I think they're trying to paint it in the light that he feels 'inferior' and loving the other woman would make him feel like he was a big shot again. His wife's a full-fledged doctor and breadwinner of the household, and he's lucky to have a job selling Chevys.

Have you ever been in a relationship with the same woman for more than a few months? Or at least long enough to get out of that romantic lovey dovey stage?

I'm betting no, you haven't.

So did Charles actually sleep with her though? He told Ricky he didn't do anything, don't see why he would lie to him about any of it. There's the sex scene but it almost seemed like a fantasy sequence with the whole turning into his wife thing. If anything maybe the fight will lead him to actually go do it.

The sex scene was with his wife and he was fantasizing about the other girl. That's why he told his wife to be quiet; it was ruining his fantasy.

You can say he hasn't done anything too terribly wrong. I don't know a single married man who won't admit to fantasizing about other women from time to time. But the difference is when your wife can put a face (or rear end) to your relatively easily accessible fantasy.

I thought it was that the lawyer had information that the average groupie wouldn't, like privileged knowledge about the deal, and that's what made it click for the Rock.

Or he has a deal with the shady lawyer where when the rock turns up and says $500k, Reggie gets all pissy and says "I can get them for $200k, you're just trying to screw the money Vernon owes you out of the deal"

Or he just an idiot.

I thought at first it was Reggie just scheming and splitting it with the lawyer, but this makes way more sense. It's a power play since he could tell Rock was going to try to freeze him out. I hope Rock saves the day in time :ohdear:

I think Reggie is being set up by Spencer. Reggie doesn't seem overtly malicious, just someone who's in way over his head.

Spencer either got the girl to rope Reggie in on the scheme or flat out lie about Reggie's involvement.

It's also why he brings Joe along to the meeting.

I like that his friend (gently caress forgot beardy's name) is actively telling him not to do it, rather than being the stereo typical dick who leads his friends astray it's a bit more depth to his character even if he is a womaniser in his own right.

I'm with you, or at least I hope that's where it goes. From at least one point of view, he's a brain damaged, pill-addicted near failure desperately trying to project an air of success. Would love to see The Rock go a little darkside on this show.

Also kind of interested in the flashback Spencer keeps having when he wakes up in a cold sweat, now in a couple eps including the opening scene of the season. The QB he sacks doesn't move. Did he kill/cripple the guy or something?

quote:

What “Ballers” lacks in subtlety it more than makes up for in nudity. That’s gotta be worth something, right?

“Machete Charge” brings us on two distinctly contrived plotlines that rely heavily on characters behaving irrationally and out-of-character...

First we have Ricky Jerret — who is still seething at his teammates for taking the wheels off his Ferrari — changing his tune in the time it takes to walk the length of a supercar repair shop. His attempt at “being an adult” and “finding common ground” with Alonzo equates to taking the douchey teammate to a strip club. Not a dinner at a barbeque place or a trip to a high school football game — a midday jaunt at a “titty bar.”
...
Despite the very believable premise of this (arrest) scene — which undoubtedly occurs in reality all the time — the show can’t seem to avoid using the potential arrest as a vessel for goofy visual gags that make exactly no one laugh. It was unwatchable. Case in point: a cavalier Alonzo does not put his pants on before getting out of the car to talk with the police officer. Haha, get it? He’s having sex! Underwears! This kind of baseline humor is the defining characteristic of “Ballers,” which neither takes the time to be funny nor maintain any honesty about the world it’s depicting. It’s not a drama. It’s not a comedy. It’s lifestyle porn that has to shoehorn a problem and its solution into a 30-second sequence.

“Machete Charge” felt like one of the “Naked Gun” movies minus the parts that make you laugh.

This show spends so little time building obstacles for the characters to overcome, they might as well just hold up a sign explaining what happens in the rest of the episode...

Strip club team meetings were part of what got Richie incognito in trouble, so a titty-bar bonding session isn't that contrived.

As for the dude not putting his pants on, a former player got arrested for jackin' it outside a target in a parking lot about a year ago, again it's not that unusual.

I know they're showing a lot of it, but players doing stupid poo poo is pretty much what you see week in and week out in the NFL offseason.

The scum lawyers Machete charge speech was a little dumb but it didn't seem like that big of a stretch. Besides this show has been advertised as light entertainment in the same vein as entourage from day one.

Maybe I'm alone here, but I didn't exactly go into this expecting much more than simple-ish plot lines, athletes doing fun and dumb stuff while cracking jokes at each other, some boobs, good music and player cameos. Which is pretty much what we've seen. It's not emmy worthy writing but for 28 minutes you get some cheap laughs, someone to hate and the Rock being the Rock.

You guys wouldn't believe the poo poo I saw for like 6 months working as a legal clerk in the military. And those are guys with the same education level as NFL players, getting paid like $2/hour by Uncle Sam.

All the dumb poo poo is perfectly feasible.

Willing to bet that's going to come back to bite him at some point. Either the mysterious #81 isn't his actual dad, Ricky never called him to begin with, or the dad did reach out at some point and Ricky rejected him out of spite, or Ricky's mom was lying about his dad because his real dad disappeared for some reason (prison, already married and the mom was a mistress, etc.)

Reggie's getting a bad rap. He's a dick, but he's looking out for the guy he grew up with and has this preconceived notion that the world of sports is racist as hell and his friend is always going to be undervalued and shafted on money deals.

Maybe there's more to it but while Reggie is a huge prick, he's not malicious or vindictive. He doesn't trust all these new guys in their expensive suits to look out for his best friend's career to their fullest. He's arrogant, naive, and completely out of his element but his biggest concern is getting his buddy the fat paycheck Reggie thinks he's worth.

I would tend to agree, if Reggie wasn't blowing through Vernon's money as fast as he can. He's looking out for Vernon's best interests insofar as it's the only way he gets to do cocaine off strippers, drive McLarens and throw money in the air at restaurants. He's a remora, a parasite. He's also as close to a villain as it gets on this softball show, but the opposite characterization, of an rear end in a top hat player burning through his money as the humble hometown friend tries to keep him in check would also be interesting. Basically I wish they would go harder on the economic aspect.

I'm guessing in the next episode that TMZ or whoever tracks down Ricky's dad and forces some kind of confrontation.

He's indirectly malicious. He has no idea what he's doing and is overvaluing of Vernon is very likely going to cost Vernon in the long run. Plus, you can tell by the way Vernon carries himself that Reggie is the one causing all of this financial grief by spending money they don't have. They've shown multiple times that Vernon seems to know what to do, he just won't do it because Reggie's encouraging him to do something else and Vernon doesn't have the heart to shut his buddy down.

It's a complete reversal from the Cam/Reggie relationship on Survivor's Remorse where the athlete wants to live large and the handler is calming him down.

It would be one thing if Reggie just wanted to get him as much money as possible for security. But they've shown ad nauseum that Reggie wants to get him all of that money so they can go spend it.

This is more a fault of the show's writing than anything else, but they don't make a great case for the Rock being a good businessman or a wise alternative to Reggie. It's just a given that all the clients should sign with him because he's wearing a suit and said "don't buy a boat" in the first episode. A slight shift in dialog, and he could come off as some leech trying to milk his connections for clients for little regard as to whether he's actually good for them in the long haul. You know, like a lot of the financial industry.

This show feels like it's written by a team of cynical white frat boys trying to talk about the lives of rich black athletes and using Maxim and ESPN as their own points of reference.
