hangar and airfield scene from the beginning of the movie and I remember the last time I watched face/off recognizing a couple of sound effects that the devs jacked for ts
